In this video, I got over the time that I spent at my bootcamp. This is a pretty long video so I've annotated major portions of the story. As I mentioned in the video, this is part two of the story of how I became a software engineer. You can see the first video here: • How I Learned to Code ... However, this video is self-contained so don't have to see the first video to understand what's going on here.
Part I of this story here: • How I Learned to Code ...

Wow, great story time. It sounds like you have done a lot of reflecting on your experiences. My Bootcamp experience went a completely different way as there was just too much focus on getting it done by any means. I have since found out that the precious few minutes afterwards are needed in to just play with what was built and learn more by breaking it and fixing it, so lots of potential lessons were missed which means I am going back now and just totally reviewing and breaking things just to learn even more now! I wish that my cohort was as tight as yours but it seems like mine just split to the four corners right afterwards with only three of the 8 graduating of the original 14 staying in touch. So far, its been 3 months and only 2 have got a job, so maybe that means we are on track, who knows and I can't wait to see what happens at 6 months and a year out. There wasn't any focus on pair programming when it is needed I think, as it felt like you were on your own unless you spoke up and asked everyone for help before being left behind.

It’s been over two years since my bootcamp experience. I know that the first year out was pretty hard for a lot of my cohort members. I got pretty lucky and found work pretty quickly but a lot of my friends took upwards to a year to find work. Also not all of them went to the developer route. Some went into pm, quality, solutions engineer and etc. it sounds like your at the point where a lot of your cohorts will start landing jobs. Three to six was the average for my cohort. I also agree with you that a bootcamp is not enough time to really nail down the details. I spent 6months alone after finding my work just studying data structures and algorithms while working full time as a developer. Not that I needed to do this but because I really wanted to grow as an engineer and perfect my craft. Anyways Keep me posted about your job search ;) and thanks for watching.

Is someone 18 years old too young to attend a coding bootcamp?
@jonnykvids
@jonnykvids 5 жыл бұрын
Logix Indie I don’t think so. I know someone who took a leap year before he started his first year of college. Did hackreactor and got a internship at a tech company. They even gave him a offer but he decide to go to college instead after his leap year. Overall not a bad idea if you can afford it

@@logixindie We had a few people there that was doing the bootcamp before college and some taking a gap quarter in the middle of college. Suggest that you know your goals before you go however, if it is just to bypass college, then your focus will be different than someone that is wanting the skills so that they can do side projects while going to college, and use the off time in college to build their projects later. I do suggest doing as much pre work and algos that you can so your time beforehand.

Hey John, great videos man. It's always great to hear a successful programmer's story for morale and motivation. I'm also from San Jose and plan on going to a coding bootcamp really soon. Why Dev Bootcamp vs other bootcamps like App Academy, Hack Reactor, or even Coding Dojo since it's in San Jose? I can't see myself doing the commute or living in SF, so my top option right now is Coding Dojo. Coding Dojo has a 3 Stack curriculum (Python-based stack, C#-based stack/Ruby on Rails stack, and the MEAN stack). From your video, it almost seems like you worked on multiple stacks/languages as well. What is your opinion on this? I'm primarily studying and interested in web development through Javascript. Thanks! And keep the videos coming. :)

So did you go back to your old job after you graduated or just immediately start looking for a sotware engineering job?

I looked immediately. It took me about two months to land two offers.
