This design was a bit of historical misdirection on the wielder's part. The imposing weapon was traditionally known as a gunstock war club, and this name is no accident. During the early North American colonial period, when most natives were still using stone tipped arrows and spears, even the flintlock rifles and muskets that we now call primitive represented a massive technological leap forward in the field of warfare. Any warrior possessing such an advanced weapon and proficient in it's use instantly gained a tremendous advantage over his lesser equipped adversary. The gunstock war club's shape was very difficult to distinguish from that of an actual firearm at great distance, and the possibility of an opponent possessing such a lethal instrument of warfare could often be a terrifying deterrent for a raider in search of an easy mark.
