Using plant-based milks with milk kefir grains? The tried and true version of this is using coconut-milk between batches of lactose-milk. Milk kefir grains feed on lactose (milk sugar) and need to be fed lactose in order to grow and multiply and stay healthy. Milk kefir contains many digestive enzymes such as lipase (digest fat), protease (digest proteins) and lactase (digest lactose). To get around using animal milks completely, one can buy lactose powder or drops and add this to plant-based milks. Otherwise rotate your grains between milks!
