A reworking of Leonard Cohen's classic song by the same name, Karsh's version is about the pain and glory of love. For this version, he enlists guitarist Warren Mendonsa's songwriting skills and incorporates the instrumental portion of Warren's 'Ode to a Sunny Day' which seemed to thematically match the mood of 'Halleluiah'.
Shilpa Rao comes in on the Hindusthani bits with echoes of 'Jhoola', a song she grew up on. The beautiful song is marked by an epic guitar solo by Warren.

Lyrics:
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah !
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah !
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
jhoole mora saiyan lun main balaiya
jhoole mora saiyan lun main balaiya..
dar mohe laage jiya mora larje
dar mohe laage jiya mora larje
haule haule jhoolna jhoolave more saiyan.. re amaraiya
This is the world that I live in
These are the hands that I've been given
These are the sounds of forgiving
This is the place that I've been sitting
This is the rain I'm standing under
All the lightning and the thunder
These are the lives that are blown assunder
but I remain in wonder
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Jhoola, jhoola
Jhoola, jhoola
This is the world that I live in
These are the hands that I've been given
These are the sounds of forgiving
This is the place that I've been sitting
This is the rain I'm standing under
All the lightning and the thunder !
Meaning:
The Song is a marriage of two different thought streams, both of which are expressions of love and helplessness that one experiences through the journey of life.
The Song starts with the lines from the famous Poem "Hallelujah", written by Leonard Cohen. Originally the poem deals with the dilemma every seeking soul goes through, the dilemma of choices and sacrifices. As, on one hand there is a true calling of every soul ; that is the love of the unknown, while on the other hand there is this enchanting and mesmerizing earthly love. Thus the dilemma! While the soul wants to be free and be ONE with its light source; the strong bonds of life and earthly love, make it tough for seeker to break free.
The poet binds the original poem with intermittent rows of thoughts that innocently wrap up the feelings of a heart madly in love; enjoying its bliss...hoping that the beautiful journey of love never ends, but at the same time scared of its end.
Towards the end The Poet states the fact that, living on earth has its purpose and that is the purpose he is fulfilling. He faces all the challenges that come with being a human and yet hopes for redemption...and the love of The Almighty.

Diffrent scales. But it sounds off because she's not singing the same notes as the western major scale. So it is off key.

@@neobeinghuman you're tone deaf. But lemme make it simple so that you're law intellect can understand. 1. This song is sung on the western major scale of D. Both hallelujah and Ode to a sunny don't have any notes that are outside the major scale, which is surprising cause there are no 'blue notes' in the instrumental section despite it being a bleusey song, by a band named blackstrat blues. 2. The Indian scales do not follow the western major scale, they have notes that are "outside the confines of the major scale" and that dissonance is the notes she's singing. With that being said, she is on key, but some parts especially when she first starts does sound off with the chord changes because, she's not singing the notes in the major scale. But that dissonance is what gives the song it's quality. I'm not here dissing this wonderful peice, I'm just making an observation as a music lover, musician and producer.

Through my toughest days, last phase of my PhD, I rediscovered Leonard Cohen and kept on listening to his poetries and found solace. I think he saved my life. I believe Cohen is immortalised by Karsh, Shilpa's Desh and Warren's ode to a sunny day... I think i listened to this version when i was a undergrad student... I aged, the song didn't and never will.

I love many other versions of Hallelujah composed by Leonard Cohen, to me the best one is sung by Rufus Wainwright. This composition is just another interpretation of the song. Warren's beautiful guitar and Prasanna ji's soulful bansuri took it to a different level, love this rendition.

The world has enough K.D, Jeff and Rufus covers and after a while one gets jaded. But tailoring a set of words to another brilliant instrumental ( Ode to...) and weaving an absolutely beautiful melody overlaid with a subtle hint of the old pentatonics, now that is music. To all who wish this was a derivative cover of the others, better an original blunder than a borrowed fix. ( Not implied in any way that this cover was a blunder)

Epic! One of the best versions of this song around... seamless travel between two songs, never seemed two different ... and Shilpas Jhoola is abs fine, its just that we are so used to traditional 135 harmonies that it might throw you off when coming from hallelujah to Jhoolah , but its abs fine and that's why its good composition :-).. this episode is so good to hear after the utterly let down one from EL. ... .
