Coiled chain falling off the edge of a table

A long chain is coiled up at the edge of a table, with a length x hanging down vertically. It is released from rest at time t = 0. In this video we use Newton's second law to find v(x), where v is the velocity of the chain. There are some complications to deal with, for example the variable mass of the moving chain, and energy losses due to inelastic collisions between the links as they're set in motion.

Nicely done. Note this reminds of YT vids watching anchors on aircraft carriers being released. Very exciting vids (although not as exciting as yours ;), the noise and vibration as the heavy huge chain unravels.

Thanks! A nice real-world demonstration of the energy losses involved. I suppose you could make a more realistic model for the anchor case by attaching a heavy particle to the end and including quadratic drag. I'll give that a try at some point. And yes, of course things are always more exciting in equation form!

Good idea, I've been putting all of them into one big classical mechanics playlist but it's probably worth being more specific now that there are 50+ in the list! There's probably just one more chain problem coming for the time being, but I'll surely be adding more in the future.
