I remember seeing this in the theater with my friends back in '95. None of us had ever seen this kind of animation before. Had anyone up to that point? We were all like, "Woooooooow!" Now it's common, but back then... not so much.

Same! I had seen early CGI in the "Mind's Eye" VHS tapes (look them up here, pretty cool), but this took it to a whole new level, didn't it? Pixar was able to get camera angles that would be impossible in the physical space, amazing at the time.

Disney bought Pixar Studios in 2006 (I think). Pixar was an independent studio for 10+ years and did a great job of creating iconic hit movies using computer animation that just didn’t exist at the time. The first Pixar anything that I saw was a short in theaters featuring a desktop lamp and a ball. I have no idea which feature I saw that night. All we could talk about was the Pixar short. The lamp is now the “mascot” seen in the opening credits of every Pixar film. Toy Story was the movie event of the year. They still make great movies with incredible stories. But the jaw dropping animation was a revelation 30 years ago…

Apple bought Pixar from Lucasfilm. John Lassiter was working for Lucas because he had been fired from Disney. It seems Lassiter had gotten a sneak peak at Tron and tried to convince Disney that computers would be the way stories were told in the future. Disney was not amused.

The fact that some people haven't seen Toy Story, the FIRST full length computer animated theatrical release, is honestly shocking. Also, toys from the Buzz Lightyear line are the only toys who don't know they're toys when they're opened. It's probably a result of the themed box on the Buzz figures.

*(Sorry for the long-A$$ comment, but I promise, it's worth it. OH YEA! And I feel it's my duty to give you the end-credits report for the franchise, sooooo: TS2: End Credits "Outtakes" (YES, BLOOPERS!). TS3: Long End Credits Scene. TS4: 3 Mids & 1 Post.)* 😁 *Buzz, Tim Allen, also starred in a sitcom, at the time, called "Home Improvement" (1991-1997) on the ABC network, here the US (For anyone watching this outside the US). His character, "Tim", hosted a TV show called "Tool Time", where he and his partner, "Al", demonstrated how to fix things in your home and also make improvements. And the show's main sponsor was "Binford Tools", which is the name you see on the tool box, in Sid's room. Disney bought ABC in 1995, so they were able to that Easter egg in the movie. Also, remember the name of the gas station, "Dinoco", for when you react to "Cars".* *Let's give Coby all the basic Pixar movie Easter Eggs to look for, moving fwd from "Cars". The ones I can think of are:* *-The blue & yellow ball with the red star* *-The number "A-113"/"A113" - Easter egg in media developed by alumni of California Institute of the Arts, referring to the classroom used by graphic design and character animation students.* *-The "Pizza Planet" delivery pickup truck.* *-John Ratzenberger - The voice of "Hamm", the piggy bank. Pixar considers him good luck, so he voices in all Pixar movies. He was also Cliff Clavin, the know-it-all Mailman in the sitcom, "Cheers" (1982-1993), and was in The Empire Strikes Back as Major Bren Derlin* *-Then there are the movie overlaps, and cameos. Too many too list. lol*

In the original storyboards for when the mutant toys scare Sid, those soilders were meant to come up out of the ground (hence Woody's line "Great guys! COming out of the dirt like that was a great idea!") but back then it was too hard or outright impossible to make things come out of the earth in a believable/realstic way so they came up from the muddy water instead. Also, originally Woody was gonna come to life much earlier in front of Sid but John Lasseter and co thought it'd be better with Woody use his voice box to creep up and scare Sid and save coming to life in front of him for last (which is a better choice, maxing the "creepyness"). Also Hannah was just look deadpanned at Sid's behavior at the end like she thought "Oh brother!" but it's better with her getting back at her big brother for all the times he was being mean to her.

Fun Fact: Toy Story used a different opening originally 1995-2005 with its own Walt Disney Pictures Opening completely redone in CGI with its own musical score by Randy Newman. It was shown in: 1995 Theaters all the way to the 2005 10th Anniversary DVD release. Though I’m 2010 the 1995 Walt Disney Pictures opening was replaced by the 2006 standard and 2008 Pixar Opening.

