Having grown up around a lot of cops, my impression was they found the security smurf highly amusing - they were highly amused with the smurf and wanted to see him try to actually do something prior to getting knocked out. The ones I knew way back would treat security guards like that - watch them fumble around making mistakes and getting in trouble and only getting involved when absolutely necessary to prevent an injury or arrest somebody for starting something. Cops are dicks that way. Another example would be watching bums or drunk idiots fight until one is down and out and then arrest them for various charges - some of which they could have prevented if they had done their jobs correctly.

To be fair, the front desk was probably told to ask for ID and have people sign in. They were probably not told that neither is a legal requirement. I blame the leadership for not making that clear. I also blame the front desk worker who didn't want to be filmed in a public place. Everyone should know by now that you don't have any protections against being filmed or photographed in a public place.

Typical cop obfuscation, making a rule that you don't have to follow, but if you do then you get bound by the rule for the duration. Sort of like P.D.'s putting up those cameras that mail traffic tickets to people. You don't have to pay them no matter what letter/threats they send. But if you do pay them, you confessed to the crime and are screwed.

My city had a sign-in sheet but people were putting down fake names. So the city made a law that we had to show our ID and sign-in. We told the city on facebook that it is not legal. Within days, the sign-in sheet was gone because they found out the constitution still applies to Americans.

My Brother, and his wife, who lives there in Southampton NY went to the town hall just yesterday. He said he walked right in past the security guard booth and then turned around and asked him where the office was that they wanted to go to and the guard told him the directions. He wasn't filming but he didn't sign in, tell his name or anything. They just went up the stairs to the second floor to do their business. You must have made an impact Sean and we are thankful and indebted to you for making our lives easier. Props.

Few things here. One, not everyone has access to the internet. Two, you are ignoring the fact that this is a public space. Meaning anyone can be there so long as they follow date, time and manner restrictions and they are not required to identify themselves in order to be there. Three, obstruction is a physical act and refusing to give up your right to be secure in your person, unmolested, and the right to prevent unlawful search and seizure(asking to take Gov. issues ID for any amount of time is a search and seizure) cannot be obstruction. Fourth, obstruction is a secondary charge. Meaning you need a primary charge first in order to be legally charged with obstruction. We have seen time and time again that being in a public space and recording is not obstruction, according to the courts. We have also seen time and time again that even when we(the public) complain about serious rights violations, committed against us by our government; rarely does something come of it. We need to hold our government accountable. We need to learn our right. We need to exercise our rights. If history has taught us anything it is that history will repeat itself without education of history. Without these things we can very rapidly become slaves to the government with no rights.
