It's such a buzz watching people around the world discovering some of the extraordinary bands we here in Australia grew up with just enjoying as a part of our musical landscape and thinking no more deeply about it. We loved them but with a closeness of those we know well. I sometimes envy those who are blown away with their first experience, but I'm often so happy I've known them all my life. But, thank you to reactors like yourself, Rory for allowing me a new way to smile at music we here in Australia are all very proud of. L

Hi Rory. Welcome to Oz Music. This is still played on the radio here, all these years later. Being isolated, Australia has a brilliant home grown music history. The first singer/guitarist is Ian Moss, the second singer is Jimmy Barnes (he is the main singer of the band). But note everyone in the band song harmonies. Oh, and the harmonica player! He is not part of the band, but boy does he go off!! And yes, that driving bass. Glad someone got you to listen to them. They had a great song called You Got Nothing I Want. It's about them going to the US and the record label execs telling them ok, yes, but you need to dress this way, you need to do this sort of music. They basically told them to piss off and came back to Australia!

Welcome to Cold Chisell, a very deep rabbit hole. The guitarist and 2nd lead singer has his own career and is well respected in the music industry across many genres as a guitarist and as a vocalist. The lead singer , Jimmy Barnes , was Australia’s biggest act, and is still performing full voice to packed houses...... has his own bottomless rabbit hole. Try his duet with Tina Turner..... Simply The Best. Then his live in the studio Stone Cold with guitar legend Joe Bonamassa. Then his bluesy soul duet with John Farnham..... When Something is Wrong With My Baby. Farnham is another rabbit hole. Those who don’t believe Barnsey is Australia’s greatest ever singer believe Farnham is the best singer ever.....worldwide.

Most of Chisel songs are explosive… Ian Moss- guitarist & vocalist Jimmy Barnes- vocalist Don Walker- piano & songwriter David Bliath- Harmonica Phil Small- bass Steve Prestwich- drums Chisel was invented when the members were 16+…most of them had a common thread of poverty, hunger, abuse and neglect.. some exposed to domestic violence and abandonment… mostly Jimmy… adversity bought them together and the need to belong saved them… they survived the small halls, bikie taverns, rough outback conditions. They became the ultimate pub band and many of their songs are in our DNA. Don Walker was a brilliant lyricist who highlighted Australian society and issues . They spoke to the people, for the people… and still we blare their music out of our subwoofers with windows down and wail away!!!! CLASSIC COLD CHISEL music is raw, bluesy and seexplosive. I’m so grateful to have lined up for hours to get in to smoke filled taverns, pubs, outdoor venues and pubs…you certainly get your monies worth.

Cold Chisel are legendary on Australia. Every member of the band can sing, every member has written hit songs. This one was actually written by the guitarist Ian Moss which is why he gets the lead on this song. He takes the lead on quite a few of their songs. He was actually the original lead singer of the band until Jimmy, the second one to sing, joined the band and became the regular lead. Their voices just go together so well. Ian smooth tones irons out the rough edges of Jimmy's voice. You'll love their performance of Wild Thing from the Last Stand Concert .

I've got one that will kick the shit out of you. You know "Lose Yourself', Eminem, a giant song from a giant performer. A tiny Australian country singer, Kasey Chambers, has hijacked that song. It's her song now. First, know the words, that's important, the lyrics are huge. Relax yourself for a gentle banjo, then listen in wonder as she changes the song, it's no longer country...... A few minutes in, strap yourself in, I mean, brace yourself.....just hold on. Rocket time! Is it bigger than this song, "Bow River"? Maybe........

