The FIFTY - 39/50 - What the F#$* is an Uber Tour?

Sometimes the crux of a line is just figuring out what the line is. Such is the nature of "The Uber Tour", a line that is listed in the The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America but nobody seems to know what exactly it is. Piecing together the description in the book as best as possible, The FIFTY sets out on a link up of the N Face of Mt. Rogers and the absolutely classic NE Face of Swiss Peaks. Facing the challenges of timing the Winter Permit openings in Glacier National Park with the right conditions, along with a long, complex and big day to link up two steep lines in the Roger's Pass vicinity, the crew go for what could be one uber of a tour.
Co-Starring Greg Hill and Emma Patterson

Pretty much all climbing anchors are generally in the exempt and/or in a gray are of LNT ethics. They are safety devices for moving through mountains so have a sort of different categorization of 'things left behind'. In ethical terms, you should minimize amount of material left behind, clean old material left behind and try to put them in less obvious (but safe) places.

The book seems to have a very loose definition of classic. A route that no one has ever heard of? A couloir that had never been skied before? Oh yeah, total classics!
@CodyTownsend

Oh that couloir had definitely been skied before. In fact, Greg Hill has the first descent on it. The NE Face of Swiss is definitely a classic. One of the better lines I've skied honestly.
@src248
@src248 Жыл бұрын
@@CodyTownsend I wrongly assumed the authors were part of the group that had skied it. Classic implies some level of lasting popularity. Call it a remarkable line or a hidden gem, I just don't think "classic" is the right word for a line that only 3 groups have attempted, especially when two of those groups did it because of the book. Not a critique of the lines themselves!
@CodyTownsend
@CodyTownsend Жыл бұрын
Like I said, NE face of Swiss is a classic in exactly that sense. It's one of the most sought after great lines in the Selkirks. The "Uber Tour" is just kind of something the author of the blurb made up for the book I'd guess. But that author is MIA, so know one really knows what he was thinking of with putting it in there. Regardless, even if the Uber Tour is a mystery, it brings you to ski the NE Face of Swiss. So it's sort of accomplishes the intended goal...but just in a round about way.

There is a lot of description in the book... but it's all a bit confusing in reality. Yeah, well that's a question for the authors...but all things said, though the "Uber Tour" may not be a thing, the NE Face of Swiss is most definitely one of the most sought after lines in the Selkirks. Its one of the better lines of the project imho. So to me, it ended up all working out.
