The verdict is in... it's big. I give the full scoop on the hits and misses of Prusa's latest hotly-anticipated 3d printer, The XL with 5 toolheads. I somehow manage to pull a good cocktail recipe out of nowhere in the process.
If you decide this printer is a good fit for you and you want to purchase one, this referral link will give both you and me some rewards points in the Prusa Store, enough for some filament:www.prusa3d.com/product/origi...

This was great video. It was enjoyable because it didn't sound scripted or rehearsed, but very nice natural dialogue. 🤙 Subbed.

Totally agree! I hate those reviews that are cut like 100 times and make the person talking like a robot. Subbed as well.

Hi Prusa XL 5T owner here with 6+ years of printing experience. Thank you for your video but I respectfully disagree with your findings. I have my Prusa XL 5T for over a month now and it has been printing pretty much 24/7, mostly full build plates with intricate 3-5 colors models, virtually without any issues. I find it a truly amazing and very reliable machine. Consistent superb quality, no blobs and no stringing, super fast and minimal waste. The only issue I am occasionally having is PLA adhesion on the Satin Sheet. I have ordered a smooth sheet as I expect that to be a better match. Most 'problems' you have shown are not indicative to the machine but seem operator error. You have to have dry filament and you have to set the temperature right (The Nextruder is indeed rather sensitive to moisture and temperature). The XL seems to require a temp of about 10-15c less than what I am used to on my other printers. The prime tower failures are likely due to mixing different materials like PETG and PLA. They don't stick together and make the tower fail. You have to set the [Wipe tower extruder] setting to the odd type. If you have an exotic mix of filament types you can switch off the prime tower entirely. Operate it right and it will serve you right. Happy printing!

I've tried a variety of filaments, new and old, and I even dehydrated everything overnight and got the same issues. I did one print mixing PLA and PETG to test that method of support removal, and weirdly that one worked great. The wipe tower issue hasn't happened recently, since a PrusaSlicer update changed a lot since November when I shot this. I haven't tried reducing print temps that much, but I will try that now. Thank you!

That statement was spot on ... based on this and so many other reviews of that printer ... I gave up waiting for my order after 2 years and got a Bambu X1C ... and for the money for all those print heads you could have 2-3 X1C's ... I do love my Prusa's (MK2.5S, MK3S x 2) .... but I worry where Prusa will be in 2-3 years given what's happening to the market ...

Just a tip with filming make sure to turn off auto white balance so you dont get those swings in white balance from warm to cool. Otherwise look forward to more content.

If you only have the satin build plate, I strongly recommend getting both the PEI and Textured sheets. I'm not happy with the satin sheet on my MK3S. It has weak adhesion for long prints; a shame since the finish looks great on prints. The PEI sheet is great for PLA prints and the textured works well with PETG. PLA will stick to the textured but the sheet needs to be really clean. I found that PETG sticks too well to PEI and stopped printing with that combo as I didn't want to mess with applying glue stick to the sheet. Check out some of the other videos on Prusa XL. People have experimented with different positions for the wipe tower other than the default from PrusaSlicer.

Replying to myself here. I've since gotten my Prusa XL and I have all 3 primary sheet types: smooth, satin, textured. Maybe it is a change in production since I purchased the satin sheet for my MK3S several years ago. My experience with the XL satin sheet for PLA and PETG is that they stick too well and don't want to remove even after room temperature. I've printed ASA on the satin sheet, had some corner lifting and the whole print released once it reached room temperature.

The purge tower is often a problem. The solution is simple: Don't use a purge tower, but purge to infill. Not all brands of filament stick to the buildplate well enough. That's not a problem of the printer, but the filament. Just use some glue stick or other adhesive and set the build plat temperature slightly higher. Different filaments don't stick very well to other filaments. PLA and PETG barely stick to each other. Sometimes even different colours of the same brand can give problems. The main cause of blobs and stringing is the Z-hop. Just don't use z-hops and most blobs and strings will be gone.

There is such a wide spread variance of quality on this machine. My 5 tool head (fully assembled) works awesome and I don't have any of these issues. But yet for every one that's great there is another one that's terrible. I wonder what exactly is the variant that's causing this?

Re bed adhesion you could try to clean the bed by washing it in the sink and give it a VERY light scouring with a scouring pad. I had to do this for several Prusa textured beds (TL-21) for the Mk3 that were previously very hard to get adhesion on. Now the first layers adhere really well.

I have recently been using a scouring pad, and that plus a few other tweaks have helped a lot.

What a great intro! I laughed as soon as I realized where you were going with it, and again when you said the last couple lines of the intro. Well done! After watching many reviews of this printer, I know for my own sanity, I have to at least wait another year for them to get it to a (non-super annoying level) fully functional state. If the main thing people have tended to say that is great about Prusa is that the printers "just work", and they put out a printer that doesn't "just work" without issues, then they loose the only real selling point of their company over the competition. My guess is that by the time they get most of the problems worked out, there will be other much less expensive options that offer tool changing. I've already seen quite a few Voron designs with tool changing. I'm not dropping over $4K for the opportunity to beta test a printer.

Couple of things: 1st, did you make sure the little metal pressure tabs that the unused print heads rest against to keep pressure up in the nozzle are at the correct height? People who get blobs with the XL usually find that is the problem. 2) Did you wash your build plates, scrubbing them with a Scochbright GREEN scrubbing pad and dish soap to clean off the film left on the build plate from manufacturing? If you run water over the plate and the water beads and runs off at all, it needs to be scrubbed some more. Once that manufacturing coating is off, the build plate sticks much better to prints.
@alpantone
@alpantone 4 ай бұрын
I did make sure to check those tab things, and they were all adjusted properly from the factory. I have washed the plates with dish soap and water, but I hadn't used a scrubbing pad, I will need to try that now. Thank you!

