@@evdm7482 You missed the point. It's a story of the company's executives' reluctance to see the potential of what their own engineers were cooking up. Those bean-counters just couldn't see beyond their immediate top-selling product. They were so terrified of disrupting their core revenue stream and possibly taking a hit to their bonus and stock value that they made objectively short-sighted decisions. I have been a graphic designer since the age of 13 (I am now 55). And I started using all of the Adobe products almost from day 1 of their existence. I also learn how to use some of the competitive programs (but not much beyond the very basics). Being 55 however, some of this stuff was slowly starting to get over my head. Simply because the programs can do far more than I currently need them to do. But for many of the younger people around me, all of this new stuff is great! Which is good for them. It gives them a leg up from what I can do, and it can carry them further on in their careers. Myself, I have switched careers over to one that I've been wanting to do for years. So I would no longer 'need' to keep up with the latest and greatest. Well, guess what happened? Yup - I use the programs just as much now as I ever have, just with a different need and a new end result. And now I am needing to learn all the new stuff for the new career. Who knew? LOL I guess I will just have to take more time and get my brain back into the "learning is fun mode", which is where I was for three decades. Until the industry, I was in stopped being all that fun anymore. And now with new energy and a reinvigoration about the products, I think I will have no problems getting back into that mode again. I guess stepping back occasionally and taking a look at what you're doing from a different angle, is something I should have done a while ago!

You might think that the subscription based paying system sucks but thats one of the only ways how adobe can keep making profit and update their services. If everyone bought the program or suite once, they [adobe] wont be able to gain profit in the long run and you won't be able to keep yourself updated with the newer programs as you would have to pay an insane amount of money each year for the same program with a small update.

sami deiri Steve Jobs talked about the downfall of Xerox. When a company has gotten so big and has a monopolistic market share, new tech won’t increase the amount of consumers since they don’t have competitors, but marketing will. So the people who are in charge of the company are the sales people, the marketing guys. And they lost vision of what made the company great in the first place. A modern example would be ex-MS CEO Steve Ballmer. MS got to a monopolistic position under Gates (97% market share). Ballmer was a sales guy before he became CEO. He followed what Bill gave him. When Apple introduced the iPhone, Baller mocked the iPhone and said no one would ever pay $500 for a phone, and he saw no threat at all coming from Apple. Then once Apple has proven to be changing the entire tech world and Google and Samsung jumped in on it, MS finally decided to go in, once it was already too late and took another loss. Apple overtook Microsoft to be the #1 company in term of market cap. When the sales people are in charge of tech companies, their #1 priority is to grow existing products and make more sales, not to innovate and get ahead of competitors and market trends, which lead to their downfall.

What's a bit funny about their expensive pricing these days is that, for non-professional use, it doesn't even matter if it's older versions you get ahold of. Photoshop has been good for a very long time. I've been using CS4 for ages, but I'd argue that even photoshop 6 was great. So there really isn't any need to pay a fortune for CC if you have the old stuff.

Great content as always Dagogo. I feel as a designer and an Australian, I'll always have a love/hate relationship with Adobe. I still remember the pre-subscription price gouging they targeted at the Australian market. It was cheaper to fly to Los Angeles from Sydney and back to buy the Creative Suite in the US than to buy it locally. It still hurts my soul to give them a single red cent, though it's virtually unavoidable in the creative industries. The early legacy notwithstanding, they are a hugely exploitative monopoly. 😕

Designing shit wallpapers and editing videos downloaded on a dial up connection. Then I used to sleep at 5 in the morning just to get up at 6 and get ready for school. As an independent artist and designer, I bought Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator in 2000. It was worth every penny. I didn't upgrade every time it came out but I did every other time just to keep up. I never stole Adobe products or gave copies away. As an artist, I was never driven commercially. I used Adobe constantly just to see what was possible. I resent the move towards rental service and as a an artist that doesn't always make money. I fear they will eventually upgrade my stand alone copies of Photoshop out of existence... I know it doesn't mean much but artists like myself supported Adobe in the early days...

Something you missed about Photoshop: the Knolls worked on James Cameron's The Abyss when they were still shopping around the tech that would become Photoshop. The movie required a convincing effect for the "water snake" alien, and the Knolls realised that they needed to map an image over the 3D model with correct reflections of the room it was in, and that their photo-stitching tech was the perfect way to do it. So they shot photos in every direction in the set, and got their image map.

