Did B&M just invent a new type of airtime?! SeaWorld's betting big for 2023, introducing a new, updated version of the generally disliked stand-up coaster. Dubbed a 'Surf' coaster, this features vest restraints with a bounce to them, allowing riders to move with the motions of the ride, creating a very unique ride experience. It's a feeling we've never seen before! But no prototype is without its flaws... we'll discuss the good, the bad, the worries, the hopes, and more in this review!

I don’t know if that would be better because it would just weaken the forces, and because you are sitting you won’t get the full body airtime. Because it’s a standup the reduction of forces is a good thing and you do get the full body airtime. It could be done but it just wouldn’t be as good as a normal one.

I am a tall and large person (6’1”, 250lbs) and although it’s not the most comfortable ride, it’s certainly not a dealbreaker. Honestly, it’s more comfortable than RMCs for larger people. The first time I rode my calves also locked up, but now that I’ve ridden it several times I know how to hop up on the airtime hills and land smoothly. After 4 or 5 rides I have to take a break as my collarbone starts hurting. It’s a learning curved for sure. Overall I love this ride. It’s a great addition. In future models I’d love to see the restraints be a little taller - maybe an extended seat for taller people?

*finally* someone mentioned the possibility of a knee or ankle injury when landing after an airtime moment. I can’t think of any other type attraction that requires you to do a physical motion while riding. I’ve commented about my concern of this happening in multiple Pipeline videos before and after the soft opening and hadn’t received a single response. this is something I’ve been thinking about ever since the trains were revealed, and I wonder if this concern was ever factored in at any point of the design or construction process by B&M. based on the seat mechanism, it looks incredibly easy to tweak your ankle or knee especially for “older” guests or those who have joint or other physical health issues. even myself as a 29 year old who was a 2-sport athlete in high school, there’s times where I will be walking or bending down for something and I will feel a quick pull or pain in my knee. it’s not something that happens often or is much of an issue, but just leaves me to believe how easily something like that could potentially happen while on this coaster 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think the ride needs the vests because if it had a more classic style over the shoulder you would just lift up and slam your shoulder into that. Maybe they can add more padding to the shoulders but it needs to be restrictive because you aren't held in by your thighs like a normal ride.

Great review, so very glad to hear the positive feedback!! I’ve always loved stand ups, the concept was brand new when I was a kid and the year I got into coasters, the 2nd B&M gets installed at my home park of CGA. I had to wait a whole year to be tall enough to ride (well technically 2 years but I started stuffing socks in my shoes after that first season because I just could not wait anymore) and when I finally did ride, it was the like the greatest thing ever to me. Standups will always have a special place in my heart, so it’s blowing my mind that a new generation of standups has emerged and even more so that they’ve become airtime focused! I’ve said for YEARS that standup airtime is THEE best airtime that there is, what little you get on Riddlers Revenge and Green Lantern just lights me up. I absolutely cannot wait to ride this and see some dreams fulfilled!!!!

I’m glad to see that you enjoyed it so much! I got off my first time and consecutive rides absolutely loving it. Such a unique experience, a prototype that’s truly one of a kind. Really hope to see more of these in the future! Wonder how big and fast they can go with it. I agree with everything you said. I HATE the old stand ups and they haven’t made one in what 20+ years? So there had to be a good reason to bring it back, and despite the layout beforehand looking kind of mid, it ended up being incredibly fun and looks beautiful too. Happy to see Pipeline getting love

I'm happy to hear this. I think they just opened the door to more than just stand up coasters. This type of ride seat could work really well in a sitting position. Imagine a hyper or a giga with this hydrologic seats on them. They could even work on adding a second swivel dimension on the X axis of the seat. Imagine getting air time as your seat comes up and your body rotates with the forces.

I rode Pipeline twice today during Passholder previews. It hurt. My pelvis bone hurt every time I came back down on the seat after an airtime moment. The second ride I started pointing my feet down so my feet would touch the floor before slamming back down. It was better, but I still don't like having to be on the defensive when riding a coaster. My collarbones also hurt from the vest restraints. It was pretty much a miss for me.

I'm not sure old-school B&M stand-ups are a good fit. Those layouts focus more on inversions and positive Gs, while the surf coaster experience is defined by airtime.

