"The Gambler"
This episode sees the arrival of Flt Lt Jack Collins. He is a con man and gambler that cheats. He uses his card skills to pull Captain George Brent into betting everything including his house and losing it. He also plays cards with a German guard and manages to take him for enough that the guard is forced to help Collins get a metal ID tag for civilian workers in the castle.
Collins wants no help from the rest of the British Officers and seeks his own escape methods. He feels that if he can get out he will make it based on his pre-war knowledge of Germany, fluent German and the fact that some his former clients in Germany were Jews that were hiding that fact.

I love the interaction throughout the entire series between the Kommandant and the SBO. Two War Veterans (both survived WW1/The Great War) understanding their situation and the reality that WW2 has placed them in... Respect and understanding, always, in both directions!! (Except that one time where the Kommandant thought the SBO "was deserting his post", but when he found out the underlying reason, once again bent some rules under compassionate reasons!)

Quite a dishonorable action for any officer in the services to take advantage of another "brother officers" weakness at gambling. Very unlikable character. Quality drama like this is now sadly missing. Arguably this was a golden age of Television history.

I liked the way David McCallum ordered the two Officers of his bed for the second time 18.52......I had that in Boarding School in the 70's where your bed was your only space and sanctuary and you felt "invaded" if you came into your dormitory and there were boarders sat on your bed messing it up using it as a meeting place !

Love this series. Somehow missed it in the 70s, although I remember briefly seeing part of episode on the CBC, but didn't give it a chance. My loss then, but enjoying it thoroughly now. Bernard Hepton is extraordinary as the kommnadant as is Jack Hedley as Col. Preston. Bernard Hepton is also outstanding in "Secret Army," another Gerald Glaister production, which is equally compelling.

In a time long before "Easter Eggs" and subtle references in film/TV etc, this show did a nice job of dropping a couple that I've picked up so far. In this episode, Collins mentions to the Colonel that he was on his way to Stalag Luft III near Sagan, that is the site of the "Great Escape". Gerry Anderson hated the John character so they kept him up in the space station for most episodes, although he usually appeared briefly in every episode because Thunderbird 5 was the first to pick up the calls for help in most cases. An assumption on the part of the writers and director etc that viewers understand the worth of various hands of cards. Though it isn't necessary to know in order to get what's going on, it is probably not as dramatically-charged to those (like me) who have no clue what the close-ups of the cards actually mean in terms of winning/losing hands...plus the whole idea of gambling, playing cards etc is not very compelling to those who see no point to it. But, the gambler is such a noxious character and so-well performed that this episode still succeeds as drama.

In reality, Captain Brent would be under no obligation to pay Collins. It was war and they were prisoners. They had no idea when the war would end. Collins would more than likely have been shot escaping and would find it very hard to escape to England. It would take Collins months to get back to England. If Collins had got back to England and presented this cheque and deeds of the house, the bank would never allow it as they would have no idea if Captain Brent wished this or not. A stranger coming to the bank with the deeds. It would never have been allowed.

Air gunner - The role was to defend the bomber using the aircraft's machine guns. In the early stages of the war usually an enlisted man, he could hold any rank from aircraftman 2nd class (until June 1940) upwards but most often a sergeant although some air gunners were commissioned officers of which a small number were considerably older than most aircrew and even veterans of World War I. An air gunner wore a single-winged aircrew flying badge with a wreath containing the letters AG on his tunic, above his left breast pocket denoting his trade specialisation and very early in the war might also have the brass "winged bullet" qualification badge of a pre-war air gunner on his sleeve.[32][34][35]

I think it was summer at the start of the 1st series because they played cricket, and then there was an episode where they had to put the cricket stuff away because it was autumn. I reckon they kept it as winter for the rest because it gives a dreary atmosphere.

Prinz Nezz- "...they kept it as winter for the dreary atmosphere." That's a good point, like a true writer, and it really make the show. Since you brought it up: the term here we might want as a writer is "PATHETIC FALLACY" which means attributing emotion to aspects in nature. Like saying the clouds seem sullen, leaves dance, etc. Thanks for that comment I would never have thought of this term without you pointing it out.

The Wehrmacht controlled Prisoner of War camps and followed the Geneva Convention rules nearly 99% of the time. They did this, because the majority of the Wehrmacht were not sadists like the bastards in the SS, SD and Gestapo. They were army men who believed in the rights and rules of prisoners of war.

One must give evidence of that very knowledge - by which I mean: Brent obviously did not know HOW Collins cheated. It's not always the shuffling or the marked cards. Besides: (a.f.a.i.k.) to cheat cunningly was considered to be something of a gentlemans craft (at least in the 18th & 19th century) and it took a lot of said craft to expose such gentlemens feats...

That scene is seen at 29:08 but Collins' two cards ( Ace of Hearts & Jack of Spades) were always the same as before that and they never changed. So I am wondering if he has just hidden into his sleeve one useless card which had already been swapped with Ace of Hearts or Jack of Spades at the first stage of this card game session.

Their building a glider (it actually happened although it never flew) got me thinking. I wonder if they had ever considered a hot air balloon. Should be easier to build than a glider. Wait for rainy windy night and off you go. Germans would likely all be huddled away from the rain and wind.
@robertstallard7836
@robertstallard7836 2 жыл бұрын
A hot air balloon is huge and takes an awful lot of hot air to make it lift. To do that nowadays, the balloon is laid out on the ground with the mouth held open as powerful gas burners effectively blast hot air into it until it has enough in it to start to stand upright, and eventually enough to rise. The amount of heat needed is, however, considerable and the burners are very noisy. Where could the balloon be laid out to start with? How/where would they get bottled gas? If they simply used a fire to provide the hot air, the fabric of the ballon would have to somehow be supported in an upright position to allow the hot air to rise into it. Such a fire would be visible for miles and you couldn't have it anywhere inside with wooden roof beams etc. It's actually much easier to make a glider!