*My first contact with what is now Adobe was "Aldus Pagemaker", in 1987. At the time I was working at a company that was placing a new product on the market and doing all the work in-house. Aldus Pagemaker ran somewhere (don't remember the exact price) under $1,000, and that made the break-even about a month: prior to Pagemaker, we made changes by having the local publishing house do all of the actual conversions and setting, at a cost of a couple of hundred dollars an hour - the company was spending well over $1,000 a month for the setting of manuals, advertising, etc. It took a few weeks to master PM enough to be useful, but once done, we were free, and the production section for this product exploded. It also kept costs low as a large part of the production budget was setting and printing of manuals. Unfortunately, it required (and was sold as a bundle with) Windows 1.0, which I **_loathed!_** I never learned to actually love windows, although I easily learned to love all of the many Adobe products, whether they were "really" Adobe's or acquired.*

@@yt-sh Yes, the Technology/tool may first be thought of as useless (and indeed many times, they turn out to be), and unfortunately marketing may be required to show the value, the use cases as always been the most important driving factor, and that's what Steve Job has been the best at seeing and facilitating (i.e. even in cases he doesn't immediately see the use case/value of something, he successfully surrounded himself with people who did and eventually mad him see it). So when I replied to you, I was really replying to the "art" aspect of your comment. I’ve been using Adobe software every day for almost 15 years and I’m getting tired of it. They have no excuse to have such bad integration between their apps and that many bugs. great video, ive been using adobe since the beginning! this brought it back for me. somewhere in my old portfolio is tons of work from the 80's and 90's. Used to sell Macs from Computer Era in New York City circa late 80's early 90's. Installed systems at the ad agencies and was one of the early digital artist with my company Visual Excellence Inc. I founded in 1991, I introduced digital art and printing to the silk screen printing and was designing in Quark Xpress as well as adobe software. I was a graduate from NYIT and was teaching computer graphics and hiring students to work from My company. Adobe was one my foundation software, and I used every program around. I remember working for a few of those old Print shops in which i installed macs and converted operations to that adobe workflow. This video brought me back.

I understand but there's a difference between hobbyist and people using it for a living. IMO people who have the same opinion like yours see adobe suite as separate programs instead of a workflow. like Lr, Ps, Il, Id, Pr and Ae can do similar basic things but one program can do one thing better. If we think of it has workflow moving from one program to another, and actually using their cloud service, the money is pretty worth it. especially recently with lockdown, I and my friend collaborated online using their cloud service. I didn't need to download shit from google drive, all the drawings were there in Id for me to place. I understand it's expensive but if you look at it in that perspective then it's worth it. Affinity looks pretty good but CC is just too good of service.

We outputted a PAL genlocled signal to Sony beta cam via a Truvision NuNista card. Crazy thing was, our Macs only had 12MB RAM - that was massive back then.

It was so cool to able to design our entire Magazine "The Beat" on that little Mac in Honolulu. Who knew how fast Adobe would grow, and it seemed every year the learning curve got more intense, but we hung in there. The companies which have kept themselves to the forefront of technology have prospered. :-)

"PhotoShop" is so pervasive and ubiquitous that it has been a verb for well over 10 years. Adobe currently has some of the most buggy software, and one of the most annoying "ecosystems" in Creative Cloud .. however their support and community more than make up for this. If you complain about CC on twitter, Adobe will help you, or apologise. They won't ignore you, or look down at you and question if you paid for their software. There were even rumours that they created some of their own software's "cracks" back in the day ... the theory goes that having students grow up hooked on (cracked) Adobe products, even though they can't afford them, means they will shell out for licenses when they hit the industry, or convince their employers to adopt the Adobe suite in the future. Was it true? not sure. Was it smart? hell yeah.

Yes I use Adobe products all the time. In fact I started with cracked versions of Photoshop and Illustrator back in 1999. And have been cracking their software for free ever since. Clean cracks too. Macintosh too. I'm also running a clean cracked full working version of the entire Microsoft Office suite. I love open source software LOL BTW I learned Premier Pro and it's a whole lot of overkill compared to easy to use video editing packages like Camtasia (which started out as a video screen recording package). It's a million times more intuitive and faster rendering than Premier and produces the same results for simple internet videos. Probably not good for full on professional movie quality stuff but maybe they've improved it since 2013.
