I met some Gurkhas overseas on deployment in Afghanistan, and they all carried Kukris; when I spoke with the interpreter he mentioned not only are they issued, but they have to be earned by each Soldier through very hard trials and a great sign of respect and manhood in the Nepalese culture. They cherished them and wore them as a sign of respect and maturity. Very cool.

As a British veteran, thank you for your kind words brother, appreciated. Regards the knife, I have it in O1 and its a beast of a thing. I've been beating on it for 4 years now and it's still perfect. God bless cold steel. God bless the USA&UK.

Glad to see you test this knife. A Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri isn't cheap but is a totally awesome tool. It is best on green wood. I have been using one of nearly everything I could find to help recover an overgrown farm. Out of everything I have tried the CS Gurkha Kukri was the best. At about a 30 degree downward chop young pines and sweet gum can be cut with one stroke. Bigger pines just push with one hand and chop. They break every time. It isn't a lightweight. I carry mine using a piece of nylon strap fed through the belt loop and crisscrossing through the slots on the sheath forming a big across the body loop. There are enough slots that there isn't any slippage. The length can be custom fit to where it hangs slightly behind you. You can draw it with one hand using you thumb to overcome the sheath's grip. A Cold Steel version of the Kukri is a great replacement for a small axe or hatchet. The kukri is so much safer than an axe. A small axe has 3-4 inches of cutting surface. A miss with an axe can be dangerous. The kukri has so much more safe chopping area. A true Nepalese kukri is generally very heavy relative to the CS version. I haven't seen a Nepalese one yet that didn't need hours of work getting it using sharp. My favorite "true" style version of the kukri is the 3-Chirra version sold by Frank's Knives By Hand. You can get a much better sheath from Frank's KBH also. One with a big ring for an over the shoulder loop (no one handed draw though). The Cold Steel Gurkha Machete has about 75% of the chopping performance of the kukri but also requires hours of sharpening before use. They have almost no edge when purchased but that is reflected in the price. A great small chopper that is almost equal to the CSGK is the Svord Machete. It is lightweight but stout. Made of an excellent steel (L6 differentially tempered). It has a convex edge so phonebooks, mousepad and up tp 3000 grit sandpaper. The CS Gurkha Kukri sharpens easily with old fashioned crock sticks. Pad the ceramic rods with aluminum foil so they don't wiggle and all you need to do is to stroke with the blade held vertically.

I am a big fan of Cold Steel knives, and I love their Kukris. I had the 1998 model of their Kukri, the biggest one they had it their catalog back then, because I am 6'4". I felled the need for a knife bigger than my Trail Master. The knife came super sharp, as I did the hair shaving test after unboxing it, I shaved off not only hair, but a layer of my skin. I never have thought that a knife with a spine like that could be so super sharp. It had a nylon sheet with two lashes, fixed with snap dasteners, so 2/2 of the blade came out "backwards" off the sheet. You often see this system or something similar on lots of machete sheets. It madedrawing and resheeting of the massive Kukri pretty easy. The Kukri disappeared later in the then comming divorce, together with another 10 k worth of fine knives, alone 5 John Ek originals, lots of Cold Steel knives like two methinks 9" and 12" Tanto in San Mai, a Fairbairn Sykes Dagger, a German trench dagger from WW III, some old knives made in Solingen, Germany, a fine WW II japanese Katana, and what angers me the most, the artillery officers sabre of my Grandfather, who was a colonel of the mounted artillery in World War one, when horses had to pull cannons - and an original medieval one handed sword. A friend of mine restaurated it for me, repaired the handle and restaurated the blade to a condition I was able to use it for cutting. When times get better, I sure will try to buy some of this knives again, maybe I am lucky on the second hand market. I want to have a decent Katana, aa medieval sword, let it be a replica, but I want to have a bastard sword, and some Tantos. And at least one or two of the John Ek knives, plus the "Pig Sticker" I loved so much. What a simple knife, but effective and well ballanced. And some more knives that are on my list. I'll never give up. Everything will be OK, some day. #22aday Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed. Greetings from Germany!

one thing I was taught by a person who grew up in the jungle using a machete, When cutting you need resistance to have a single clean cut thru the item. Choose the Angle that will give you resistance, so it doesn't bounce when hit. You want it supported so that the blade can hit, bite, and continue thru, being resisted the whole cut. giving you that Perfect just right cut we all love... of course always thinking of.. Where is that blade going to end up! Blood circle :D keep a good Trauma kit/tourniquet with these and any large bladed tools :D cheers fellow blade lovers

#22aday It is always fun watching you work a big knife. This was the first Kukri style knife I've ever bought so hopefully, I don't cut something off that I mite need. Loved the review and demo and thanks for helping me out before I bought it. I did pay too much I didn't shop around and rarely is DLT high on their knives so I didn't check prices but it is what it is I will pay more attention next time. Thanks, Brother

I used to love CS but I no longer buy their blades, however I still have a master hunter and a kukri in sk-5 and it just doesn’t chop as well as my Barkies because of the convex grind but it’s still a good beater chopper. I agree with you about meat and potatoes and subjective and all that, yes if it’s sharp it’ll cut but how long does it stay sharp and how hard is it to sharpen, these things are important. I thoroughly enjoy seeing you hack stuff up nice video 👍

That chopping back in the swamp looked like a good time. I am glad you are going to have more time there. Everything here is either subdivision or industrial warehouse. Hell what used to be a heavy wooded area that had a fair amount of deer is now going to be some warehouse as they have 40 truck docks waiting for city to finish infrastructure for it.

Go for one with a full tang. And look for one with the original nepalese blade geometry, with two or three "Chiras". Their blade geometry and grind makes them great batoning knives. Those Cold Steel Kukris with their flat grind are great choppers, but as good in batoning as every knive with a flat grind: it works, but there are better knives for this. You know why those bushcraft knives have Scandi grinds (like the Jakaripuuko) or even high scandi grinds (like the Tops B.O.B.) or sabre grinds (like the Fallkniven A1), they want to split the wood fast and wide to crack it all the way down.
