To those who are asking where this is happening. It's in the inner northern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. Sulphur crested cockatoos are highly social and very intelligent. Even wild ones like these easily learn to take food from somebody's hand and with patience they will learn to like a scratch under their wings. City birds like these might have several homes they visit at different times of day.

We rented a house where the previous occupants must have fed them. Every day at about 3pm they would come knocking on the window for food. It didn't take us long to cave and feed them. In some parts of Australia you get longer in prison for feeding them than murder.

Chantilly Lace ... I have looked into it a bit further and in some places they are a menace to agriculture and can become quite viscous in their attempts to get food off people. They destroy park areas by ripping up grass roots and can cause at much mess as pigeons. But they can be quite tame and cute as well.

Everyone here's saying how cute they are, I'm sitting here glaring at my own flock of wild cockies who are eyeing off my fruit trees and pot plants I have so many regulars in my garden - the crested pigeons are very sweet, my old lady bush turkey is a badass who chases off the neighbourhood cats, I get flocks of female bowerbirds and the occasional shiny blue male, territorial honeyeaters and minor birds, a new pair of magpies who have taken the territory over, a kookaburra, wood doves, and that's only the ones that actually stop by, so many more fly over (yellow tail black cockatoos that sound like old squeaky doors, lorikeets, king parrots, eastern and crimson rosellas etc). The only ones, ONLY ones, I have ever had to chase off are the bloody. Sulfur crested. Jackass. Cockatoos. ... They're too smart for their own good, I tell you. And entirely, consumingly, all too bored. ... But I'm glad you have a good relationship with your local flock XD To me they're like mob bosses. You either pay taxes (seed) or perish.

I'm absolutely jealous, mate. I wish I can visit Australia some day, not in small part because I want to see your wild birds. I was in NZ last year and had a most amazing few days hanging out with a flock of wild kea, which seem decidedly similar to cockatoos in their behaviour and intelligence.

@Craig Wortham Not true. Birds brains may be small but have a much higher density of neurons than any mammal, even humans. This makes them incredibly smart. Dolphins does not really have to be that smart, they might just do things that makes us believe they are smarter than other animals, just like dogs (dogs are pretty dumb but we believe they are smarter than for example crows anyways even tho that mostly is not the case) If you want to see real intelligent animals you will have to look at squids, octopuses and cuttlefish, they are incredibly smart in ways we use to define as intelligence (solving mazes and problems with math for example)

You know that too much can possibly kill them right? Small pellets and seeds aren’t good for a birds diet and I don’t think they eat it in the wild either. They’re better off having the occasional nut. ☺️

@@ema2859 I said a handful, not an overdose, Cockies main diet in the wild is seed based, their beaks & tongues are adapted over milennia to strip & eat seeds (just as a hummingbirds beaks are to flute shaped flowers) yes, nuts & bulbs are another food item but seeds are the main source, though feeding the unstriped varieties of seed retain fatty deposits in the liver so obviously people need to know what they're doing, but as i said, cockies eat these as their main food source, you might be thinking of other bird species that consume nectars.

This is true but the birds that are pets have been under human care for atleast 2 generations. They are used to beimg fed by humans. If these pet birds are released they wont last a week because they dont know how to look for food

Not getting involved in a back and forth, but will briefly indulge. I understand your point a tiny bit, however, Cockatoos, birds, are wild animals. They are a completely different species. Therefore, logically speaking, there is not a day in-day out comparison to humans living in houses. We are a completely different species. The life of many- thousands and thousands- of Cockatoos has become a neglectful nightmare of captivity - Fact. Other birds as well. Humans must come to grips with the realization that they never had a 'right' , if I could put it that way. to do this to them. Many other wild animals too. At this point I'm ending my communication in terms of the back and forth, but just know I'm being sincere. The internet was once- many moons ago- a 'place' of hope for sharing info. So in that vein, I am responding. Take care, and adopt, don't shop! Dig it! : )

Suburbia is pretty much a perfect habitat for these little fellas. The only real problem would be cars and electric cables.

Omg I wish we had cool birds like that here in Canada. I envy you being able to hang out with them and feed them. So very cool.
