@SensiblePrepper awesome idea for a ready survival kit. A couple items that can be added... as for a container for cooking/boiling water, it would be easy enough to place a clean soup/tin can inside the container. In addition, a small wind of bailing wire or 10-12 GA copper wire to fashion a handle or bail for the tin can. As well, the other uses of these are plentiful. A small wind of cable wire too, can be added to fashion a snare trap. I'm certain, we can all design additions and customize such kits in a variety of ways. Truly ingenious concept!

The Tacoma Mountain Rescue Council kits they made years ago taught me one important lesson. Use a metal container that can be used to heat/boil water for your kit. Plastic containers have very limited utility. Quart size paint cans, bought new, are great for a kit this size. Don’t forget wire to fashion a bale, and other uses. Edit: The original TMRC kit was in a pocket size tobacco tin. Later kits, also sold by REI, were in a square can. The whole focus of the kit was hypothermia.

1) There are tons of plastic containers at grocery stores with screw top wide mouth lids so you don't have to tape the lid. 2) The bandana works as a Tourniquet with the multi tool as the winder. 3) Finally, to comment on the cheap space blanket. My dad set out too late in the day to hike Pyramid Peak in Desolation Valley CA and found himself in pitch darkness heading back just a half mile from his car because of overcast sky. This was before cellphones and he had no flashlight but he did have a flimsy space blanket in his camera case. After tripping and bumping his knee along the steepest section of the Horsetail Falls area, he realized he couldn't continue without endangering his life. So he found the foil blanket and wedged himself between a boulder and a pine tree and settled in for the night. The space blanket absolutely saved him from getting hypothermia. Conclusion, they do work and they're so thin, inexpensive and light every go bag should have at least two. One to wrap yourself and the 2nd to reflect campfire heat.

Two changes I'd consider are a small pencil and a couple sheets of weatherproof paper to leave a note. I would also switch the flashlight to a AA from a AAA. If you need replacement batteries, a AA flashlight would be able to use both types if it is up to scavenging for batteries, and AA's are more common I believe.

I would point out one small correction. Steel with high carbon is necessary if you are using a traditional flint and steel. Tiny pieces of steel are being shaved off and spontaneously ignited by flint, chert, obsidian...anything harder than the steel. A modern ferrocerium rod uses the reverse concept. Small shavings of the ferro rod are ignited, instead of the metal that strikes it. It can be used with anything harder than it. It need not be high carbon. The key is a sharp 90 degree spine on a knife. Flint, and even a sharp piece of glass works well too. I realize there's really no more space, but I might suggest a mini Bic lighter. You can put a small plastic zip tie around it and under the button to prevent the butane from escaping if it gets accidentally pressed. Also, a few sewing needles and thread--maybe a button or two could be added to the fishing kit for very little space. Storm matches are great, too. Those tiny birthday candles that automatically re-light are a great flame extender. Great video! I learned a few things.

Or carry a Sierra cup on your belt when outdoors. I wish someone made a mini canteen cup, stainless steel, that would fit in your coffee jar. 7. At least 2 Bic (or equal quality) lighters. Ferro rod is okay, but why start with spark when you can start with flame? 8. Stick candle, 4 or 5 inches high, 1” diameter. Provides light and heat in shelter for hours. Saves on batteries. 9. Wire saw for cutting shelter poles, firewood. 10. In your pocket, Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, Huntsman model. It has an excellent saw and many other useful tools.

7:00 please stop putting safety pins in fishing kits. This is your chance to give yourself the best chance at survival, don’t give yourself sub-par gear. You’ve got enough room in that container for a SUPER robust fishing/trapping kit with legitimate gear, you don’t need to set yourself up for failure by adding pins instead of hooks. You’ve got room for both.

Best thing is to avoid using your knife for anything other than knife chores. A piece of common hacksaw blade can be taped to any ferro rod or DOANS bar and/or tied with a piece of cord and works just dandy. No risk of cutting yourself or something you didn't want to or damaging your valuable knife. ( the knife you have with you is your most valuable posession at that time)

If you use metal coffee can, the can, Can be a stove or a pot to hold/boil water. Add a hobo/wax stove(a pellet tin is my favorite!) & extra fuel, replace fire tender with it. Practice cooking on it & adding fuel while stove is lit. Wax isn’t explosive or really flammable by its self so it’s great for long term storage in cars. Add a few plastic grocery bags so you can carry the gear in coffee can & carry the can with water in it , much easier. Hanki/bandana should be upgraded to a big fire resistant hanki. Maybe 2… one hundred & 2 uses for bandana! ✌️🤟🤙

My supplier of colostomy supplies has an alternate mailing address and I have an alternate pharmacy in case of a disaster. Most people don't think of these things. I kinda like the idea of the stealth aspect of it all. You know it it’s there but nobody else does. In a way you’re protecting yourself by protecting your kit. it’s basically there when you need it in a pinch. Somebody tried breaking into your home wouldn’t immediately suspect that that coffee in your kitchen held a gun or matches. I like that idea of scalable prep too. One prep can be for one day, which fit into the prep for three days…three months…three years and so on. Like those Russian toys a small doll inside a bigger one…and up and up. Like the planning strategy of soldiers, one prep for very short term inside a bigger inside bigger. That way you scale your prep to the current situation and so forth. What other stealthy prep, would you recommend the common homeowner to have? What hidden prep did you have in your car for example? You can have hidden prep in with your spare tire, for example. Maybe even some in with your engine… One key development I liked most about the flashlight was it was easy to use with the paracord and hang the light inside of your clothing. The main idea of any type of kit that can take a lanyard. Put a small lanyard on each of them before you put them in your kit. it’s a whole lot easier to add another lanyard.

Great vid, Sootch! Two things I think I would include that I have done in similar kits in the past are: 1) A folded decent size piece (or two to double up for dyrability) of heavy duty aluminum foil. Among other uses, you can fashion a "cup"/small pan in order to boil water. 2) A very small sewing kit for repairs. It would fit. Even if it was just a couple heavy duty needles and a good hank of black upholstery thread. I like including a small thimble too. I found a nice little one that is small and is brass/maluable so it can be "squashed" a little bit to fit smaller space and opened back to shape to fit on finger tip when needed. Thread can store inside it.

Bandana can actually be pretty important for the water part, too - you can use it to pre-filter sediment from the water so it doesn't clog your water filter. If you need to drink from a muddy water source it'll help quite a bit.

This is actually a good idea- if you brew your coffee. I buy store-brand (Giant Eagle) wet wipes in the 30- or 80-count containers, and after you use the wipes, the hinged, snapping lid makes it excellent for storing those same things for the car or survival (phone charging wires, batteries, lights, compass, fire-making, first aid, etc.) Then you add duct tape around the outside, obviously. Gorilla Glue an extra button compass to the underside of the lid. But the coffee container is still a good idea. Sorry, you can't boil water in the coffee container or in the plastic wipes container... No lanyard or carry strap?
@toml.8210

You would think people would give you the empty container, but it seems that they (coffee drinkers) are so selfish, that they have to put it in the recycle bin for trash day, instead of letting you recycle it for a survival container. Maybe they think all you need is an eye-phone, like have?
