I have a CS cutlass machete. This works well in the toolbox of my truck because it doubles as a tool for my outdoor task to minimize any legal complications. A full dress cutlass or sabre would be frowned upon by LE. This being said, the back of the handle would be more comfortable if it were swept inward instead of outward. That and maybe the blade could come a few inches shorter to reduce weight and make the tool a little more handy. Just a suggestion to help the more budget minded customers. Thanks CS!

likely to stagger an opponent, either for you to run away or for you to deliver the coup de grace. Though of course with thrusting styles, very little of your blade is needed for a lethal blow, allowing you to better stay out of harms way in order to deliver a perfectly targeted thrust. So in conclusion, no Sword is inherently superior to others in all situations. Certain swords are designed for certain jobs, so really, it is all dependent on the swordsman, not the sword.

Where I really see sabers coming into their own is when defending against a home intruder. In close quarters, a blade will be faster than most guns. Besides that, most people would think twice about fighting against someone with the confidence to use a sword against a gun.

The crossover is one of my favorites, but, outside of a strip, I have found that it's directional versatility with little extra preparation is its strongest suit. Also, the deep extended lunge can, if executed at the proper time unbalance an opponent, or cause them to retreat too far, leaving them open to a successive strike from an advance from the deep lunge that shifts naturally from a lower strike to a higher one with a single step. Done quickly this is lethal

The CS "1830" Napoleoic saber is a shadow of an actual Model XI/1803 saber but DeLongis still handles it very deftly--if CS could just manage a decent distal taper like the French did standard issue, THEN you'd really have something, and someone like DeLongis could really make it fly.

@Rex6Tremende11 жыл бұрын
When you cross your legs, you gain directional mobility, allowing for a more diverse ending location without sacrificing balance. It's a more improvisational tactic. The fencers style lunge works best where it's most often seen, and the recovery is dependent upon the conditions of the fight. If you are successfully parried or dodged, you could interpret the weaknesses or strengths of you opponent and proceed in either fashion.

every part of the Mosin is a weapon, you can swing it like a bat, use it like pike, use the steel butt plate as a bludgeoning weapon, etc. Don't forget a dagger must also be drawn. And if the guy with the gun has his weapon drawn its game over. The famous saying, "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" is popular and widespread for a reason. The greatest warrior cultures all fell to the gun. Its very important not to forget that and to see how good some people are watch Deadliest warrior.

@SuperNintenzo Technically, in Arizona it's perfectly legal to carry a sword for self-defense, since there's no limit on blade length here - pretty much anything except nunchaku is permitted for carry. (AZ discriminates against ninjas.) Of course, carrying a sword means that everyone will look at you like you're a complete psycho, unless you've got the whole period-correct outfit to go along with it. On second thought, the outfit might not help, either...

Hello Cold Steel, I recently purchased one of your 1860 Civil War pattern sabers. It’s everything I expected and hoped it would be. I’m really in love with it, but the scabbard bothers me because it seems that it’s going to dull the edge. The scabbard a steel and there’s nothing on the inside of that except maybe some plastic springy retainers. It makes me not want to draw it out because you put a really nice sharp edge on there. In order to draw it out, and considering it is a long sword, and considering that the scabbard is supposed to be worn hanging from your belt, attached to you, it’s not as easy as with some other sorts to draw it while protecting the edge. I would be happy if you would also offer a Kydex or nylon or polycarbonate or wood scabbard to go along with it. Maybe put steel on the outside of that to make it just as strong and traditional looking but I would certainly like to protect the blade. That’s my only concern. I really love the sword and I see myself wearing it regularly. I was honestly thinking about having a maker of Japanese scabbards custom make one for the saber, but I think it would be best if you guys were able to do that. Just a thought.
@andreweden94054 жыл бұрын
I own the 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre, and I had some of the same concerns. You can get it with either the traditional steel scabbard OR the leather scabbard with wood core. I chose the traditional steel one. My solution is just to always store/display it out of the scabbard. Now, when the zombies come, it can go into its scabbard, and I'll probably have to resharpen it a little more. But otherwise, just keep it unsheathed. Also, I believe Matt Easton has a video on this very topic!
@slaughterhound87933 жыл бұрын
Is there any way the scabbard could be lined with leather?

