@margaret cunningham This Vinegar Tip is actually a bad Tip. I love Becky and her Channel, but she isn't a professional Soaper. Using Vinegar to neutralize Lye on your Skin is a Myth. Please, do not do this, unless you want a Lye Burn. If you read the MSDS for the Lye, it even specifies to use Water to neutralize the Lye on your Skin, and not Vinegar. The reason for this is because of the Exothermic Reaction (heat) produced. Water is neutral on the PH Scale, while Vinegar is considered an Acid. When Lye Water hits your Soap Oils, it starts to heat up because of the Acidity of the Oils. Vinegar can absolutely neutralize Lye. But, it is only recommended to neutralize it with Vinegar on your Countertops or Floors. The Exothermic Reaction from Vinegar neutralizing Lye on your Skin will cause it to heat up much faster and can result in a Lye Burn from it. Always run the Lye Spill under Cold Water, as the heat caused on your skin won't be as bad as the Vinegar would have been.

Oh hell no. She doesn't show herself weighing the ingredients but never make soap by volume. All those ounces are WEIGHT. One ounce is 30g. You can do the math from there, but ALWAYS weigh your ingredients.

I agree the mix makes a very nice body bar. I made some with pure corn oil. It took forever for them to set hard, but it was an awesome shaving soap. Very smooth and creamy lather.

Actually you can substitute oils, only if they are comparable, but you have to run it through the soap calc, which is a lye calculator.

@the little fair lady Cold Process Soaps (like this Recipe here) need at least 72 Hours for the Saponification Process, or else you can still have Lye remaining in your Soap still. Just because it is Hard in less than 24 hours, does not mean that it is finished. There is still a process going on. The 6 week cure is to allow enough time for the water content to evaporate. Otherwise it will dissolve too fast inside a bath/shower. A fully cured bar will last a lot longer as all water has Evaporated out. But you still want to wait for Saponification to finish before using it, even if you don't wait for the evaporation to finish.

@@_Diana_S No. Most soaps are perfectly fine after 24 hours. The up to 72 hours depends a lot more in regards to the recipe and how it sets up. I feel as if soaps placed in the freezer to avoid gel phase, are the soaps that take longer to Saponify. But as I am not a master of Cold Process, this is just a theory. I much prefer Hot Process a lot better, and cooking my soap. But to answer your question, there is no need to keep it wrapped for 3 days. Coconut Oil soaps actually get very hard (because you are using a hard oil to make the soap), and you might even want to cut it before the 24 hours is finished. A 100% (soft/liquid) oil soap (such as Castile/Bastile soaps) are the only soaps I would recommend leaving in the mould for over 24 hrs.

+jessica kiefer You give me confidence to try it myself :-) BTW...glitter, if it gets in the eye, can cause damage because a lot of it is glass bits. Don't know if I would try it but maybe it's OK if it's in the soap.

I'll have to come up with something else.....maybe colored coconut flakes??? hmmmmmm...I need to think on this a bit.....lol Do try this soap....it was as easy as she makes it in the video.....I'm a novice soap maker here.....Now, Terri, it's not the best soap out there to be made....It's just good smelling basic soap for dummies like me. I like it...Maybe ask Becky if she could make a smaller recipe if you don't want to waste this much to try the soap....I bet she could cut her recipe down if you asked......I couldn't. +jessica kiefer Instead of glitter, you can use micas (many different colors available) from a reputable soap making supply store. I sometimes use the mica colors, as well as a translucent mica, which to me sparkles more like hardcore glitter. :)

jessica kiefer Thanks! D H's idea of using mica maybe an excellent one! Have you ever tried mica? If not, you can get mica in just about any color including silver - and it shimmers! It's more expensive per oz to buy at the store (as opposed to online) but you can get it in small quantities there to try it out and see if it works for what you want. Keep us posted as to how it turns out. OK?!!

georgia adams You do not have to superfat at trace. You can calculate the superfat in the amount of oils or more accurately, the amount of lye you use in your formulation with a lye calculator. Soapcalc.net allows you to type in the amount of superfat you would like. The default is 5%. Please see this article: candleandsoap.about.com/od/soapmakingbasics/ht/htsuperfat.htm ... towards the bottom the author states that ""Some people and/or recipes will suggest holding out your most luxurious oils or butters to add in at trace as the "superfat" oils. I've never seen any concrete tests or data on this - but I don't think it's worth the trouble."" Apparently, this is something that is debated among soap-makers... the articles I saw state to superfat anywhere from 3-8%... but that also increases the chance of oils going rancid within your soap and you can get Dreaded Orange Spots (DOS).

You are looking for 100% lye as a loose white granulated powder. When I first started out making soap I bought Red Devil lye from the grocery, I didn't realize that it had hardened up (or that it mattered) and had to be chipped apart. Normally you want a container that you can hear hear the small granules moving around, you do not want something that you will have have to bang apart and potentially through pieces around the room or into your face or eyes. What I am using now is Rooto, "Crystals of Household 100% Lye". It's packaged in a white 16 oz plastic bottle with red blue and yellow writing. UPC 037904103025 and is listed on Amazon as "Rooto 1030 1 Lb. Drain Cleaner with Lye". That UPC code will bring up pictures in google to aid in locating it at your grocery or hardware store.

When you drizzle some of the liquid off of the mixing spoon/mixer onto the main mass, it will leave an obvious bump in the material. Kind of like a thick sauce that you can see the trace of the drizzle long after you have, what (?) done the drizzling???

keepmoving15 As, another experienced soaper, this video is not the best for beginning soapers ! It lacks information, and theories of what soaping is about and why she is doing each procedure. She didn't even put in her 5% super fat into her soap. That soap is going to be really drying to the skin. There are better videos on You Tube. Soap Queen TV, and Soaping 101, just watch from beginning. I really like Becky's other videos, but her soaping videos lack a lot of information that is needed for the beginning soaper. Instead, of getting mad at people that are more experienced in soap making than Becky, think about it and walk away, and consider it a learning experience.

There is a KZfaq video on how to use soapcalc. Watch it because it will be very helpful. The person goes slow and explains well. You are very smart....you can do it and you will love it because it is so helpful! :)

+shannon hogle I'm glad I looked, because I didn't want to ask the same question twice! I was trying to get an understanding from her as to what the lye does. I'd be afraid to use anything that contained lye on my skin and that of my kids and grandkids. Can the soap be made without the lye?

+shannon hogle She made a video about that...most people who never made soap don't know...you cannot make soap without lye...but there is no lye in soap ;) "soap" is the result of the chemical reaction between the lye and the oils (fat)...as she said in her video, there are no soap you will buy at the store that wasn't made with lye...even the melt and pour soap you can buy, were made at the base with lye, water and oils... :)

However, when making soap, you do have to be careful not to put too much lye in your recipe because if the ratio of lye to oil is to great of a difference, you can end up with soap that burns your skin. For first time soap makers, you should always try making soap by a tried and true recipe before you begin experimenting to make your own recipes.

Really the major reason I have vinegar on me is because if you spill the lye it’ll help neutralize it and be easier to clean

My daughter and I have made cold process soap for several years. I have had a tiny splash or two, and the vinegar quickly neutralized it! I'm speaking from experience.

Actually you can make 100% coconut oil soap if you add some extra for superfat to counteract the dryness. I make it all the time

Her recipe is almost perfect except that you need to subtract about 20 percent of the coconut oil and replace it with coco butter, if not you'll find that the soap will dry your skin and if you have sensitive skin it may even irritate your skin.
