My boyfriend is from Coimbra. I am portuguese too but live in France. Never had the chance to visit the city, only a few places when I was at school. But now I can do it every 2 or 3 months and I just love it! It has so much to see and visit! Unfortunately, people see it only as a college or hospital. They don't see the potential of this amazing city. Coimbra has been forgotten for the portuguese people. Anyway, thanks for this amazing video.

Olá Patricia! 😀 Thank you so much for your comment! I agree with what you wrote, especially the last bit, that many Portuguese people only think of Coimbra as university city. That's why for my first video in the city I didn't want to do the cliché thing and film the university. Coimbra is so much more than that, Portugal wouldn't be Portugal without Coimbra 😊

I went to Coimbra in March 2020. I stayed in the Hotel Astoria too. It is absolutely beautiful! I loved the old gate elevator, and the breakfasts were wonderful! You followed the exact path that I took thru the old city. I walked everywhere too, and, oh, how exhausted I was! 😅 All those hilly streets, especially going to the university. I experienced an amazing and beautiful Fado performance there too, and I heard monks singing so beautifully in one of the churches. Coimbra is absolutely magical! I'm sooo envious of you! 😊❤️

I walked so much when I filmed this video, downtown, uptown, university, you name it... I even walked around the entire perimeter of old town, to end up near the penitentiary, on the other side of the city. 😅 Monks singing, that must have been amazing!

Miguel. Só consegui terminar de ver o vídeo hoje. Vou ter que assisti-lo muitas vezes pra absorver tanta história. Mas te digo que vc me derrubou no final com aquelas palavras do Papa Alexandre III. Foi extremamente emocionante. Tenho certeza que Coimbra terá outros vídeos. Porque a gente sabe a História, mas vc não só nos conta a história vc nos mostra a história e isso é muito significativo. Ya no se como explicar el asombro ,la maravilla de estos lugares. Nunca pensé que Coimbra tenia esos tesoros escondidos. Y como todas esas preciosísimas ciudades antiguas portuguesas con calles intrincadas, pintorescas me dejan con la boca bierta,y no digo nada de las iglesias porque se me acabaron las palabras. Bellísimo video!!! Y muy bueno el relato histórico, porque a veces vemos lugares pero no entendemos si no sabemos su historia. Muchas gracias!!!! Los seguiré !!!

Já visitei Coimbra duas lindas vezes. A cidade, sua história, suas riquezas culturais, sua arquitetura, a área universitária e tanto mais deixa gente de fora como eu com lembranças vividas e permanentes, e a vontade de voltar outra vez.

Bem, eu esperava continuar o passeio por Évora, mas a surpresa foi agradabilíssima! Eu gosto muito de Coimbra! E eu fiquei sabendo, há anos, que a Capital não era, formalmente, Lisboa, mas não me lembrava de que era Coimbra. As informações que você nos passou são muito interessantes. Como um adolescente, ou pré-adolescente, conseguiu tal proeza? Ele deveria ter uma força de caráter muito grande, para arrebanhar seguidores e conseguir unificar o Reino de Portugal! Desta vez optei por não colocar 2 vídeos seguidos da mesma cidade, noto que algumas pessoas acham meio aborrecido e sem interesse. Possivelmente Évora voltará não no próximo domingo, mas sim no seguinte. 😊 Afonso Henriques era uma força da natureza, não só foi muito precoce em termos de maturidade física e mental, como teve uma vida muita longa, algo bastante raro naqueles tempos de doenças e guerras. Sim, tenho mesmo muito orgulho, mas na história mais antiga. Por exemplo, a história dos últimos 100 anos não acho interessante nem tem motivos de orgulho. Demasiada política que, por um motivo ou outro, correu mal e poucos feitos gloriosos. 😄 Uma excelente semana! 😊

Basicamente pq houve uma rebelião de nobres que o apoiaram . Geralmente se fantasiam muito nesses mitos fundadores de nações.

@@thealexprime Haviam nobres que queriam que o Condado Portucalense continuasse sob o domínio e submissão do Reino de Leão, e outros que queriam independência total e a criação do Reino de Portugal, esse foi o grande motivo. :) Da mesma forma que atualmente Catalunha e País Basco desejam ser independentes de Espanha.

