In the second-to-last episode of “Cocktails with a Curator,” join Assistant Curator of Sculpture Giulio Dalvit for a discussion of Andrea del Verrocchio’s “Bust of a Woman,” one of three marble sculptures welcoming visitors on the third floor of Frick Madison. This bust of an unknown sitter showcases Verrocchio’s command of the medium, from the sitter’s look of surprise and the subtle movement of her sleeves to the intricately carved clasp of her garment and the tight curls in her hair. This week’s complementary cocktail is Alchermes, a quintessentially Florentine liqueur that will appeal to viewers with a sweet tooth.

Thank you Giulio I have so enjoyed getting to know you and learn from you. A new perspective and I knew nothing about marble so this has been amazing. I will miss you and your stories and I do love how you have given us so much about women in art. You have certainly sent me to Amazon for books, to the bookstore at the Frick and even the library to learn more.

I wil so miss my Friday cocktail but more so all that I have learned with Amy, Guilio and Xavier- if anything good came out of this pandemic is that I have made a discovery of the depth of the Frick collection that will never be forgotten

Another interesting look at what Renaissance female portrait bust convey both in their time and in our own. The enduring quest to capture the fleeting notion of beauty in a permanent medium seem to be one of those perennial artistic quests. The examination of how scholarship evolves over time and some of the pitfalls of trying to give the sitter a verifiable identity is rather amusing especially the problematic link of the motifs on the voided velvet on the sleeve of the costume and the testicular rebus on the Colleoni coat of arms.
