Preparedmind101 takes a look at the Cold Steel Thai Machete. Although a machete of this design really has no practical application when it comes to bushcraft/survival/etc...for what it is, it is pretty damn nice. If a budget sword is what you are looking for, this is probably the best of the Cold Steel Machete Sword offerings by far.

swords ain't no joke, if SHTF then not a lot of people will know how to make bullets! eventually bullets will run out, swords don't need bullets and bows also have reusable ammo. all these products have a place in this world.

It's really amazing to see, that you intuitively held it at the right spot. Many people get that wrong. Positioning the hand just one thumb away from the guard is absolutely right and should give you a great pivot to wield this blade, if this machete is balanced like a traditional war sword.

Lol love all the hater disclaimers. I actually find myself using a Cold Steel Cutlass machete quite a bit over the summers. I gave it a proper regrind and it cuts very well. Since I work in the 100 mile wilderness of Maine, the only people to judge me are my family, friends, and co-workers... and luckily they can't get rid of me easily. I have two concerns with this: 1) The handle looks pretty round. Most swords and large blades have more oval handles to helps line the edge up more intuitively. 2) It is really long. If you are cutting up brush, sometimes you get into tight spaces, and that handle may get in the way. I would firmly called this a Sword machete. It may be fun like a sword, but in design it is fundamentally different than a sword.

I still gotta love the thing. Its funny how people actually would judge us just because the handle is different, but sadly they probably would. I get this crazy forest of 12' tall bamboo/rhubarb looking plants behind my garage and my wrist is pretty worn out by the time I get them chopped with my normal machete. I bet using two hands and some extra reach would help a ton. If I stencil "Craftsman" or "Ace Hardware" on the blade nobody would say crap. Awesome video. Keep up the great work!

Perhaps..somebody have wondering about why Thai Sword have such of that long handle ....one of the reason is to protect your wrist upto the elbow during the flighting. Because if your wrist - elbow was cut / hurts ,... then it's easy for the eneny to take off your sword or finish your life. Hence every time you move your blade out , the handle with be in the direction to protect your wrist - elbow. So if it is the real thai sword .. there has not only come with the sharp blade , but the strong handle need to be provided as well.

As a student of the sword I will say while it is cool, it absolutely by definition, not a sword. There is no distal taper at all. The blade geometry is completely off for that. It is a sword style machete though. I actually own a Thai Krabi and oddly enough while they were originally designed to be used as a machete they are now, actual swords. LoL. Looks like a fun tool though, good video.

If you practice, swords are still a viable option for self defense today. Fire arms are obviously a factor, but if you're close range - if someone goes to reach, you can get to impact quicker than them, so long as you're within about 10 ft; almost every time (with practice)

PREPAREDMIND101: Nice practical video evulsion. I agree the Thai Sword/Machete seems to be more similar to an actual Katana, then the CS Katana, which is more like a Ninja TO. Maybe CS should make this and all the Sword Machete with Thicker and some with even longer Blades. I am thinking of as a survival tool defense weapon against dangerous wildlife like Snakes, the longer blade and handles helps, one could also rig up a handle to it for such purposes.

Hi. I gotta say that I appreciate that you made this video. Not many KZfaqr play around with it. To tell you the truth, I want a pair of those things too; because I like larping or cosplaying and I want to look cool, but due to some personal reasons, I can't get any of them right now. Here are some things that I think you might give out some misinformation about that thing. I'm not here to complain, just to share to you and anyone who want to know about it. I'm not an expert or anything, but I speak Thai and actually have a chance to meet a Thai sword master. First, every time I looked it up in English online, they called it a Thai machete. The actual word in Thai language of this thing is not a machete, but a sword. It has been made to use as a sword for a fight and not for using as a machete. This explain why it does not work very well when you were trying to use it as a machete. Second, the long handle was created to protect the holder's wrist from getting cut by his or her enemy because one of the famous fighting method of this sword is to slash the wrist's tendon so the holder cannot use or hold his or her swords any longer. After that, he or she would be vulnerable and at the mercy of the enemy. They may or may not get killed. The reason behind this tactic is slashing the wrists are easier than getting to the neck or stabbing in the chest because those deadly areas are being well guard by the sword fighter. If you take out their wrists, they are at your mercy. Third, the handle meant to be a bit slippery because the way people use it is by swinging their wrists in circle (not sure you can imagine the action but that is the closet English translation I can come up with to describe it). They claimed in doing that, it actually confused and made it harder for their opponents to predict the way that the sword would hit them. I've seen it in action and in the hands of someone who knows how to use, I can't predict where the sharp blade is gonna land on my body. I don't know if someone else might be able to predict it or not, but I'm sure I cannot. In addition, the swinging tactic is also useful as a shield protecting the sword fighter from other weapons. Forth, many time I've heard about Thai sword fighting, most of the time they stated that Thai swords were designed to use in pair. One hand on one sword. It is not 'all the time' requirement to use the swords in pair. They just said that to use these swords in its most effective way is to use in pair, but you can still use only one sword. That would be all I can think of about this misinformation. I agree that cutting water bottles is a better way to test cutting it (and also kill zombies in zombies apocalypse). Oh, and no-one has ever use it to make fire. At least not to my knowledge before you did. Most people would claim that it is dangerous because of the sharp blade. What you did was really cool! By the way, I don't know if it is the way the blade was made at the beginning before they shipped it to you or the material, but I think you can sharpen the blade to be sharper than that. I mean a lot sharper. Thanks for doing this video anyway. I'm glad there is more video of this particular sword. I think katana is overly used in media and it is nice to see some other Asian style swords beside the one from Japan once in a while on media. This type of swords is not well-known even if in Thailand and even less well-known world wide. Swords fighters in Thailand are hard to meet even for Thai people. Some Thai people still think it is just a re-creation of something similar to Thailand medieval era (except no witch hunt) and no-one practice it any more.

It has its uses, if in light brush with lots of briars or vines is nice to have something to keep your hands away so you don't get scratched up. For 90% of the line cutting I do (land surveying in the Southeast U.S.) I use a 2 handed Latin, for the thicker, heavier blade. Both take and hold a great working edge with a bastard file, and in 6 years have not had any Cold Steel product break. I can't say that about Ontario, Cornetto, Tramontina or Fiskars, have broken all of them at one time or another due to being too rigid. Yes, machetes are for light brush, but if you hit a 10 inch oak a quarter mile down line, you use what you've got if you can't traverse around.

It looks like the handle is a little to round and so you get a little rolling in the hand.

I don't know why they chose to call it a Thai Machete when it's technically a sword used in Krabi-krabong

Why do people keep complaining about the thing looking like a sword? It's meant to look like that, it's basically a traditional thai sword made out of modern material, so shut it. + The guys at Cold Steel didn't design it like that without a reason

Darn it, now there's another Cold Steel machete I want. I like Cold Steel's sword machetes, I have intentions of getting their Kopis, Cutless, and Gladius machetes, once I get the Smatchet of course, and now I have to add the Thai machete to that list.

I have the kopis and the cutlass. You will love them. The kopis is light and a monster chopper.
