A singer-songwriter from near Cattletsburg, Kentucky, he now works full-time as a musician. His musical passion started as a young teen, when his dad bought him his first guitar in 8th grade. It was really his stepdad, Scott Sword, who encouraged his learning, and Cole credits him with being the real reason he started playing.

My dad told me he would break my legs if he caught me in the coal mines and to leave and do something different. I went to war, found the love of my life on an island, then became a tug captain. No regrets except because I left, I never had enough time with my dad after that. He is still the greatest man I've ever known.

This song really speaks to me. I come from a long line of West Virginia coal miners who were so poor they couldn’t even afford to go to school, let alone move somewhere else and find better jobs. It took a group effort to get them out of the holler and into a city a state away for a better shot at life, and my dad doesn’t let me forget what it took from my grandfathers so that him, my brother, and I could live better lives and not have to work in those mines.

This will go down in history for one of the best Western classic country songs ever written. The story telling is great, the tone and temp pace the story and you can feel the description in the lyrics and voice. It's very well put together and I'm very surprised he isn't getting credit that needs to be given to him. Cole Chaney has pure talent

Eastern Kentucky has really turned out some of the best singer/songwriters in the last 10 years. I mean, not just good musicians, but great songwriters too. Music is my lifeblood, and musicians like this just haunt you with lyrics matched with their vocals. That's coming from an East Tennessean. There's a music festival here called Bristol Rhythm and Roots, and I'd love to see you there next year. Jason Isbell is headlining this year I believe.

In Johnson county holler where the minin' comp'ny bloomed He lived in a house with all five brothers, his dearest sisters too The summer heat was as bad as the mud that the humid air did brew In the winter the snow just blowed on in through holes in the wall you could throw a dog through [Verse 2] As an able-bodied boy he lied about his age To help his father break away from the rattle of a poor man's ball and chain They made him shoot their coal and he was grateful at the time There was many a boy that'd done the same and they'd never come out alive [Chorus] Better run coalshooter run Run away as fast as you can And when you get to the end of the tunnel just keep on runnin' my friend Cause this ain't no kind of life that a young man should live If you can run faster than gunpowder burns you might see the light again [Verse 3] Well they were bitin' down on blasting caps just doing like daddy asked Even though they knew that the next bite down could surely be their last You ain't got no time to be scared no, with dynamite in your hands Don't hesitate boy cause if you slip up, son you're as good as dead [Chorus] Better run coalshooter run Run away as fast as you can And when you get to the end of the tunnel just keep on runnin' my friend Cause this ain't no kind of life that a young man should live If you can run faster than gunpowder burns you might see the light again [Verse 4] They sent him deep into the mine where a boy can't see the light of day Guided by the lamp on his head in the dark he begins To pray that the fuses were all cut right and that a stray spark don't take light And prays that he won't die in this mine, he hates the thought Mama cries [Chorus] You better run coalshooter run Run away as fast as you can And when you get to the end of the tunnel just keep on runnin' my friend Cause this ain't no kind of life that a young man should live If you can run faster than gunpowder burns you might see the light again You might see the light again
