A look at the modification process of the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk. A very fun creative process that also allows a connection to the past.

Brother.. this was so awesome as to defy an adequate compliment. That 'hawk turned out absolutely amazing... a one-of-a-kind piece of craftsmanship. Loved how you included a bit of history in here as well. This one's going in the favorites (not to mention the ol' project list :) Thanks for taking the time to share this man.

You just need to fill the hole where that nasty set screw was. I've got 5 CS tomahawks, and two of the viking axes. And that set screw is vexing. I usually get a bolt and or machine screw from the local hardware story. Then using Red Loctite, screw it in until the bolt is almost but not quiet flush with the inside. Then cut off the extra bolt sticking out. Sand and polish, then finish with Perma Blue. You did a great job.

Pipe Hawk is the best Cold Steel model IMO. Large cutting edge and the hammer pawl. I've had mine for a few years and it's going strong. Thanks for sharing.
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
+enscribe good to know. They do seem a pretty good value for what you get. Even if I didn't put the stain on it, I do think they still need some work to be optimal, ie edge sharpening and proper head fit.

Great video sir. Keep us updated on how well it performs. My only concern is the grooves you cut into the shaft, as slight as they are, would be a place over time that would develop a stress fracture and crack on you. Great craftsmanship.

I have a rifleman's hawk from Cold Steel and I am impressed on how tuff they are. I took it on a camping trip and used to split firewood and I beat the hell out of it almost trying to break it and it held up. I would bury the head in a log then swing all of it at a tree like a ball bat splitting the log, I did this repeatedly over a week. the hawk survived it all.
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
+Tim Goward Nice. I have yet to hard use mine yet. But I keep hearing they are tough.

The blemish is differential heat treatment. On a lot of blades, it's a desired trait, like the hamon on a Japanese katana. I just ordered one, and I hope the heat treating line is more defined all the way across the blade. I just realized that this is a 7-year old post.

Btw, thx for sharing the effort w your Thawk. Your vid's always help me maintain the dream of my younger age. Regarding removing metal and creating a more wide funnel, then when you need to start "repairing", it's a good idea to start w turning the axe shaft 180 dgr around it's length axis, so what used to be towards the palm of your hand is now towards the finger tips, when you grip. Then wack it firm like you'd already did it by now. But their axe heads are to narrow in the top. And if you want to keep the shaft "alive" for a longer periode b4 buying new, this has helped me. Hope this was more clear - you dont have to answer, better make more vids :-D
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
+ulf lyng thanks for the info. Just took out the hawk for a test run. Head needed much more adjustment but I finally got it squared away in the field with a wedge. Working on editing the vid now so won't be up for a bit. Thanks for the info again and appreciate you watching.

@takotabyard4923 Жыл бұрын
That came out really nicely, well done! One thing I didn't see was how did you darken the handle? You aged it very nicely
@kyle_noseworthy8 жыл бұрын
A Maddox style handle will usually have a little jiggle in it anyways, especially when new, since it hasn't had a chance to really seat on the handle. However, they've completely went against the whole point of a Maddox handle by just putting that bump stop up at the top of the handle! haha It has nowhere to go to.. Glad you saw that and corrected it early! I really like what you did with this hawk! Great job. How did you burn the lines, such as with the little mountain scene? You said you carved the lines, but how did you burn them? Great video Crocket!
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
+Weiderfan I used a wood burner I picked up from a hobby shop. Great little kit that will also burn leather. I might try adding a personal touch to some of my leather sheaths with it down the road.
@kyle_noseworthy8 жыл бұрын
Oh yeahhh, I've seen those! I had one when I was a little kid!
@ulflyng40728 жыл бұрын
Keep 'em coming. Love your vid's. Got the same, done the same. Found out that cutting wood from the stock is futile. Open up the axe head w a file, so the stock fits in like in a funnel. Remove (a little) metal instead of wood. It's razor sharp if treated right, but don't split logs w it. Had to bent the axe head back after splitting. But it's not meant to split though
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
+ulf lyng will have to give that a go on the next one. Thanks for watching.

+Chriskelly19067 Sanding - yes I sanded before I started. Two tone - stain first then linseed. Have fun making one. That linseed takes at least a couple of days to really dry (and I live in a dry area so it may take longer depending on where you are).

Great video man. Hey! As a camp tool, would you prefer the pipe hawk, the trail hawk or the rifleman's hawk?
@Cr0cket207 жыл бұрын
Probably the pipe. Wider blade than the trail. The rifleman would be a good contender but it all depends on what you're looking for. IE if weight matters, chopping power, etc. Depending on what you want to do could highly affect the outcome.

+85montie That's a vid unto itself. Essentially I started by hand. But all my rough sharpening stones/tools are worn out. It took me a long time. I ended up purchasing the ken onion work sharp to rough in the initial edge on the norse hawk. The pipe hawk was a combination of the work sharp, spyderco ceramic stones, and finished with 2000 grit wet dry sandpaper.
@85montie8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply. I've not heard of the work sharp, but I will look into it.
@stefanwolf888 жыл бұрын
the spot on the blade is not really blemish in means of HT quality - it is result of the way that CS HT the blades in mass production quantities - if you have access to a belt grinder you can remove a 0.2-0.4mm from both sides and it must be gone + it will improve the blade geometry
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
+Stefan Wolf I was watching some other vids on the CS hawks and saw almost the exact same blemish on someone elses. I think you're right in that its related to their production process. If it were heat treat related I think there wouldn't be such uniformity in the blemish...or maybe I should call it a beauty mark ; )

the cold steel pipe hawk is really a fancy version of a hammer poll hawk ! to be a pipe hawk it has to have a pipe bowl ! of course not beinh a pipe hawk it is more useful as a tool around camp and as a weapon !
