In this week’s episode of “Cocktails with a Curator,” take a closer look at the extraordinary flickers of paint in the colorful canvases of François Boucher’s Four Seasons series with Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator Xavier F. Salomon. Acquired by Henry Clay Frick late in life, the four paintings were commissioned by Boucher’s great patron Madame de Pompadour-the longtime mistress of King Louis XV-to be placed over doors, hence their unusual shape. The complementary cocktail this week is the Time Regained.

Those grapes - I have to look at them again, they are as luscious as the upstate varieties at New York City's greenmarkets in autumn. The elegant woman in the sleigh reminds me of a snappy Spanish idiom, "Our elegance will keep us warm!" Lastly, I hail Xavier's cocktail made with Pisco, the main ingredient of many a Pisco Sour over the years. What a joy to ponder the passage of time in this way - though the Frick itself is timeless.

I've always wondered why renaissance dolphins look so unlike what I think a dolphin would look like in life. Is there a reasons the dolphin sculptures form these paintings look like this?
