people really thought he was taking a shot at Harry? it was so obvious he was talking about the industry it’s so ridiculous he had to apologize
@icebabe2257
@icebabe2257 2 жыл бұрын
He was taking a shot at him, and that's why he apologized. Obviously his main point was how homophobic the industry was to take so long to put a man on the cover, but he had no reason to being harry into it. He not only assumed Harry's sexuality(thinking they gave the cover to harry bc he's gay, which harry doesn't label his sexuality so how would he even know) but made it seem like harry had got it unfairly. Billy I think thought it was handed to harry as if harry wears dresses regularly, when harry has slowly but surely been making fashion statements over the years, and decided to wear a dress for the cover being the first man for vogue. So it's not what ppl thought he was talking about, he had in fact brought harry up bc he wanted to be the first man on vogue, and thought he deserved it bc he was wearing dresses longer, as if that was the reason it was given to harry. He was wrong, and it's good that he apologized. You can fight to be heard without bringing up someone who has nothing to do with the fight.
@Geoffrey454
@Geoffrey454 2 жыл бұрын
@@icebabe2257 he didn't apologise for what he said, he apologised for inadvertently creating an environment in which a cis white man again was centred, which always detracts from the ACTUAL conversation. Billy Porter has not just been "wearing dresses" for longer. This isn't a superficial fashion statement conversation, it's about systems of intersectional oppression which Billy Porter has been fighting for decades, but a cis white man comes along and all the attention turns to him. I like Harry but Billy wasn't wrong at all in commenting on the decision.

I’m seeing comments about something that he had EVERY right to say what he said. And not have to apologize. The issue is not HARRY, the issue is that when the culture is presented by a POC (more importantly a black individual) it is either a.Rarely seen or b. not enough to be presented. The AMOUNT of queer androgynous POC should have been represented and THAT was what should have been on cover. It’s no disrespect to Harry but there are plenty of individuals that should have been on that cover before vogue and let’s face it, Vogue, along with other high magazines, rarely have representation of color.

I like Billy Porter and he shouldn't have apologized for anything involving Harry Styles. Because honestly that's how he felt when he saw the VOGUE cover and he wasn't the one on it knowing his fashion influence/sexuality. His original statement and reaction were the most genuine and not this half ass politically correct retraction. Now, taking all the credit for non-binary fashion was more of his ego talking due to the fact that other male celebrities have come before him. "BUT AGAIN, IT'S DEEPER THAN YOU" ....he was very correct to say this. There's no hate towards Harry Styles but they could have picked someone else if not Billy Porter for the cause ("a vocal, politically invested openly LGBT individuals").

@@bettersecret1499 He seems like a delightful man though. I can stand that kind of happy ego infinitely better than the ego of say, a Donald Trump. But yeah, on one hand you could say it is not a big deal, historically. I mean, Louis XIV conquered much of the Low Countries sporting lacquered red high heels and lavish robes and dresses before finally being successfully countered and ousted by William III of Orange - of whom it was a public secret that he was a gay man. But this is not a repeat of history, it hardly even rhymes. High heels and dresses weren't necessarily associated with just men or women per se. Hell, make-up was initially invented for men, and women who wore it were frowned upon initially. But all these things were free of modern day biases and associations. And sadly a lot of things still need to be de-coupled as being either feminine or masculine. More importantly still, femininity needs to be de-coupled from associations like being weak, passive or demure.

What is this non-apology? Billy Porter is a cis-man who claimed to have invented non-binary fashion, he got backlash because of that, and is now backtracking his statements because he realized he messed up. If he wanted to have a conversation about poc representation in media, there was no reason to mention one of the biggest celebrities in the world as the only point of contention. The statements were made to provoke and sell his memoir, nothing more, nothing less. He doesn’t have to apologize to Harry Styles for “having his name in his mouth” he needs to apologize for labeling as straight when Harry explicitly said he didn’t use labels and claiming Harry didn’t care about what he was doing in terms of fashion… Harry has been wearing GNC clothes since before Billy Porter showed up in an ugly dress on a red carpet for the first time. He’s been experimenting with makeup and nail polish long before Billy Porter popped up “inventing non-binary fashion”… Harry correctly identified who he was inspired by (Prince, Bowie, Freddy Mercury). He never mentioned Billy Porter because Billy Porter was not his inspiration. Next time his PR team should do some research before throwing him to the wolves for a drop of relevancy

Billy Porter is who Harry Styles stans thing Harry Styles is
@coolstorykals
@coolstorykals 2 жыл бұрын
But isn’t it a good thing that gender norms are being altered and gender fluid clothing is being more normalized? There would be no conversation if boundaries weren’t being pushed. Harry did the right thing and he was the perfect person to do this. Harry didn’t do it for the spotlight or to be seen a certain way, he doesn’t label himself and he wears gender fluid clothing often. And if it gets people to listen, let him do it, let tons of men do it. More people from vastly different backgrounds must partake, that’s how change happens. Saying only certain people can partake in wearing dresses is part of the problem, we should be thrilled that more people are normalizing this idea.

You missed the ENTIRE point of what Billy was saying. Read his original statement over again
@TothanCrawk
@TothanCrawk 2 жыл бұрын
@@maddi8760 the point was he wanted straight white men to feel they have to right being non-binary, and getting called out for that is the only reason he apologized in the first place. The man clearly has a lot of bitterness that he has limited range in his acting and his a typecasted novelty.
@maddi8760

@@TothanCrawk harry is not non-binary, he is a straight white cis man who was spotlighted for that reason when men of color have been doing this for decades.
@maddi8760
@maddi8760 2 жыл бұрын
He called harry out for dressing fluidly as a fad and that’s unfair for him to have made history on the cover of vogue when that was a moment that belong to men of color who were doing it long before him. You’re blind to the part that race plays in this because you’re one of those “I don’t see color, all lives matter” dummies
@coolstorykals
@coolstorykals 2 жыл бұрын
@@maddi8760 Billy Porter is known for dressing extravagant and he does a fabulous job, nobody is taking that away from him. But I do believe that everyone can be allowed a seat at the table. Billy isn’t the first to dress this way either, so we should honor everyone that have dressed that way before him, as well. I think we should give everyone a chance that wants to dress a certain way.
