Cobras of India: There are 5 species of Cobras found in India, the state-wise details are as follows,
Andaman Islands - Andaman Cobra
Himachal Pradesh - Caspian Cobra
Kashmir - Caspian Cobra
North India - Caspian Cobra
Indian Subcontinent - Indian Cobra
South India - King Cobra
East India - King Cobra
North East India - King Cobra, Monocled Cobra
00:00 Intro
5 species of cobras are found in India
00:15 Andaman Cobra
Endemic to the Andaman Islands. They come in three colour forms, black, brown and grey. Adult is uniform glossy black above, with indistinct black monocle hood mark. Brown cobra has indistinct black lines round the body and tail and indistinct black monocle hood mark, with brown centre. Grey cobra’s head is black, with pale white patches on shields.
00:59 Caspian Cobra
Also known as the Central Asian cobra, ladle snake or Russian cobra is the world’s most venomous cobra slightly ahead of the Philippines cobra found in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and North India. They have several dark bands under the throat, no hood mark and no lateral throat spots. They are very good climbers and swimmers, generally quick moving and aggressive. Adults are completely light to chocolate brown or yellowish, they can be dark but never fully black.
01:43 Indian Cobra
Also known as the spectacled cobra, Asian cobra, or binocellate cobra is found throughout the Indian Subcontinent. They are easily identified by their impressive hood, which expands when threatened. Two circular eye patterns are connected by a curved line, evoking the image of spectacles.
02:29 King Cobra
The world's longest venomous snake found in South, East and North East of India. Their muzzle is rounded, and tongue is black. The large eyes have a golden iris and round pupils. Skin is olive green with black and white bands on the trunk that converge to the head.
03:15 Monocled Cobra
Also called the monocellate cobra is found in the North East of India. They are easily identified by their O-shaped hood pattern. A black spot is present on the lower surface of the hood on either side, and one or two black cross-bars on the belly.

Actually king cobras are no longer considerd as true cobras. They were removed from the cobra genus(naja) and were put into the genus opiphagus(snake eaters) therefore opiphagus hanna, because of which that makes them more closely related to mambas than to cobras.

@@vinyl6668 no they both belongs to two entirely different families although they look sort of similar; namely Genus Naja or the Cobras (the true cobras including the forest cobras) while the King Cobras, although having the name Cobra annexed to them, has their own different family called Ophiophagus Hannah(meaning a snake Eater that lives in trees) and it is the one and only species belonging to that family. Najas originated in Africa and later radiated into the great Asian continent while original habitat of The king Cobras is India, Southern China, Burma and Thailand

Monocled vs Spectacled Cobra which one is more toxic and lethal according to you?
@NativeAnimals
@NativeAnimals 3 жыл бұрын
Both Monocled and Spectacled Cobras are highly venomous. Please find below few facts of both these species. 1. Indian Cobra (Spectaled Cobra) Distribution - Indian subcontinent Length - 3 to 5 feet Venom - 169 to 250 mg Venom Type - Neurotoxin and Cardiotoxin 2. Monocled Cobra (Spitting Cobra) Distribution - North East India Length - 4 to 5 feet Venom - 263 mg Venom Type - Neurotoxin, Cardiotoxin and Myotoxin (Able to spit venom) However, due to their wide distribution, the Indian cobra is part of the "Big 4" snakes responsible for majority of human deaths by snakebites in Asia.

@@NativeAnimals ,now may I reveal some facts? Average LD 50 value of the venom of the following cobra types of different geographical location:- Monocled/Monocellate Cobras (Naja Kaouthia)- Thailand - 0.20 mg/kg (SC) and 0.12 mg/kg (IV) Eastern India and Bangladesh - 0.24 mg/kg (SC) and 0.115 mg/kg ( IV) North Eastern India, Nepal, Bhutan and South China - 0.30 mg/kg (SC) and 0.20 mg/kg (IV) Malaysia - 1 mg/kg (SC) and 0.89 mg/kg (IV) Vietnam - 1.1 mg/kg (SC) and 0.89 mg/kg (IV). Spectacled/Binocellate Cobras ( Naja Naja) - Bangladesh and Eastern India - 0.80 mg/kg (SC) and 0.40 mg/kg (IV) Pakistan and Western India - 1.2 mg/kg (SC) and 0.7 mg/kg (IV) Shri Lanka and Southern India - 1.7 mg/kg (SC) and 1.1 mg/kg (IV) Northern India,Nepal and Bhutan - 2.4 mg/kg (SC) and 1.7 mg/kg (IV) Central India - 2.58 mg/kg (SC) and 1.9 mg/kg (IV) SC means at Sub Catenous level i.e. from the skin surface IV means Intravenous or through veins and arteries. Apart from Kunitz, the Post synaptic or Alpha neurotoxins ( Both long and short chains) are the most toxic components in a snake venom. The Monocled Cobras of Eastern India and Bangladesh has over 86% of post synaptic or Alpha neurotoxins. Then the Thailand specimens posses 53.2% of such neurotoxins. Whereas the ones in Vietnam, Malaysia, South China, Nepal ,Bhutan and North Eastern India have more cytotoxins,myotoxins and even cardio toxins . Hence the Indian and Thai specimens are way more toxic then the ones in the above mentioned other places . The Spectacled Cobras in the Eastern zone of the Indian subcontinent along with Bangladesh are more nurotoxic than the rest of its sub species . In many places the neurotoxins percentage is between 3 to 6 percent.

@@NativeAnimals Many years ago I had a NAJA KAOUTHIA (Monocled cobra). It's fangs are NOT modified for spitting! My Cobra was very aggressive but I never saw it spitting. But when excited, my male European Hornviper (Vipera ammodytes) sometimes spit venom! But no comparison to real spitting cobras! Nevertheless, Cobras are fascinating snakes.

Spectacled Cobra is found throughout the indian subcontinent, whereas Monocled Cobra is found mainly in the North East India. The Indian/Spectacled cobra has a "spectacle" pattern on their hood, and the monocled cobra has an O-shaped hood pattern. Some of the monocled cobra have the ability to spit venom, so they are also called as Monocled spitting cobra.

@@RamKumar-md6se sir actually you might have mistook the snake for cobra as some snakes or most of the snakes can flatten their neck to display a slight hood like structure. Since I am also from Odisha most people often confuse oriental ratsnake with cobra as they both look identical unless looked closely. Ratsnakes are good climbers and can also be seen hunting for birds or eggs on trees where as cobras mostly resort to hunting on ground.

Very dangerous but really "cool snakes". 1= Naja sagittifera; 2= Naja oxiana 3=Naja naja 4= Ophiophagus hannah: according "The Reptile Database" DNA barcodes suggested multiple species within this species (Laopichienpong et al. 2016)! The King cobra forms 4 main lineages that may constitute Candidate Species in the (1) Western Ghats; (2) Indo-China (3) Indonesia-Malaysia; (4) Luzon (Philippines) (Shankar et al. 2021: Fig. 7, Amat & Escoriza 2022). 5= Naja kaouthia. ALL "Real Asian Cobras" (Naja) were formerly subspecies of NAJA NAJA!!! In the 80's I worked in a reptile exhibition during the school holidays. The most impressive snake was a 450cm King Cobra! My own biggest venomous snake was a huge Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus), about 7 feet long.
