Just subbed, refreshing to see someone else who takes the time to sand and finish by hand instead of a multitude of machine tools. I too, removed the paint with sand paper and found the remaining traces of paint left in the many recesses resembling forge scale. Great job!

Subbed. Don't chop me ;) Great project. Leatherwork is a great idea too. I'm going to start my own Trail Hawk mod this week. Strip head, stain handle, blue head. Teak oil. Keeping it simple. I already have the Pipe Hawk, Norse Hawk modded. Loved how they turned out. May your Trail Hawk serve you well for a Lifetime to come.

Will the leather binding hold moisture in the handle or will the end points shed moisture well enough to make up for it?

Cut the back like feathers to help it wick water out to dry like they did in days of old. Yes the cut leather fringe is practical

What steel protection did you choose? I did the same sanding method and I love the way the paint is down in the grooves of the metal.
@WELSBYROOTS7 жыл бұрын
Evan Jamison I didn't use any steel protection. I just give it a good wipe down when ever I sharpen it.

WELSBY ROOTS very nice. Seems like a lot less trouble than going through with the bluing process and such. Thanks man

Mark Bagley Thanks for watching! I rub a steel protection component on it. you could also use stone oil.

Using this for a future project. How well does the edge hold up and what's the best way to sharpen it out of the box? New to the axe world.
@WELSBYROOTS6 жыл бұрын
Cojo1225 get yourself an axe stone and sharpen it just like a knife. You can pick up axe stones on amazon. Thanks for watching!

Maybe you'd have preferred a larger tomahawk? Cold Steel's Pipe Hawk is incrementally bigger and the Rifleman's Hawk is more so. CRKT makes one, called the Chogan, a good bit heavier with a larger cutting edge as well. My impression of the Trail Hawk was that it is made pretty much as light as can be dome to retain usability-- everything is a tradeoff with tools n gear.

Hi Buddy, very nice Trailhawk work! Thanks for sharing this. I like most of the Cold Steel Hawks... my favorite is the Norse Hawk, followed by the Trail Hawk. Do you also throw your hawk?? Cheers Erik
@WELSBYROOTS8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, no I haven't gotten that far yet. but I really want to master throwing the hawk. Do you?
@pearliemccann9897 жыл бұрын
Erik1970Viking Agree. The Norse Hawk is extremely useful design. If Cold Steel would create two more designs like it, one with a hammer poll and the other with spike. I'd be very happy indeed.

Really wanted to like this but I had to mute it less than 1/2 way through ... WAY too many "uh"s and "umm"s. Annoying AF! Aside from that, it is a great project. Really admire your work!
@jrozanec13 жыл бұрын
nice job. but you ruined one of the key functionalities of the tomahawk which is removable handle
@WELSBYROOTS3 жыл бұрын
Im still able to remove the handle, Just takes a little more effort. thanks for commenting and watching!