@@thealexprime Não foi fonso Henriques, foi o neto dele, Afonso II (filho de Sancho I, que tem o túmulo em frente a Afonso Henriques). E sim, ele teve mesmo lepra... 😕

Bom dia a todos, este "olá" vem de Coimbra! Obrigado ao canal POV TOURS por ter vindo visitar o lugar onde eu vivo. Neste vídeo podem ver alguns estudantes com roupas "estranhas", muito coloridas e como se fosse carnaval. Isso é por causa de eventos do calendário académico. Talvez a filmagem tenha sido feita durante "Latada" ou "Queima", que são os principais festivais. Outros estudantes usam roupas escuras e capas longas sobre as costas. Esses são mais velhos e orientam os estudantes mais novos. Um dos pontos fortes de Coimbra - não só a cidade mas toda a região - é a qualidade da comida. Na região centro os alimentos são de boa qualidade e o preço é acessível. Para além disso em Coimbra existe o maior centro hospitalar do país, e muitissimos locais dedicados à saúde do corpo e da mente. Isso faz com que muitas pessoas se mudem de outras partes do país para esta região, inclusive foi o que aconteceu comigo. (Vivia em Lisboa, bonito mas muito stressante!) Para quem desejar viver de forma longa, saudável e bela, eu penso que é o melhor lugar para morar. Tudo de bom para vocês!

Boa Noite Miguel. Fantastic look at the history of Portugal. Some of it I knew (I had heard that Lisboa was never made the official capital). Those churches are so beautiful! The tomb, of King Afonso Henriques and the script... it made me feel sad for the Portuguese people, when I think of what happened in 1910... I suppose there were plenty of people who were happy to see the end of the Monarchy... and maybe it wasn't what it had promised to be... but what was written was very poignant. Obrigada Miguel! See you next week. (We lost power here for 54 hours so I couldn't watch any sooner... this was the first thing I wanted to see once the lights came on!) 😉😊

Olá Jen, boa noite! 😀 Well, 20th century Portuguese history is a muddled mess. I don't even know if keeping the Monarchy would have helped or not, probably not in the long run, looking at the claimants to the throne that we have had since then... especially the current one. On the other hand, it would have avoided the mid-20th century dictatorship and the insane few years that followed it, which would have been great. 54 hours without power?! 😮 What caused it, a fire or something?

The video I'll eventuall film in Guimarães will be special too, but it won't top this one.

To me, it's far more interesting and exciting to do this kind of research than to read a good novel. Next week's video will not be in Coimbra, but I'll showcase one of Portugal's greatest monuments (it's in the top 3, for sure).

Ah, you know me too well already! 😄 Coimbra and that church in particular were on my list for a long time now, just had to wait for the perfect day. I've never been inside the São Francisco convent, I wonder if they changed it a lot and no longer looks like a religious building...

@@POVTours I don't know about Portugal, but in Norwich, England, where they have a lot of medieval churches, a couple of them have been converted to use for other purposes. One is used as a concert hall for mainly classical music, and another is an arts centre, which is really mainly a concert hall, too, for various kinds of music.

Maravilhoso! Coimbra é perfeita… a perfeição em forma de cidade histórica, com uma aura mítica impressionante! E a tua forma de mostrar os vídeos, privilegiando as imagens ao invés de falatórios ( tem alguns vídeos por aqui no KZfaq que eu simplesmente corto o som para evitar ouvir verborragia inútil e só vejo as imagens pois os caras querem aparecer mais que os locais… ) …com as legendas explicativas muito interessantes, bem, para mim este modelo de apresentação ficou perfeito. Já vi diversos vídeos seus e gostei de todos. Mas os de Coimbra, os de Sintra, os de Évora, o do mosteiro dos Jerónimos em Lisboa, o da Batalha e os de Tomar foram os que mais gostei até agora. Já vi os dois de Coimbra e inclusive os revi hoje(os de Sintra também) e pretendo rever os demais que mais gostei. Espero que você poste ainda outros de Coimbra e Sintra… mostrando inclusive o palácio da Pena, ausente nos 3 que vc postou de Sintra até agora. 🙏🌟❤️💙🌟

WOW! Such rich history. You should be so proud. I have been to Coimbra once and had NO idea of what happened there so many years ago. I visited the university library, that was all. So much left out doing a tour. Please continue telling us more! I'm specially interested in Portuguese history. I'm also proud of being a daughter of Azorean parents and getting to know all the great Portuguese heroes. Thank you Miguel, you're the best!

