He bought camera gear with some money from his parents and he would travel (again on his parents money) maybe twice or three times a year. On those trips they didn’t relax. They literally only took cool pictures. Day in and day out. Then he would post those pictures intermittently throughout the next year. It made it look like he was all over the world but he really lived in the Midwest and vacationed three times a year. He also wouldn’t tag the locations each time he posted so it wouldn’t look like he uploaded from Michigan. He would say he was in Hawaii at some beach when he was really in his dorm posting pictures of a Mexico vacation from months before. Allllll smoke and mirrors.

As someone who does travel permanently (as a journalist), I can vouch for the fact that unless you are a trust fund baby you will be living pretty rough 90% of the time. There is also the very, VERY obvious fact that if you have the luxury of travelling at all, let alone full time, you are from a very privileged minority of the world. When you go to a developing country and take photos of their blue-ass water maybe take a moment to look around and see what that water means to the people to whom it belongs, the citizens of said country. Remember that you are damn lucky to be experiencing their water, especially since 99% of them will never be able to do the same with yours. Remember that by selling an ideal to your audience using their water you are exploiting their resources. Remember that your passport gets you visas, not your intelligence or any personal achievement. Remember that the wealth of your country gets you the income needed to go on your eat-pray-love adventure, not hard work. I say this as someone for whom all of this is true.

I love the final message in this video, it's really important to remind people that social media content is curated, staged and retouched. Even for people who are legit travel influencers as opposed to just trust fund kids, most of their time is spent dealing with the brands they work with (usually hotel chains), and certainly a hellscape of immigration bureaucracy for all the countries they go to. It's not a constant vacation, it's a job and much like other entertainment jobs, we only see the fun parts by design.

This was actually such a good video and message. Love how cody can make a video which both is funny and keeps me entertained and be genuine at the same time.

This is a breath of fresh air. All my friends follow FART social media bloggers so closely and get easily stuck in this mindset that they are wasting their lives going to school and working jobs at restaurants or stores when they should be living like this. I try not to, but I get caught in it too sometimes and it sucks because I could never live like that without working my butt off for years. Yes, follow your dreams, but don't get lost in an illusion. This honestly brought me back to what matters to me. It makes me see the value of working my day job and going to school even more than I did already. I'm actually pretty happy with my life right now, it's not where I want to be in 7 years, but it's good for now.

Honestly, this is exactly what I needed to hear. Several people from my high school are ALWAYS traveling (most of my town is uppity) and I'm working at a law firm from 8 AM to 5 PM just trying to save up money so I can finish college. And they don't have jobs so it has to be their parents' money. It's crazy! It would depress me to no end, feeling like I'm wasting my youth. But what you said at the end made me tear up because it is EXACTLY what I needed. It reminded me that what I'm doing is actually pretty cool and I'm gaining an experience that they don't have - an actual human being life that they'll have to come back to, eventually.
