Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a 2014 American science fiction action film directed by Matt Reeves and written by Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), it is the second installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise and the eighth film overall. It stars Andy Serkis as Caesar, alongside Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, human survivors battle to stay alive in the wake of a deadly pandemic, while Caesar tries to maintain control over his expanding ape community which could lead to an all-out war between apes and humans.

Caesar is just the best, love him sooo much. Caesar's eldest son is called "Blue Eyes" since he has lovely blue eyes instead of green, plus Caesar clearly named him after his mother "Bright Eyes". The youngest son is named Cornelius after his mother Cornelia.

No one else seems to notice this small detail. When Koba confronts Ceasar about him loving humans more than his family, Koba uses his pointer finger and touches him as if to further call him out. This is clever because in the first film the angry neighbor did the exact same to Wills father when he was yelling at him and Ceasar went apeshit in both scenarios

Such a brilliant film - so many complex characters and you get why all the people do what they do. Koba is a complex antagonist, but you get exactly why he won't let the rage go, the desperation of the humans to get the dam working... Just a combustible situation with a lot of highly emotional people!

Its always sad thinking about how Koba and Ceaser's relationship broke down during the course of the film, at the start Koba was of among his most trusted lieutenants and an encouraging uncle figure to Blue Eyes, and would jump a Bear to save Ceaser.

All the things I love about this movie would fill an entire book. Andy Serkis is still amazing. I felt sad for Koba and what his hatred made him do. One thing I have to say about the character of Carver has to do with the actor who played him, Kirk Acevedo. After seeing him play Joe Toye in Band of Brothers, it was different seeing him play a character who was not very likable. But, then again, that is the mark of a good actor. Cannot wait to see your reaction to War.

You've commented about the cgi apes. I still highly recommend watching Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes". The apes are done with prosthetics on the actors, and even Charlton Heston appears as an old chimpanzee. Makeup artist, Rick Baker, said in an interview that he had asked Tim Burton to be sure to get actors with small noses for the apes (using his own nose as an example of the wrong nose), then had to turn Tim Roth into a chimpanzee.

Yeah, I look at the original 5 as it's own thing, this is a re-imagining of the "Planet of the Apes" - but if you think about it, it all could be a lineage between these films and just the original film, as you said, they have their own... reasons for the apes.

Hi Coby, I'm a little behind.😊 I need to watch Rise after this one. This is the first apes film series to outdo the five films beginning in 1968. They are doing a very good job retelling the original film stories. Plus, motion capture is finally advanced enough to depict the apes as believable real characters. Great reactions to your second film in this most recent apes series, Coby!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

It’s supposed to be a 400 year in the future setting. It was so many dominos that fell. They had a 3 day deadline that we can only assume malcom only knew and didnt tell anybody. (Also we never see/no mention of anyone returning and coming back saying hey we're good.) So the humans would've attacked the apes regardless but they got the power working if they didnt the 3rd day would've hit. Rockets son getting shot. Koba following, finding them testing the weapons was alright but he investigated further and found they had an arsenal. Koba saying hey you freed me id do anything you'd ask but we need to show strength, and they did but then caesar slowly but definitely giving the humans more and more free reign. When to koba it was caesar choosing humans over the apes. Even maurice getting inbetween koba and the kid and then caesar beating up koba cemented in his mind that he needed to do what he had to.

In a very strange way this film is like the Pixar film 'Up'. A very short 'timelapse montage' right at the beginning (Carl and Ellie's marriage in 'Up' the spread of the Simian Flu here) that is *so* good and emotionally impacting that it overshadows the rest of the movie even though the rest of the movie is perfectly good.

I've thought about the possibility of peace after this movie, the more I think about it, the more I realize that indeed, it is not an option. The amount of human casualties, the former human settlement leader being dead, Malcolm and the few others that are sided with the apes would be seen as traitors. Humanity would not distinguish between Koba and Caesar. Even if a peace was established, it would again only take 1 human or ape to reignite the conflict. Another Carver or Koba, and it's back on. Also, bigger picture, the fear of extinction. What happened to the neaderthals? There was a species of similar intelligence (Homo Sapien) and luck of the genetic draw eventually eliminated Neanderthals. So, humans may feel their place on the planet is threatened by the intellectual rise of another species. Why not TRY to wipe them out, ya'know? Try or go extinct.

Koba would have been alright and lived a normal life if the humans hadn't come there. However, they did anyway and that once again ignited the hatred for humans that he had buried inside him. Hate can be a powerful driving force but it can also blind you.
