This is number 24 on your Top 100 list. I read this book many years ago shortly after it was published. After seeing your review I think I should read it again. Great review, Brian!

Dang I started reading the book last Friday. So far I am really enjoying this book. As a history nerd that is in love with the civil war and the fact that I am born in North Carolina, I am loving this book so far.

I read the book last year and really enjoyed it. I watched the movie in the theater 20 yrs ago and absolutely loved it. Seeing your review makes me want to re-read the book and then revisit the film.

I read this book years ago. Very depressing, but also very good. I think I saw the movie too, but the book left a much bigger impression …

Five star book and movie. Both were moving and captivating. I actually liked the movie a bit better. The acting was superb.

I've heard this book is a retelling of Homer's Odyssey? Is that accurate?

Bernard Cornwell wrote the Starbuck Chronicles 4 books about the Civil War.

The problem with the movie is that I wasn't convinced of the love between Inman and Ada. There just wasn't enough interaction. Maybe they liked each other, a little, not love. And certainly not to the level that she would write to him and he would journey home just to be with her. Frankly I thought Inman should have stayed with Sara, the Portman character. But the film did have other strengths such as depicting the chaos of the civil war South, the evil of the bandit guys, the struggle for survival, etc. Good movie but the central plot device is weak. No doubt the book does a better job of it.

Yeah it never gets old. We do not read everything he reviews but we do watch all of his reviews. Brian is a comedian, an artist, and a very good writer...