Hey Marta, thank you so much for your lovely comment! 😊 Ah, you did what almost every tourist does in Coimbra: going to the university library. There's nothing wrong with the library, it's stunning and should definitively be visited, but most tourists on organized tours/day trips are missing out on 95% of what Coimbra has to offer. It's almost a scam, in my humble opinion. This Sunday the new video will be about 2 of the greatest heroes in the history of Portugal (2 centuries after Afonso Henriques), as well as a very special monument. 😊 I'll film a few videos in Azores as well in the future, just not sure when. What island(s) are your parents from?

@@POVTours From Sao Miguel. They immigrated to Rio, where I was born. My family then moved to Canada in 1967 and to Mass. In 1969. There a lot Azoreans in New England.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😀 Coimbra is not as well known as Lisbon or Porto, but when it comes to history it holds its own against those two bigger cities. I'm afraid that your list of places to visit in September / October might end up being a bit too long. Early this year I decided that 2022 would be the year when I'd film all the major historical places in Portugal, I can tell you in advance there's a ton of cities on that list... 😅

Ola Miguel, another excellento video. We have visited Coimbra on two occasions and found it to be a fascinating city with its own unique vibe. I think I also prefer Coimbra's version of the Fado. This was very informative and yes surprised that Coimbra is legally the capital of Portugal.😊❤

L art gothique a donné aussi en langue française l argot c est à dire une méthode d expression qui permet de s exprimer sans que entourage comprenne ce que vous dites ! Il doit y avoir de l argot portugais ! Oui l art gothique est très important dans le Vieux Continent Européen ! C est une joie de le voir aussi au Portugal ! Olá Miguel um bom vídeo como sempre duma cidade que é uma pérola! Na história de Portugal, por instantes pensei que o Miguel? Não ia entrar no mosteiro de Coimbrã!? Que é uma grande obra de arte gostei bastante também da lição de história que o Miguel, sempre conta parabéns e obrigado! Eu sou natural de Aveiro, eu sei que há uma pequena rivalidade entre estás duas cidades? Mas é uma rivalidade saudável que beneficia o país sem ela talvez o país fosse mais pobre! Thank you, really enjoyed the video and the history you relate. I was surprised that even though you passed by the Santa Clara convent-new, and mentioned Saint Queen Isabel, you didn’t go to see her tomb. Isn’t she the patron Saint of Portugal? A queen Saint, is not common anywhere.

Assim como em Alcochetes, observei q você começa o passeio as 16h, você acha q é o melhor horário para começar o passeio nessas cidades? Tô perguntando isso porque será a primeira vez, sozinha, q irei visitar Portugal...vi q em alguns pontos específicos é melhor visitar no fim de tarde, pôr do sol...além de relaxante é ótimo para uma foto de recordação, 😉

Olá Marc! 😊 Em relação ao horário, da parte da tarde as cidades mais turísticas (exceto Lisboa) costumam ser mais calmas, pois os turistas que chegaram de manhã em viagens organizadas regressam ao local de partida (normalmente Lisboa) a meio da tarde. Coimbra de manhã tem sempre mais pessoas do que de tarde. E sim, nalguns locais o pôr do sol é imperdível! 😊 Uma exceção é no bairro do Parque das Nações, em Lisboa, aí imperdível é o nascer do sol.

What strikes me about the cities of Portugal is that the residents do not grow pot plants. The buildings are all sullen and bare with no pretty flowers on balconies or out of windows in plant boxes.

You'll see some pot plants, but mostly in the quieter residential areas/neighborhoods, areas I usually don't film. Having said that, it's true that a few more plants wouldn't hurt 😊

Captivating introduction to the early history of Portugal! Also, thought provoking. What motivated Afonso Henriques' soldiers to fight so valiantly against the Muslim warriors, of whom there were individuals known to love death more than life? What motivated the Christian soldiers and knights to wage war against the Islamic states for seven centuries until the complete liberation of the Iberian Peninsula was achieved? I have my ideas in this respect but this is not the place to discuss them. Moreover, this video suggested to me several other lines of thought. Obrigado, Miguel! I note with great pleasure that the very old European universities such as Bologna, Padua, Coimbra, have improved their global rankings over the years. I have also been happy to learn that Mr. Costa, the current PM of Portugal, is working towards improving further the education system of his country which might translate into a significant increase in the competitivity of Portugal in Europe and the world. Once again, thank you Miguel!

In those times, the Christian armies were as religiously motivated as the Muslim/Moorish ones. Both would happily die in battle if needs be, as both believed they had a divine mission to do, in my humble opinion. I sure hope the education system in Portugal improves, it's one of our achilles heel... Thank you Daniel! 😊