@@cjjoe2385 you, sir, are 100% correct. I hope you got the 'live at Newcastle" version. It deserves to be the biggest song in the world this year. Funny thing is; yes, "Bow River" deceives to begin, but NOTHING deceives as much as "Lose Yourself" with Kasey Chambers! If you want a list of Australian artists as good as this, but you've never heard of them, let me know. A few to begin. The world's first heavy music, blowing ear drums from around 1963, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs "Mama Live At GTK" is probs the best live version. I mean, 1960's, seriously? You also probs should know this. If musos aren't good live in Aus, they're not gunna get recorded. They spend years in bloodbath pubs to get this good. Now turn 180 degrees, the tall blonde goddess, Delta Goodrem, singing with the tiny blind Aboriginal, Gurrumul live on The Voice Australia, singing "Bayini" in his language. Tissue required. Back to live rock, try Baby Animals with the oh so attractive Suzie De Marchi out front singing "Backbone" live. Let me know.

I am a Cold Chisel fan. Here is a (relatively) brief synopsis: Cold Chisel were/are one of Australia’s greatest rock n’ roll bands. Their energetic live performances captivated audiences across Australia, as did numerous songs that are now burned into the hearts of many Australians. Contemporaries of AC/DC, and a product of the same tough pub rock scene, “Chisel” formed in Adelaide in 1973, moved to Sydney in 1976, released their first album in 1978, and had disbanded by the end of 1983. The most famous lineup of the band included Jimmy Barnes (lead singer), Ian Moss (lead guitar & vocals), Don Walker (keyboards & main songwriter), Phil Small (bass) & Steve Prestwich (drums). With many guest appearances by David Blight on harmonica, and a few others. After their breakup, Jimmy Barnes began an extremely successful solo career which continues to this day. Despite breaking up in 1983, Cold Chisel have enjoyed reforming for studio albums (and tours) in 1998, 2012, 2015, 2019, and there have been numerous other releases. Sadly, drummer Steve Prestwich passed away in 2011. He was replaced by Charley Drayton. There is much more to say about Cold Chisel’s songs, their performances, the members of the band, their missed opportunities for overseas recognition etc., but I will leave that for others.

This band played my school social (formal) in Adelaide, South Australia 🇦🇺 back in the 70s. A year or so later they didn’t need to play school socials. Band lineup…….. Ian Moss (Guitar/Vocals), Jimmy Barnes (Vocals), Phil Small (Bass), Steve Prestwich (drums/percussion), Don Walker (Keyboards), David Blight(harmonica)……. Songs were written by Ian Moss, Don Walker, Jimmy Barnes and (the late) Steve Prestwich……. Super talented band !!!

Cold Chisel were contrasing hard and soft vocals 40 years before screamo and metalcore tried it. Every musician in Cold Chisel has written amazing songs but Don Walker, the piano player, may be one of the greatest song writers ever.

You know what mate, you give a bloody honest take. Kudos to you... though I am disappointed with your lack of appreciation for one of the world's greatest, unrecognised blues harmonica exponents! Gotta check out some more Aussie rock my friend.

Aussie pub rock, play and sing so well, the drunks don't run you out. These guys are the best. After the US record execs messed them around, they came home and Jimmy Barnes, Barnsey wrote, You got Nothin' I Want. Listen to Saturday night for Ian Moss, Mossy. Later on try Barnsey and Farnsey, John Farnham, doing a bluesy Sam and Dave song, When Something is Wrong With my Baby. The best one is on a well loved tv show, called Hey, Hey, It's Saturday, but they may block you, the official clip is good, the guitarist is Diesel, Barnsey's Bro-in-Law. Recently Barnsey put out a 30 year anniversary album called Soul Deep, with among the extra's, Soothe Me, with Sam Moore from Sam and Dave, In his 90's still got it.

Just saw a sneak preview to Farnsey's movie on KZfaq, John Farnham: Finding the Voice, out on May 18, in the cinemas. Barnsey does a bit of recollecting of John Farnham in it. They were fantastic together.. Hahaha.... I still remember John Farnham singing 'Sadie', the cleaning lady 😂😂😂 he's come a long way since then, he was Johnny Farnham back then, too!!! Oh god, I'm really showing my age now😂😂👍❤️🇭🇲🇭🇲

This band have been together since they were young kids (teens). They originated in South Australia and moved to Sydney early on. They’ve done the hard yards and the most respected musicians in Australia. They still play decades later and draw HUGE crowds. Live there is NOTHING to compare. They are FIRED
