The only advantage I've noticed out of moon gel is that you can quickly apply them or remove them between songs if need be. That's pretty much it.

I use drum dots and gaff tape and clear moon gel. It depends if I practice I use clear moon gel or if I'm on a gig I use drum dots and gaff tape 😎🥁💯💪🏼

For me, it depends on the context. Sometimes tape, sometimes moon gels, wallet, e-ring, it really depends on the room, how you hit that day, how tired you are etc.

Can you link the brand you buy or something? I'm trying to find even one Gaffer's tape that's well reviewed and going nuts. I can only find ones for $17 that people say are cheap crap and leave residue like duct tape and don't stick very well.

@fartpoobox ohyeah Cheaper, more bang for your buck, and if one side of the tape wears out you can peel off the plastic and use the other side

I find this video at odds with my personal opinion. All your complaints about moon gel, not sticking, flying off on your stick, getting dirty, ruining heads with perpetual residue, not usable on resonant heads... are non issues for me and my experiences. I hope they would be for you too! They're super sticky right out of the case. I have literally never hit a moon gel with my stick and taken it back with me. Just realize the amount of surface area of tacky sticky moon gel stuck to a head in comparison to a stick tip that hits it for one second. If the moon gel gets dirty wash it. Yes it won't last forever but they are CHEAP. We've all seen the stick chips on them but if they're beyond repair its time to get new ones. And they started off offering 4 in each pack and now its six, as well. They're not $5 OR $10, they're $7. Period. $6.99 every time. If you know how to tune, which I'm not saying you do not, a pack of moon gel on 4 drums could last 6-9 months conservatively. If your moon gel is on a head long enough to leave a residue then its *probably* time to replace the head anyway. I only ever saw residue because it was on the resonant for like 2 years which leads to your final complaint, not being usable on resonant heads. The roundest yet most controlled, most versatile floor tom sound I've ever gotten was on a 16x14 maple floor tom with a moon gel cut in half, INSIDE the drum on opposite sides of the resonant head. It was so good I didn't change that resonant head for that long. Just needed half of one on top and moved it around as needed. I... just... I've used moongels for close to 10 years and my only complaint was that it was blue, an issue which isn't even one any more as they're offering it in clear. A single roll of that tape is $20 and you have two. You've spent $40 on dampening three drums. Take care of your $7.00 moongels when you get them and they'll return your investment far greater than black tape on white drum heads any day, which in my opinion is a bit ugly / sloppy looking.

Hi Chris, Thanks for your input and I appreciate the time you took to make your comment. I'll try and address your points a little more specifically than I did in the video: -I've seen drummers hit Moongels and pull them off or lose the impact of the stroke numerous times. Of course it's not common, but it's a non issue with gaff tape. -You are correct Moongels cost $6.99. I was speaking casually about the price, and feel like I was actually pretty on the mark saying $5 or $10, all things considered. -The condition of your Moongel shouldn't be an indicator of whether or not you should replace your heads. When to replace heads is another topic I've discussed on this channel, and indeed it's quite common for jazz drummers (or any other, for that matter) to keep heads on far longer than the time it would take to build up gel residue. -As I mentioned, it's true that the rolls of gaff tape are comparably more expensive than a single pack of gels. However, a common gaff tape roll size is 55 yards which I estimate allows you almost 2000 uses. 3 packs of gels, I don't believe, will get you that kind of mileage. Thanks for watching!