@lanson0 If I recall correctly, the first main idea for the katana was its ability to be drawn and slashed in a single movement. A very useful trait against cavalry and charging foot soldiers. Everything else really happened to come along after. The katana sure is lop-sided for thrusting while the shaft on a european sword is usually more balanced for obvious reasons.

"That's where you parry with." So it's gonna be one of those instructionals...
@JackSilver141014 жыл бұрын
@jesuskopp Better late than never. You generally want to parry with the flat of the blade, instead of just blocking, try to deflect or angle your opponent's blade away from yourself. That way, not only are you keeping your edge from getting too damaged, you'll also keep it oriented on your opponent.

(cont). The Uchigatana is a 2 handed weapon, so it will have more leverage in a bind and you can put more power behind your strikes, however it is rather short for a 2 handed weapon. Sabres are mostly single handed, therefore they allow more dexterous wielding and fluid movements, one of the products of this is that a Sabre can more easily catch you off guard. Not to mention it does have the reach advantage. An Uchigatana is capable of Iai attacks, cutting strait out of the draw....

(cont). thanks to it's curvature and it's relative short length. A Sabre has a heavy pommel and hand guard, which both protects your hand and adds to the fluidity and dexterity of the Sabre. Conclusion? Both are excellent weapons that were designed for specific purposes and both excelled at their respective roles. Sabres were not just for cosmetic effect, and Katana were not magic. @deathcon30011 жыл бұрын
i personally prefer cross steps because you make a very short move with the first step, and the long movement is with the second action of the step (unwinding) and it allows you to make the larger portion of a step in a shorter amount of time, thereby surprising your opponent and closing a gap with less chance of them reacting/retreating, as well as allowing you to be ready for action as soon as you land, rather than having to draw up your back leg before any more action can be done

Hey y'all. I'm new to the Historic European Martial Arts thing, so I have a question: What is the major difference between this type of sabre/cutlass and an Italian dueling sabre?
@urseliusurgel43658 күн бұрын
I would only use the so-called 'sabre grip', with the thumb along the top of the hilt's grip, if I was intending to' give point', that is thrust. This grip allows the point of the sword to be brought more in line with the axis of the forearm, making the thrust easier to accomplish. However, it is a fundamentally weaker grip than either the 'handshake' or 'hammer' grips. A stronger grip gives a stronger cut and ensures that one's sword is less likely to be knocked out of one's hand by an opponent's cut. I would tend to use the 'handshake' grip as my default grip as it is easily converted into the hammer grip to make a really powerful cut, or into the 'sabre grip' to make a thrust.

Uh, one handed swords were THE predominant swords for 4000 years. In Europe, 2 handed swords didn't really develop until circa 1240, with improving and more frequent use of good mail armor. To vastly oversimplify the History, when firearms became good enough to make armor obsolete, the use of two handed Longsword, great swords, etc went extinct, and one handed swords remained until repeating sidearms were perfected in the mid 19 the century.

Sabers were intended to be used by mounted cavalry, so they were developed as one-handed swords; because the cavalryman needed the other hand to hold his horse's reins to keep control of the horse.

@newtubetubetube A straight-blade is geometrically better designed for thrusting, there is no arguing that. A even things like Longswords, Side Swords, True Broadswords and Jian which can both cut and thrust, will be better at thrusting than any Sabre or Katana. With a Strait sword, more of your force is directly transferred from your body, down the blade and onto the tip of the point into the opponent. But conversely, a curved blade is geometrically better designed for cutting, as...

Angelo had been one of the best fencing masters of the 18th. cent. In his later days he practised his fencing lessons as a transvestite with overweight. He still won every duell. Think about diversity ;-))