@@alpantone Hope it helps! The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head for stringing/boogers is that several makers have found that the XL seems to be MORE susceptible to wet filament than other printers. (TADA 3D Printing, for one) Have you tried drying your filament to make sure it is bone dry?

"free" gummy bears :P I agree with your take. I think they rushed it out to try to slow the bleeding from the market pressures from Bambu. I still haven't completed my 5 head pre-order. Waiting to see if anyone else gets into the multi-head scene, for less money, and more polish...

you need to put an enclosure around it and depending on the filament you are using you may also need to heat the enclosure. I assume you have done a quick YT search on all of the current fixes to purge towers and other issues (there are simple adj in the slicer to get the purge tower more stabile). The latest firmware supposedly makes a big diff as well. I was one of the ones who ordered mine minutes into the release video, lol; but then canceled my order after a year later realizing they had sold the hardware equivalent of Vapor Ware. So then I shifted my attention to just adding MMU3 to one of my MK4's and 6 months later canceled that and went back to the queue for a 5 tool head XL. I am with you on the lack of intelligence on this printer, it should know when there is spaghetti and other issues. To me having to add an RPI with OctoPrint and spaghetti detection (and just being able to have a camera at all), seems a small insult on such an expensive printer. Any way, love your humor, will have to check other videos out. I've got over 30 years in Computer Science and get the feeling you will be dropping little programming gems here and there in your videos ;-)

I would not start tinkering on a 4k printer. I would not pay 4k for a printer that is not fully ready to be released. That's my 2 cents. Other than that, thank you for the honest review.

07:00 My MK4 also have bed damage after a few prints, a 2 year old Prusa Mini I never experienced significant damage like this. I'm not certain but really but maybe recent beds have lower quality for some reason? It's also strange that you have bed adhesion issues (maybe not so much the curling but if they come loose) because on these beds PLA sticks really good, so I have no clue whats up with that

It turned out to be a very minor scratch, but it had very thin filament smeared on it, so it wasn't bad once I took it off. No further damage after that.

Terrible products. Buy quality not this. I was cheated on my mk3s+ with mmu2 machine from Prusa. Worst machine and mmu2 should be in a class action law suite. It’s terrible.

LOL ... yea I am amazed there was never a class action on the MMU2 ... they are a complete pain to get to work properly. I just refused to give up and ... after A LONG TIME ... i learned how to dial it in ... now I have three of them and they all work really well. So much knowledge you require to make it work properly that you could write a book about it ... The MMU3 is way better ... but still not a plug and play device for a new user.

Yeah.... at $3500+.... we should not be wasting time assembling, tinkering vs printing straight out of the box. It's noble of Prusa to open source everything but unless key public contributors are compensated or their is profit sharing... people become free R&D.. Not all users are KZfaqrs with a revenue stream. I'll stick with Bambu & AMS and spend a bit more on filament.

Seems like you do not understand what 'open source' means because what you are saying make absolutely no sense. Open source doesn't mean it is developed by others, only that the developments are shared openly and at no cost with others. Prusa has invested more in innovation and development than any other company in the 3D printing market without protecting it with patents. Prusa has further always focused on quality, reliability and service. If anything they deserve praise for their intentions and what they have done for 3d printing.. not ignorant bashings. Enjoy your Bambu with AMS, seems like an awesome machine 🙂

Prusa is a company with over 700 employees, multiple subsidiaries/ partnerships and income in the 8 figures. They charge up to 4 grand for a beta product. It doesn't matter if it's open, closed or an ouroboros this is unacceptable if they need to rely on the [open] community to fix their product. "Prusa has invested more in innovation and development than any other company in the 3D printing market without protecting it with patents. Prusa has further always focused on quality, reliability and service. If anything they deserve praise for their intentions and what they have done for 3d printing.. not ignorant bashings." This is like pining after an EX but only thinking of the good times but not why you are no longer with them. They do not get a pass if they have been in this space for 15 years and push this beta product to their most loyal fans. They happily sold mk2/3/mini machines that were dog slow rushed the mk4. MMU2/3 units that barely worked and we are supposed to be happy Josepf cornered the "high end" market because his scraps fed the rest of the "also rans"? Prusa is not some scrappy young company "giving back to the community" they are a nearly 100million dollar international company now they need to act like it or the competition with further eat their lunch.

@@No0o0o0o0o0 exactly.. prusa's revenue is in the hundreds of millions.. Don't send out betas in the wild for people to feedback.. This is R&D that should be internal at this price. Or give them to the tester at a huge discount. There is no innovation is having multi head printers. Carriage change has been around in the CNC industry for decades and adopting it to these is not an innovation.
@clintyiu

@@cees9314 oh.. whether my interpretation of open source matches yours is irrelevant. The cost of this beta machine is not reasonable if they have not worked out ALL the bugs. I have not been at this 3D printing for long.. 3+ years prior to the bambu. But I gave it up because of the tweaking I had to do with Prusa and creality machines. The Bambu required next to zero work on my part to get prints to come out consistently every time. Commercial / industrial standard at a hobbyists price. Some of us rather print than tweak. That's all. For a company as large as Prusa the expectation is that they do most of not all the debugging inhouse for a machine at this price point. not bashing prusa.. all their other machines are great for their price point. This beta is not...
