Good eye! The glasses were actually about 40cm (roughly 16 inches) apart from each other, so cross-contamination could definitely have happened.

Could have done, though I imagine the presence of sugar in the original allowed one type of mould to form whilst a different mould which doesn't need sugar to grow started on the zero.

mold doesn't do well with a high concentration of sugar. That's why sugary things hold so well.

The size of the initial mould colony is going to be high variance, as it came from the cup and/or the ice cubes. What section of the freezer the ice cubes were in, or how far to the back of the cupboard the cup came from will make a big difference in how large the initial mould growth is.

sweet stuff usually doesnt mold. chocolate from first ww can still be eaten if the packaging holds up. sure its not the same but it is clearly the difference here

Also possibly different species of mold or different amounts of multiple mold species, based on the preference to the specific chemical environment.

yes, without moisture the mold cannot defend itself and will be oxidized into oblivion by the sun and the air. but the mold changes color before that: spore release - those spores are often resistant to dessication, and can sit dormant for years, until they land in another glass of pop or other suitable substrate. some molds actively disperse them in the air. the green stuff on the left is clearly mold spores which spread in the air. some mold can just break off fibers that float around without specialized sexual spores. some molds form dessication resistant masses called sclerotia too.

Depends on the species of mold I'd say. I've seen mold growing on window sills and the like. But I guess that can be an area where moisture would condense anyway.

@spooderderg4077 Yes, I know. What I meant by that was, I don't think adding food grade clean ice cubes introduced any additional bacteria to the coke that wasn't anyways present in my studio where I film dozens of these at the same time.

Esp. from one like you who have the appearance of someone who would deliver premium quality. after all you do already deliver quality..

@@MalhaIIa yes, I absolutely get what you mean. I could increase the quality of these time lapses by filming them in a sterile environment. I'm working on creating a better place for me to film, right now I'm limited by space, and you know I have to film multiple projects to he able to keep up the weekly uploads. What I meant by the clean I cubes was, they were ice cubes I made at home in my clean freezer by using clean tap water. I could use them in my drinks without any problem. So when I used those ice cubes in the coke, or not wiping the top of the can made very little difference when it comes to contamination, because there are a dozen other projects being filmed just a few feets away, and they are dirty rotting moldy stuff. I'm not complaining, there are many other niches that are much harder to film/create, but time lapses also have their difficulties. For me it's space limitation. Soon I will be able to start filming at a new place with more space. I like the idea of a sterile room for special time lapses, hopefully I can start uploading such videos too soon enough. Yeah. At first I though it might be the caramel that supports growth too, but it might just contain caramel coloring (which is different than real caramel). But some molds can me vicious little bastards and can break down a lot of chemicals for nutrition. It would only be molds growing in it, because the pH is too low to support bacteria.

there will be. that sludge left in the glass at the end is the corn syrup. sort of gives a good visual representation as to why it's terrible to consume and many countries have just made it illegal.

Mold spores exist floating in the air as well, so it'd probably be very similar regardless.

If we want to see the best result, lab conditions must be prepared but it is a hassle if you’re not a researcher

One cool thing about Coke Zero is that it's not sticky at all. You could spill it and it's like cleaning up colored water.

I also wonder how mould grew on it as there is no sugar.. But then also you can get mould in bathrooms or black mould near windows so that then makes me wonder what the food source is to feed these??

It contains Caramel, Phosphoric Acid, Aspartame, Acesulfame-K, Natural Flavourings and Sodium Citrates … so there is some stuff for molds to eat.

I cleaned them, because that mold that you can see being stuck to the glass came off pretty easily. It didn't smell bad either, so I thought why not clean them. But yes, usually if a glass gets too disgustingly dirty then I just throw it away. Egg in glass video for example, or the strawberry milkshake one

@@tornado100able Not OP, but that should be a non issue. If you have a moldy glass, yes, you should probably intensively clean it, at best with more than 60°C best would be cooking it (so 100+°C) But glass is one of the few materials that are REALLY good at being cleanable, one of the reasons why we use it in the first place. Example: Most of the glassware used in chemistry is made of very similar glass to your regular household glass. There is stuff that does not go well with this in chemistry, but most acids and the like can be handled in your regular old water glass :)

@@ArDeeMee I don't use extra sugar at all, can't stand this sugar syrup any longer, way too sweet for me. Once you refrain from extra sugar, you'll notice every mg of it in foods. Good, you're only consuming it once per week, there was a time I'd drink up to 2l per day of this syrup, stopped drinking it also like 15 years ago like the commenter, wished I had refrained from it earlier.