Totally agree about the collar bone. Expecting the vests will soften after some use. I think the train itself is as smooth as Mako, but the sliding assembly has a gap on the vertical which makes it way worse. You can rock the seat .1-.2 in standing still.

Rode it this past weekend for my Birthday. It was such a great surprise! Loved it! Wish they were filling more than one train at a time which made the line really long. It was odd that they filled one and ran one empty. I loved the airtime especially because I'm only 5'2". It was so unexpected. I thought it was a smooth ride. The vest was very tight on my chest but didn't hurt. Wanted to ride it again but found out it was closing at 5:30 due to their Halloween crap so I could 't with the wait being so long.

The powerful launch and break run would probably not be enjoyable, but the rest of the ride would be great. You could have the seats on the left side facing left, and the seats on the right side facing right. That would improve views and operations, because you could have one ride op do each side of the train with no need to go between rows

Just rode it yesterday and yeah, it's a banger. It had some bizarre forces that you don't expect to feel when you embark on your first ride but it's so much fun. I unfortunately only got to ride it twice before the lines got too crazy then the weather came through so I just left, but both of my rides were in car 6 rows 11 and 12. Based on all the vids and reviews I'd seen prior to going in I knew to expect airtime, but what caught me off guard was the intensity of the positive G's in the back. That's some real pressure you feel hitting some of those valleys and it's awesome. Got no discomfort regarding the gentlemen, and I'm not too tall so I didn't slam into the top at all. I do however have a bit of collarbone soreness today. Nothing crazy but it's noticeable to the touch. Overall though fantastic addition and I can't wait to ride it again. Don't know how it ranks for me quite yet since I'm one of the weirdos that ranks Kraken as my number 2 in the park, but Pipeline is just crazy fun. Definitely go out and give it a ride if you have the means to do so.

I haven't ridden it yet, but I am confused when I watch the videos. When your entire body goes flying into the air, is it the bicycle seat lifting you into the air by your nuts? That's what it looks like, so are we supposed to wear cups? Being lifted by my testicles doesn't sound pleasant. Is it more like a 50/50 mix of the forces and being lifted by your nuts? Or is it all forces and the bicycle seat just happens to rise up too?

This ride makes more sense now that Icebreaker is back to 48 inches. This ride would actually make a ton of sense at my home park at SFNE. Not sure if this is the cost of a small dive that Six Flags would actually pay for or not. Maybe this could go on the Flashback/Goalith plot. Maybe you could do a video on parks that could use this with location in the park.

Man it sure sounds like a game changer. I guess this would be some of the closest you'd feel to like complete zero G, just your whole body flying! But the height issue could be problematic, hopefully future versions will be more accomodating to tall riders, I mean the average height for a male in my country is 6 feet on the dot. And I can only hope they find a way to make the vest less intrusive. I already have enough bad expeirences with the B&M Vests or just vest restraints in general being too tight against my chest, making it difficult to even breathe. So hopefully that can be fixed slightly.

When I rode this it was absolutely awesome. The airtime was on point and I agree with every thing you said. The only thing I want to say is that the vest issue should be fixed soon after they break in from being used. I think the only problem is that the vests are so new which will be fixed over time

It would be cool if they did one of these where you’d be standing sideways, to really imitate standing on a surfboard. like maybe back to back so both sides would sideways. I don’t know how safe or possible that would be, but it’s an interesting idea.

Single file sideways position. That would be interesting

Takes me back to my childhood. I feel like this was ripped straight off the Thrilleville off-the-rails surf standup coaster.

Love this ride, rode it 3 times. Did make a mistake though on my last ride and after putting on the restraint I basically tried to sit down or use it as a leaning post. During the ride it thought I was super short so I couldn’t get up at all and it was pretty uncomfortable. So yeah stand up on the standup coaster y’all

They’re staggered seating, it’s still 4 across in my eyes because of the width of the trains

This looks great! I could see hoverboard being a good theme - maybe a Green Goblin coaster??

Yup, this channel can further popularize amusement parks even more than before. Post-lockdown, the travel hype is there. Wouldn't be surprised if Taylor & Sarah were to get invites by local news shows for commentary. A little butthurt that SeaWorld San Diego didn't get the surf coaster first - you would think.

Im super interested to know if these can be retrofitted to go on the older stand up coasters … I think it could really give Green Lantern,Georgia Scorcher, n Riddlers Revenge a new breath of life along with bettering the ride experience.