The thing about Pixar though, unlike Disney and Dreamworks, was that while the others wrote "one for us, one for them" jokes, Pixar wrote better - jokes that worked on both levels at the *same* time. When a little kid hears Buzz breathing inside his helmet they get it and it's funny But for older kids and adults it works that way *and* because the scuba regulator sound is Darth Vader's breathing. Same with the action/Buzz in danger with the tacks and the globe of the world. To kids it works because the household stuff is overscaled danger while being regular real world stuff, but not to a toy. To us it's the Raiders of the Lost Ark poison darts and deadly boulder as well! Such great stuff.***

The first three movies in the franchise are all great. If anything, the installments got better as they went along. I never wanted to see the 4th movie because it looked like it was about to open up a can of existential philosophy about creating life. But I really did enjoy the first three a lot. Buzz being unaware that he's a toy does raise questions. He apparently knew not to move when people were around, or in his box at the toy store. The Pizza Planet delivery truck (AKA the 'Yo Truck') has since appeared in every Pixar animated film, including 'Monsters Inc' and 'Ratatouille.'

I remember when I went with my family to see the original Toy Story in theaters in 1995. Of course, back then I had no idea that what I was watching was considered groundbreaking and a milestone in the history of animated film. I was just focused on the story. The concept of toys coming alive when their owners weren't present was certainly new to a five-year-old, and very intriguing. Add in the twist of a cool new toy coming to life and believing that he wasn't really a toy but an actual space ranger, and well, I was hooked. I found Buzz Lightyear's character to be cool, but very frustrating. I constantly wanted to shout "You're a toy!" at the screen and my parents had to keep shushing me. I was very much on Woody's side of things. It wasn't until we arrived at the scene where Buzz sees the toy commercial of himself that I started to feel differently about him. I suddenly understood then that realization of the truth would devastate him and I really didn't want that to happen. So, when he climbed up to the top of the stair railing and tried to fly out the window, I really rooted for him to make it. "To infinity and beyond!" suddenly turned from being a cool catchphrase into an emotional character line filled with hope and defiance in the face of a hard reality. In that moment of slow motion in the air, I really thought that maybe, just maybe, it could really happen. That he could actually fly and was going to make it. Then of course, he started to fall, and the truth hit him as hard as the wooden stairs he bounced off of. And the image that moved me the most and has stuck with me ever since was that of Buzz on his back with his left arm knocked out of its socket. He felt no physical pain, but that climatic moment of existential comprehension that crossed his face, and the mental anguish he felt right after made me almost cry for him. It's funny, even though he doesn't say anything, the look on his face registered so powerfully that I literally have a memory of him admitting out loud, "I am a toy." I'm fairly certain that was the first time I had ever felt such a reversal of emotions for a character. I was rooting for both him and Woody to make it back to Andy for the rest of the film instead of just Woody. The message for the adults (I believe) is that when you grow older, there comes a point where you realize you aren't actually that special compared to everyone else. Everything you do works as part of a cog in society. But there's still hope, because you can find happiness where you are, and with those around you. Buzz found out that being a toy isn't so bad, just as being a person isn't so bad either. He got to fly in the end after all.

Took my oldest son to watch this at the old El Capitan theatre in Hollyweird and he was amazed by the service and feel of the old theatre and building which made his Toy Story movie experience memorable. And after watching this iconic movie you get to visit the Hollyweird Soda Fountain shop attached to the theatre to buy Toy Story merchandise and buy a banana split to sit down and enjoy.

I can't believe you haven't ever seen this!? Yeah, it probably came out before you were born, but it is such a kid's classic. I built a buzz costume out of foam and hot glue about 10 years ago, and now I wear it every year. At the NYC halloween parade, I can't get 10 feet down the street without people posing for pictures, or screaming "to infinity and beyond!"

I highly recommend reacting to the Saban's Power Rangers Movie from 2017. staring Dacre Montgomery who played Billy in stranger things, Naomi Scott who played Jasmine in the live-action Aladdin movie, Bryan Cranston who played Walter White in Breaking Bad, and Elisabeth Banks who played Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games.

yes, you need to do at least the toy story movies :) Although many of the other PIXAR movies are well worth it - they are great stories that happen to be kid friendly and animated...

Toy Story was the very first feature length film made with 3D computer animation. It is to 3D computer animation what Disney's Snow White was to traditional animation.

My brain listening to Randy Newman reminded me he wrote “You can leave your hat on”, which in turn reminded me of the film “The Full Monty”…which Coby should review

I don’t know that I’d go that far, but it was definitely unique for its time. It was the first computer animated movie. I remember it was just as big as Lion King when it came out the previous year
