Hello guys! I never knew that this post blew up. Unfortunately, GusGus succumbed to an unknown illness before I even got to take him to the vet. I was gutted. It all happened so fast. I noticed when I woke up that he didn't look well but I had to ran some errands so I told myself I'll take him to the vet later but when I came back he's gone. I made tons of videos with him. I loved him so much he was so good at what he does and he never attempted to fly away. He was content with the daily exercise he was getting. It's been almost a year now and I am still not over it but hopefully I'll get a new bird soon. Thank you for all the support!

Something to remember if you do get another one, birds are the indisputable masters of hiding illness. They are prey animals, and showing weakness is a death sentence, so they hide it. By the time they're outwardly showing symptoms, it's an emergency, they are *very* sick and maybe even heading out already.

Hmm some interesting question/comment in an free flight video Okay ones the bird is experienced in ff or had ff for few days, weeks it won't fly away until unless it's scared of something and not coming back which is rare because free flyers are very discipline With their out door and indoor routine and the birds too are discipline Now so the free flyer is not whistling from his mouth continues he has an whistle which makes the sound go far if the bird is far so the bird can hear the whistle and come back and we can keep whistle with that whistle for 5 min and more if needed that too continues 😅 and I swear the jaw hurts so much and mouth is all dry But that point of time we don't care it's usual for us and the bird is important for us at that point of time

How did you teach him/her that? I want to get an cockatiel and want to tech him how to not fly away
@owlsrawesome3 жыл бұрын
There are clicker training videos on how to teach your bird a recall. The only reason your bird would fly away from you is if you got one as a chick (they have instincts to leave their parents) or if they’re afraid of something, like a predator. The latter is very hard to control outside with raptors flying overhead, so it would be better to free fly in buildings instead of outdoors. Also, remember to adopt a cockatiel, don’t buy one when there are many who need a good home.
@isabellamerrigan80743 жыл бұрын
It takes months of training. To begin with you have to do recall indoors. Call the bird to you and it lands on your finger then you give it a millet treat. Then you have to get it comfortable with a harness. Use the harness to do recall indoors even more. Finally after the bird can do recall reliably take it outside on the harness to do recall until every time you call it it will come. Then you can start to do plain free flight outside without a harness.

I'm sure that you were nervous while you were whistling to call him back and let him know where you were at and he just couldn't seem to find you right away... Was sooo glad to see that he did though!😁👍I have a house sparrow that I'd rescued and he free flights and comes insides my house whenever he wants to and sleeps in bed with me halfway through the night and snuggles in the mornings. It's so satisfying to have this kind of a bond with a bird, of any species! I remember teaching him to come back to me too with a whistle and/or calling his name and I did it in a public place with people around and he'd ended up latching on to the back of some guys shirt and I had to chase the guys down and tell him that he had my bird latched onto his back lololol. I don't know HOW the guys didn't feel my bird latch on let alone that he didn't seem like it was an odd thing at all to have had experienced for him either🤣 It makes me SO happy to see people NOT keeping their pet birds INSIDE of a house or in a cage all day long. Birds need to experience what they were naturally meant to experience AS A BIRD WITH WINGS, and they'll show the upmost LOVE, appreciation and loyalty to you in return. God's creatures are amazing!🤟🥰 EDIT: I just saw your comment that GusGus had passed away unexpectedly and I am SO sorry to hear that!!! I am still SO happy though that he at leaat had you in his life, you're an incredible owner and were a great friend to GusGus. I hioe that your heart heals enough that you feel comfortable getting another bird someday, your heart is too good to not share it with the animal kingdom!!!!!💞
