@@thrashermosher419 that’s because the Vietnamese MiG-21s had such a disadvantage compared to the F4 that they only fought during the most optimal of conditions, and only did hit and run attacks. Operation Bolo shows what happens when MiG-21s are put in a fight without and huge advantage

No it definitely still had compressor stalls since its just a new version of the same engine and the intake design didn't change, its just a lot less prone to getting them at high AoA, but it 100% still gets them. Wasn't mean for fighting with high AoA the changes were done for safety when landing more than it was so you don't comp stall in combat.

@@alexgraphene I didn't say they didn't do anything to it did I? Infact I said the opposite, there we changes made ("new version of the same engine"), however, that does not at all address what I said and if anything confirms it. It still had comp stall issues, you/they also never gave a reason for the comp stall margins but I can bet you that it wasn't for combat since the Viggen was not to be used in a dogfight which is the only place it would experience that to detrimental effect except for takeoff/landing. If anything it was for higher takeoff and landing AoA, considering the Viggen's design was based around the ability to perform very quick turn arounds from public roads. Dunno why you commented really tbh. But okay.

@@evangalinsky2499 The issue was fixed in the new engine, but the new engine was reserved for the JA variants, and never made it to the AJ versions. (because it didn't need it.) So I guess in a sense, yes it was still an issue in the AJ, but it was fixed for the JA.

“The MiG-21 hates the one-circle”. Honestly, the Fishbed seems better at nose to nose fights than its reputation would suggest. Yes, the delta wing will drop your speed like a rock in high AoA turns, but I’ve been finding that the phenomenal roll rate means you can get your lift vector back onto the bandit VERY quickly. Just don’t miss those crossing snap shots….

A Cold War Era recommendation -- the Ogaden War (1977-78) included air-to-air combat between Ethiopian AF F-5s (A models, and E models) and Somalian AF Mig-21s (MF, bis, and UM models). Might create an interesting dogfight.

That is one of the flight characteristics of a design with a large canard like the Viggen. That canard will stall out before the wing does. This actually prevents the wing from going into a full stall. If you go look at Burt Rutan's Vari-EZE and Long-EZE designs, as well as his Vari-Viggen design, all 3 demonstrated the same characteristics. The canard design is solid.

@@karjalasta you know, in 1933, when it was designed and fielded it was the most advanced fighter. No one could even come close. Most nations still operated biplanes. I dont see how the I-16 is "the worst fighter". P-51 though? Not nearly as revolutionary for its time (1944-45), and did not outperform its competitors in such a significant way as the I-16 did during its time. No dice, buddy

There are basically 2 Saab Viggen, 1 The Saab 37 Viggen ( First flight 1967 and deployed in 1971 ) it is a attack plane and does not have a internal gun... And 2 The Saab JA37 Viggen ( 1974 , in service 1979 ) That is a fighter plane with the best EW and a internal 30 mm gun.

5:05 Glad you said that the Mig-21 is an interceptor. I am not sure most air forces realized that, which explains the Mig-21's not-so-excellent dogfighting record. The lack of rear visibility makes more sense in an interceptor.

The mig 21 is not an interceptor, its a front fighter, which in US parlance is an air superiority fighter. It is simply not meant to dogfight, rather rely on missiles, and utilizing its superlative speed (at least at the time of its design) to entirely avoid turnfighting.

looks like you are using the EMG / 2nd after burner .... thats good . also.... at 12:23 you probably didnt run out of ammo.... but just jammed the gun try hitting the 2 and 3 buttons below the weapon selector . it will fire an explosive charge, and hopefully charge/unjam the gun

The Mig-21 is such a pig. Pure zoom and boom interceptor, not designed to dog fight at all.

Draken vs Mig-21 would be an even more interesting dogfight. Finnish air force had both airplanes all the way to the nineties.

Can you include more 3rd person clips of aircraft taking punishment. I like the cockpit gameplay but including the shot cam would be very cool as well

Ya but if you don’t see it in a video it’s because the track is corrupted and it was impossible to get the 3rd person perspective whenever it is possible I will include the 3rd person shots

Can't say I do much dogfighting in this thing to really argue "how to play" it opposed to you, but this felt more like an experiment to see who can stall earliest in a turn and burn rather than a real dogfight... there were very few energy conserving maneuvers or maneuvers in general done for getting a bead on people. I kinda wanna see how it flies with WW2 energy retention maneuvers; this things roll is insane and could probably be utilized effectively, but who knows vs another delta wing.

Viggen-pilot: No one ever will beive me, what just happened here. Does this count as a kill for me? MiG-Pilot: I have to take-down this crippled Viggen, before it crashes into a city -> Viggen crashes into a city after got rammed by MiG.

DCS only offers the AJ 37 version of the Viggen, the original model, a strike fighter optimized for ground attack. That explains most of the shortcomings GS has noted both in flying and fighting against the Viggen in one-on-one air combat. Should DCS offer the JA 37, which was designed principally for air combat, he's going to notice a number of differences, including a more powerful RM8B engine (28,000 lbf in afterburner), a multi-mode pulse-doppler radar with look-down/shoot down capability and capable of providing guidance for Skyflash SARH missiles; and a conformal ventral gun pack with a 30mm Oerlikon KCA cannon linked to a HUD. From 1982 onward, the JA 37 was equipped with a STRIL datalink that could connect four aircraft to each other and with ground controlled intercept networks. Externally, the JA has a taller vertical fin, providing enhanced stability at high AOA. If the JA 37 is offered on DCS, you should give it a spin--it's a very different ride from the AJ version of the Viggen.
