When fighting Carl off, it’s better to bring his neck down and not lift it up as you try and push him back. An ostriches main defense is kicking. They can kick with a force of 2,000lbs per square inch. That’s a lot! He can kick so hard, he can still easily cause major internal injuries, even through your cardboard armor. Also, his wing flips are not happy movements. Wing flipping is a warning signal. It’s his first way of saying “Hey! Back off I’m uncomfortable!” If you continue to advance and ignore his warnings he will then puff out his wings to make himself look bigger in the hopes of scaring you away. If you still don’t give him his space, he will then charge in an attempt to chase you away. They are extremely territorial and they typically don’t make good pets unless they’ve been continuously raised around people from a chick. He will most likely never be a lovey dovey pet like the littles or other sanctuary animals. I commend you for rescuing him but with my experience caring for ostriches, he will most likely need a pasture of his own, otherwise he will most likely continue charging you when you enter the littles field.

The difference between Carl and Nugget is that the Cog Hill Family was lucky enough to get a hand raised emu, still very young that grew up knowing nothing but that family and given love and attention his whole life. Carl is a RESCUE animal. Probably no one but Carl knows wth he has been through in his life. I'm new to the channel and have enjoy watching your videos from years ago, up to the recent ones. Every video with Carl has me in tears from laughing so hard. Bless you, Lester and Jami, for giving him a forever home where he is loved every bit as much as Nugget! In the wild, male ostriches are the caretakers of their young, their protectors. Has he perhaps assumed this role for the littles? Has he taken over Annie's role? Maybe you should contact a Zoo or an animal park that have Ostrich.

When I volunteered at a zoo, the ostrich keeper said that ostrich normally are submissive to animals that are taller them. That is why they kept the ostriches with the giraffes. Maybe you could carry a tall stick with you when you are in with the babies. I know it would be inconvenient, but maybe you could come up with a way to make it hands free. Also, male ostrich raise their babies, so maybe he thinks of the littles as babies and that is why he is so protective of them.

Hi Lester, if it gets to the point where you feel you need to separate yourself from #Carl leave him in pasture with pond but don't close gate, jus put a chain, etc across the top of a opened gate that will hold him in and the other littles can walk up under to come to the barn. Jus a suggestion because I see that he is becoming a handful at times. Luv him, but you do what's best for you to not get injured.

You said it yourself Lester. Carl is 3 y/o. He's learning - and it's been 2 weeks so he feels safe with you. He's pushing the boundaries with you just like a toddler does. It looks like the same thing when a toddler tells you "NO!" when you say "Go gets such and so." Just keep doing what you're doing... and stay safe. You're firm and you're not letting him walk all over you.. and that's wonderful... well done sir.
