I just completed week 4 of a 13-week bootcamp and she isn’t kidding when she says “get ready to be uncomfortable.” Bootcamps challenge you in SO many ways and i think psychological challenges are rarely spoken about but; if you’ve ever dealt with issues around “not enoughness” , a bootcamp WILL force you to face that part of you. I had a tremendously hard time for the first 3 weeks because the old narrative from my school days of “not being good enough at logical stuff” surfaced EXTRA hard. I’m surprised how much I’ve retained in the last 4-weeks, but in comparison to my cohort of 7, I’m definitely not at the front of the pack and that can mess with you. Another thing ive noticed is that a bootcamp requires A LOT of time and dedication, BUT again with the psychological factor; if you just CANT eat, breathe and sleep coding...its ok. You cant do your best work if you’re sacrificing the rest of your life to such an extent that you start becoming depressed, anxious, etc. Don’t take a bootcamp lightly because the time really does fly by, but also allow yourself a weekend if that will help “recharge” you to better tackle the week to come.

Yeah, u definitely can get tired when learning challenging things. I have to go slowly and absorb and rest between pages of a book. I am not doing Bootcamp before I self-teach it to myself first. Then I'd just learn it better second time around. I have a two-year CS degree and some used to joke I must like pain. For some reason, I am drawn to code even though I am not at all of the right kind of mind to master it. I just like coding. There is something about it.

@@ankita_156 You guys should learn how to deal with it though. I've learned to be confident in my skin socially. I'm almost a 75% social butterfly. I've learned to give to people, trained with their perspective. having used comedy for my social currency for awhile and then honing in on my empathetic/social skills I've come to realize the latter is much better in terms of how people value you in a social way.

One tip for learning coding is working smart as opposed to hard. It doesn't matter how many hours you put in if you're not understanding the basic concepts. It's as simple as that.

What a cute but regurgitated saying. People say this all the time because 1. It’s true 2. It makes them feel good about looking smart but rarely do people include and write examples that others can walk away with something actionable. 😐

hi. So some courses are shorter and far less expensive. It really depends on how many languages the program is offering and the number of classes. For example, there is a 5-week BrainStation python course that's $2,500 and the classes are only 3 hours. You'd have to put in some time outside of the program of course, but you can start off with programs like those.

Great info. I've been taking basic courses on udemy and have officially caught the coding bug. I've been looking into bootcamps as well. But what have you noticed in the hiring process about having a degree? How much do hiring managers actually care about that?
@junehanabi1756
@junehanabi1756 4 жыл бұрын
Degrees are straight BS, college education for programming is straight BS. If an employer isn't honest about that with you then their lying. Even Blizzard, Google and many other big names as well as small business will tell you that. the problem is every freaking person in the world and their pet dog want to be a programmer. They want to study for a week and then line up and get a job. For every programming job out there there's a line a mile long or further. Networking is the key to getting in, because otherwise you're probably never going to get in. A college degree is something people use try try and get noticed ahead of the line but it didn't take long before everyone went out and also got a degree so degrees are mostly useless now even in that regard. I'd say the only way to get in is with Networking. The saddest part though is most people get into programming only for the money. They don't give a crap about programming. They're just using it as another 9-5 job that pays really well. You can spot these people a mile away too because they reek of no passion at all for the job, you can easily spot they're their just for the money. This is one reason it's so hard to get into programming because the 100 people in front of you don't care about programming at all and you do so how do you get recognized, you can't. That's the sad part, there's no way for you to stand out short of an epic project from the others who don't care about programming. I keep going back to networking, you have to have somebody in the company or who knows high-ups in the company to speak on your behalf to get you in the door because you're likely never going to get in standing at the front door and that's the sad reality programming has come to.

Hey Maddie. I completed Thinkfuls Full Stack Software Engineering Immersion course and they had a "living stipend" option in the Income Share Agreement (ISA) I signed. Although I am now repaying it, it was definitely worth it. It is not much to live on these days, at $1500 a month for 6 months, but it certainly helped. I am paying 10% of my income for the next 3 years to them, in return. The repayment starts when you get a job earning $40k per year or greater. So, I will be repaying them somewhere between $14k - $16k back total, but about half of that was given to me in cold hard cash, when it was absolutely crucial to tearing down a barrier to my learning process. Very grateful for it and I had a good experience with Thinkful.

Dude there are some really good ones out there(meaning they have a high job placement after graduation rate) however, I think this statistic is relative to the amount of demand in your area. If there are many tech jobs in your area, it should be easy to get interviews on your own. If there aren't any jobs in the area then you might wanna consider moving to a large city. If you want the skills of a bootcamp without having to pay, just download their curriculum from their website and use it as a learning path.

You don't have to be, but it helps. Let me give you some advice. Don't worry about what could cause you issues with trying a bootcamp. Begin to learn code on your own, and when you are faced with problems, reach out to different communities. You will be surprised, how willing people are to help, if you just ask. There are plenty of sub-reddits that are based on the different codes such as python, java, ruby, etc.., and people on those can be extremely helpful. Don't worry about your weaknesses, approach problems as they come, and do everything within your power to solve them, when you can't solve them, seek help from others. Don't shy away from changing you life when the only thing that is holding you back is algebra, thats just an excuse my dude.

I’m currently in a 9 month full stack program at Bethel tech which is an extension of bethel school of supernatural ministry out of Redding, California. It’s pretty spendy. Just started my 3rd month and we’ve covered html, css, JavaScript, and now we are in the midst of React. For some reason, JSX in React is really overwhelming. I love coding, but this program kicks my butt. It moves so fast!

I think if you don't have a degree in CS, I suggest you attach projects together with your CV when you apply (For web development, there are tools you can use to convert html files to urls). That way, there's a higher chance that the HR will entertain you. Once that happens, the rest is up to exams and interviews

Depends on your MOS man. They'll train you up in whatever your job is. My advice: if you're doing it for professional development after you get out, then MAYBE go for it. If you're doing it to prepare you for your job, don't. They'll train you well and you'll have opportunities to pursue higher education on the side on the government's dime, ESPECIALLY with the AF (coming from a marine here pursuing a comp sci degree). Additionally, you'll get the GI Bill so you're probably better off saving your money.

@bachpotato
@bachpotato 4 жыл бұрын
Blaine Peoples If you already have a degree in engineering, getting a job could take you as fast as a month. Without one, you have to a) be at the top of your cohort and b) have luck on your side for it to take 3-5 months. 6-10 months is a more realistic time frame, but even then, a job is not guaranteed. I know people who are still unemployed after finishing bootcamp 1.5 years ago.
