The way 4AD/23e presented their bands visually was unprecedented and legendary. No one can take that away from the label as it was back in the day. Each album cover was beautiful and evocative and it was basically impossible not to buy and eagerly await the next one. That was a stellar period in the art of the album. The insistence on mercurial quality in the presentation of the amazing bands on just that one label at that time made history that continues to resonate.

@@thesoundlikechameleons2082 I was just playing the Mesh and Lace album a couple of days ago and paused to admire the odd mystery of the cover. I was thinking how odd that both album covers for that and After The Snow were redesigned. The original covers were the best. Garlands was an amazing cover as were all to follow. One always looked forward to each release back in those days.

There's an interesting thread here about the sad impossibility of CT ever reuniting and the many bands that are influenced by them but can't reach similar heights in artistry. However, the three members of CT are putting out fresh music now. Liz with her partner released a fine EP as Sun's Signature. Simon partnered up with several artists and has been recording as Lost Horizons, a sound evocative of CT to the point of showing his influence on his former band. And finally, Robin never stopped recording as a solo artist and with late friend Harold Budd, and for a while led Violet Indiana with a very different singer, releasing under their name several tracks originally intended for CT's scrapped latest album. So life goes on albeit on unpredictable paths.

I agree milk and kisses was a instant classic. Every track was great. Violaine and Erpedu are amazing. I can't believe they just parted like that. The music sounded as if they were getting started. Violaine gives me goosebumps every time i play it. There will never be a band or artist of that calibur ever again.

I love the earlier stuff best. I felt they became a wee bit uninspired and began to repeat themselves later on. I still love some of the later stuff like Oil Of Angels, Evangeline, Summerhead, Violaine, Serpentskirt, but I felt they sort of sunk into a safeness in the later years.

Couldn't agree more. Continued to refine their sound and could have been on to new and very exciting things, but it was clearly impossible for them. Personal issues were too much, and it's part of their story, course. Well, their lives.

Great to see Liz and Simon looking so relaxed and chatty here..... not long after this point they sadly disbanded (Robin's absence may explain something).... Does anybody realise that the man interviewing them is none other than Richard Jobson (of the Skids and The Armoury Show) - fellow Scot and everything. Probably explains why the duo are so talkative here!! :)

@@ouime7337 The song is about her ex Jeff Buckley who drowned in the Mississippi River while the song was being recorded. In 1984 long before she met Jeff, Liz covered 'Song To The Siren' with 'This Mortal Coil' which was written by Jeff's Father, Tim Buckley. In Greek mythology the Sirens would lure sailors to a watery death with their music.

This was the end for Cocteau Twins. They disbanded a year later (1997) after the release of their last album, Milk & Kisses. They broke up as a couple in 1993. It was difficult emotionally for Liz to be in the same place at the same time as Robin. The personal relationship between them was too broken and by 1997 she'd had enough. All Robin's fault and all due to drugs

I feel a great sadness when I think that not long after this interview they would be separated. After wonderful work, beautiful music ... I think maybe they still had breath for more 2 or 3 albums and suddenly it was over. I don't know, of course they had their reasons, but I never quite understood why the band broke up. Just when they were a magical musical moment. Cocteau is the band I love most. How I miss new music of them .

I resonate with your words. I would love to see them live even on a bad day. Timeless classics:

Jesus, you take the words out my mouth. It literally sounded like they got really comfortable with they're instruments. My God they made the most amazing music ever and they are deeply underrated. God bless the twins.

Good interviewer... why is this so rare. Cocteau Twins are shy but this guy could get good answers from them. It's not like they arent trying.

Liz is so cool man. The shirt looks so smart and mainstream but then the necklace looks like a bondage chain, which gives it this subversive hard look. It suits her manner, her constant striving for a totally authentic representation of herself -- hard to soft, serious to foolish, changing from second to second. People interpret that kind of display of the inner self as "anxiety" these days, they pathologise it -- partly because people have become so conformist and controlling. That freedom to express reactions makes people who are unaccustomed to express or experience Liz's kind of volatile liveliness nervous. But to me it's just being full of life and generosity, a kind of personality worth celebrating and striving for and I fucking love you for that, Liz Fraser.

They were channeling something extremely powerful (hint: the Siren) when they were writing and performing, especially Fraser.

I saw them twice. The first show in 1990 had a great venue, but Liz had a "sore throat" and we got 3 songs then they quit. She sounded dreadful. The I saw them again in March 1994 and they sounded awful because the venue was bad it was just a wash of noise and Liz was buried in the mix. Love the band but, they never sounded very good live when I saw them.

+Jim Walker from all the live videos I agree, problem is she does like 3 parts of vocals on a studio track, her anxiety got in the way

Also, it is BLOODY hard to sing against those guitars in a live situation. It can be mixed properly in a studio environment but if you haven't got a technician at each and every gig that understands the fragility of Liz's voice, you're not gonna get the best out of her. I remember her throat *bleeding* from trying to sing live against the guitars.

Yup. Saw them on the last two tours. First time, Liz did the Sinead O'Connor "shriek" through much of the show to compensate for the volume on the guitars. Not a fan of that style of singing at all. Second time was much better (smaller venue, and thus less space to fill with sound). They were very, very good; but if Liz ain't at 100%, it's just not going to cut it.

I too was priveliged to see them live twice - first time supported by Seefeel at the UEA in Norwich (14 Feb 1994 .. my idea of how valentine's day should be celebrated) and at the Ritz in Manchester in 1996 (a rescheduled gig because Liz lost her voice for the original date and had to postpone) I just wished I'd got to see them live in the mid 80s. Both were wonderful gigs, but yes, Liz struggled to compete against the ocean of sound. Both times I was mesmerized not by Liz, but by Simon - he's incredibly skilled and very underrated. He seems so personable, with a self-deprecating sense of humour.

I read that Liz often got stage-fright live and that affected the quality of her singing. I can certainly hear that on a couple bootlegs I have. I love Liz's singing but always loved the guitar sounds best. Twins did struggle with a lot of issues when performing, at least until the later years when technology improved.

I don’t really gel with the last couple of albums that much, but ‘Alice’ violaine B-Side is without a doubt my favourite track they ever did and possibly one of the last recorded?. It was also used on the Lovely Bones which was a perfect choice. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/id9iopmV36udp2w.html
