Looking for a soap recipe that's gentle on the skin for your baby or toddler? This cold process soap is nourishing, palm oil free, and perfect for little ones.
It's not tear free, so keep out of baby's eyes!
Click below to print the recipe:
heartscontentfarmhouse.com/co...
Ingredients and tools you'll need:
-stick blender (I like cuisinart ones: amzn.to/2HhZDNx)
-digital scale (this is the kind I use: amzn.to/38pWVBl)
-safety gear
-a 10 inch mold (here's mine: amzn.to/2SGtPab)
-3 ounces sweet almond oil
-8 ounces coconut oil
-14 ounces olive oil
-4 ounces shea butter
-1 ounce beeswax (pellets like these are easiest to measure: amzn.to/37kfoy0)
-4.10 ounces lye
-8 to 11 ounces of water
-2 tablespoons lavender essential oil or fragrance oil (optional. this one has a great fragrance: amzn.to/2Hl6SUE)
I like Brambleberry.com for the oils and lye.
Instructions:
1. Measure out the lye and water into two separate containers, using a digital scale. Add the lye to the water (not the other way around) and stir until it’s fully dissolved. It will get hot. Set it aside to cool in a safe place.
2. Measure out the oils and butters in separate containers. (Or at least measure the solid oils in one container, and the liquid oils in another.) Melt the solid oils, then add them to the liquid oils and melt on the stovetop on low until 140 degrees. Set aside to cool.
3. When the lye and the oils have both cooled down to about 110 degrees, it’s time to make the soap. Prepare your mold and any fragrance you are using. Pour the lye water into the melted oil and blend with a stick blender. Blend until the soap reaches “trace”, meaning that it has turned into a slightly thickened batter. There should be no visible oil droplets, and. if. you lift up your stick blender, the soap that comes off of it will rest on top of the soap instead of just sinking in. If you are adding fragrance, measure it out and stir by hand.
4. Immediately pour the finished soap into the mold. Cover with an old towel to insulate. it so it heats up evenly. After 24 hours, turn out and cut into bars. Allow. to cure for 2-3 weeks before using. Store in a dry, cool place.
notes
Be sure to use gloves, goggles, and long sleeves, work in a well-ventilated area, and keep all ingredients away from pets and children!
To resize this recipe, use these percentages:
10% sweet almond oil
26.67% coconut oil
46.67% olive oil
13.33% shea butter
3.33% beeswax
6% superfat

Hi Katie! It’s because of you I started my journey with soap making. I am a mama of 5, an aunt of 15+ & I would just love to ace this recipe! I have a question. What temperature do you use to heat the oils up? I am trying to successfully get the lye water & oils to the same temperature as they cool

Hello I love your video! Thank you for taking the time to make it. I have a two quick questions: 1. how do you formula your own soap recipes? Experimentation? I have found a lot of good recopies that I want to try out but I do not want to copy someone else’s soap recipe. I plan on opening a business to sell soap based products. 2. I have a toddler and will be making cold process soap. Can I do this in the kitchen when she is not around? I will use all safety precautions. Thanks!

This recipe sounds like just what I need for my very sensitive skin. I have a general question: Do you keep separate tools for cooking and soap making? I've heard arguments for and against it, and I'd rather not have duplicate pots, pans, blenders, etc. for something I do once a year or so. Thanks for all your videos--they're always so clear and straightforward!

Thanks Barbara! I do keep separate pots and a separate spatula. I don’t think there any safety issue but I find that when I’m using a fragrance it lingers in the pot... not so good for good!

Could I use other oils instead of coconut? Such as jojoba, aloe vera and calendula? Also can you add a different butter to this as well?
@debbieescobar6267
@debbieescobar6267 4 жыл бұрын
Jelisa S coconut oil gives you the big bubbly lather. The only subs would be palm kernel flakes or babassu oil. Jojoba oil doesn't bring much to the party, it is actually a wax. Aloe vera is not an oil; it is often a substitute for water to make the lye solution. Calendula is not an oil either. It is a botanical usually infused in the olive oil, added to the batter itself, or sprinkled on top. Yes, any butter can be used. All recipes must be run thru a lye calculator.

Hi Katie! I used your recipe to make baby soap. I used Mother's breast milk instead of water. My ph is between 9-10. Is that about what your ph runs? Is that gentle? I like it around 8-9.

does the % of each oil matter a lot? or is matching total quantities and having a hardening oil and moisturising oil okay?
@HeartsContentFarmhouse
@HeartsContentFarmhouse 4 жыл бұрын
substitutions are okay, but balancing each oil, like you said. but you'll need to run any new recipe you create through a soap calculator as the amount of lye needed might change, and understand that the finished bar will be a little different
