Cold steel trail boss loose axe head repair
In this video I will repair the axe head on my cold steel trail boss. After having a difficult time finding a sheath for my Cold Steel Trail Boss, my axe sat in my garage, dried out and shrunk! When I took it out to cut down a tree for a ridge pole the head came loose. Let's get it fixed!
If you are looking for a cheap axe sheath, follow the link for a low cost sheath that fits the cold steel trail boss. www.amazon.com/Style-Craft-94...

We will see how it turns out. I have it sitting in a bucket of boiled lin seed oil now just for a little extra insurance. It does feel really solid. I think it will be fine. Happy new year Dave! All the best to you and your family brother.

Bummer Mark, nothing is ever easy when its leisure time. Don't be so hard on yourself man, it was a cool project and came out nice & effective. Thanks for the encouraging words as well Mark, "try things" ...hit home for me because I'm always reluctant to fail and ruin stuff. Thumbs up!

In the end I am happy how things turned out. I cleaned it up a little on my sander and it looks great and holds well too. I think it was bothering me because I couldnt figure out why that metal wedge would not go down. I like to post things like this succeed or fail because I believe you learn more from failure than success. KZfaq is full of people that do everything perfect. Every time I put out a video there is some guy telling me that I have done something wrong. That's ok this gives me an opportunity to assess what they have said, see if it will work for me and learn something. I think the best thing I can say is just do it but take your time, think things through, know what went right and wrong and we can all do more than we think we can!

Great video!! Sometimes when we fix loose tuning pins on a piano (steel against wood) due to drying out we inject a substance called pin tightener into between the steel and wood with a syringe which actually swells the wood and it gets a fresh grip on the steel pin. for large gaps epoxy fills them very efficiently. Available at piano supply stores..

Hey thanks man! This was just a plain old cold steel trail boss that I modified. Some budget axes can be awesome with just a little bit of work when you get them home. This trail boss came with a great handle and decent steel. Definately worth the extra time. Now it chops great and looks pretty good.....I think so anyway.

I didn't realize those barrel wedges were so long, i think the idea behind them is to spread the wood in all directions. Gransfors now doesn't use any wedge at all, not sure if i like that Lol. Thanks for the tip Mark ( :

Ya it does make sense but they do a lot of damage to the handle wood too. I had a sledge hammer that had no step wedge at all just a wooden one and it never came loose. I think as long as the handle wood is properly dried before it is made you dont have to worry about shrinkage. GB also sinks their handles in oil after they mount them which probably seals the axes up really nice from drying out and helps the tight fit. I wouldn't worry about it too much you can always add one later.

Hey how are ya brother. I have seen that too. I am always worried that it will be too hard to remove if something has to be adjusted. These axes are great and ai think you can get them reasonably cheap. I believe they are around $40. Even wranglerstar give these 👍👍 My repair is holding up really nice I did some chopping with it yesterday and it is good as new. Happy new year brother.

I just checked my Trail Boss, and it has TWO barrel wedges and no split or wooden wedge. I got a Style n Craft mask but all mine will fit is a hatchet, and very poorly at that. Great job in repairing your ax.. Good replacement handles are expensive. I got one I have to hang in the spring, head and handle both yard sale finds. Thank you for the video, Mark

No wedge at all? I have never seen that before. The mask is not the best for sure but it fit mine with some stretching and pulling. After I piled the leather it started to fit a little better. It is a $13 temporary fix until I can make my own. I have the head soaking in oil now it should lock that head down for good. I am going to look for an old axe to try a mod project just for shits and giggles. Lol should be fun. I got to start hitting hard sales. Happy new year.

Hey Mark. After watching your last video I started looking at the Trail Boss again...hard to beat the price...Do you think the head coming lose is related to the quality of the axe handle or just getting dried out?
@AdventureTimeOutdoors
@AdventureTimeOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
No absolutely just drying out. It is an excellent axe. I really dont know how they sell for this cheap. It sat in my garage on my work bench in my garage for 4 seasons barely being used. Totally my fault. I have also had this axe for 3+ years at least. I cant really remember when I got it. Great axe.

I like that axe, where did you get it Mark? My father always put the axe in a bucket of water for a couple of days when he repaired it to swell the wood. Happy New Year to you and the family. Keep up the great videos, we love them.

It is called a cold steel trail boss. You can order them on Amazon but they dont look like mine. I stripped the paint on the head and sanded the varnish off the handle then oiled it. I stick the axe head in boiled linseed oil instead of water. Works great. Happy new year to you too.
