Paul. Thanks for sharing what you do for frost protection and your experiences and examples. The interesting info to me that caught my ears is you are in zone 9B! Wow! What city are you in? I'm in NorCal, in southern San Jose, also zone 9B. Last week I had temps in the 30-35 range for a few days and am glad I covered my 4ft rooted cuttings with plant blankets and seedlings in Walmart portable greenhouses were I saw a 10 degree difference in temps. I just want to protect my DF to not be in the freezing death climates to survive and thrive in the warmer weather since we are caring for non-native species. So far, so good! We don't all have a greenhouse, space or funds but there are many inexpensive ways to buy the few extra degrees and protect your DF. I used to own a nursery but I'm a backyard grower hobbyist like many of us and I know I have to plan my frost protction strategies, pay attention and be ready because if you are in a colder zone, it's not if, it's when the damaging frost will show up.

100%... Well said! The duration of the cold, soil moisture, and variety are key factors. We are lucky to have short cold snaps out here. Thanks for watching.

I would love to have so many dragon fruits you have. I have just one kind. It’s hard to find them here in Canada. Good job and I love your videos!

That’s a great video! Here in Mexico winter is about 40 to 30 degrees. The problem is that I can’t cover them with any plastic or something because they’re literally exposed on my roof garden. I’ve seen some damage. However, these pants get better after winter. I’m still staring with This protect and I hope it works

They are tough plants! You can also use burlap to cover them in the winter. Good luck!

I’m pretty sure I could, it would just be more work, but do you think I could grow dragon fruit in South Carolina?

Hi~ It's possible, but you will need to bring them in when it gets colder than the low 40's in my opinion. I live in zone 9b and had some lows dip into the 30's this winter. Everything did fine.

Could you grow them in zone 8B in a high tunnel with a heater during cold spells? How long before they reach maturity and how much fruit in a year per mature plant? I've only had a yellow dragon with white flesh and I love it. Thanks.

I think you could do it. I've had my dragons survive a short spell of 29 degrees last year. There was some frost damage, but they bounced back quickly. Here is some information about cold hardiness. ucanr.edu/sites/VCMG/files/243725.pdf

Some growers in Texas build portable trellises to roll inside the garage during cold weather.... I thought that was a brilliant idea.

When it freezes and the core gets exposed do you cut off the rotten parts and leave the core? I am just wanting to be clear about how you have treated the frost bitten parts 😊. Thank you Paul!

That is correct. I use hydrogen peroxide to clean it too. However, I left the grafted piece on Darkstar and it did just fine by itself.
