My father was stationed here in 1971-1976. We lived off base for the first year then in the apartments. I remember with so much fondness our time there. Daddy made a tank for a retiring Colonel I believe. I remember the PX, the base uphill and bingo at the NCO club where momma worked for a time. I loved our time spent in Germany and miss it. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

I miss the blood and guts dining hall. I was stationed there 1984 thru 1987 It was the best time of my life, I used to go the K.F.C and the Henchen House right outside post. We had a nice nco club with slot machines . Awesome parade fields very nice place to live. MY unit was Service Company Second Batt. 3rd A.D. Spearhead baby. thanks for the upload

The last time I was at Coleman was April of 1966. I was attached to B Company 122 Maintenance Battalion doing radio and teletype repair from 1963 to 1966. The base looks much better than when I was there, lots more landscaping! I spent a little over two years at Coleman, I enjoyed my tour of duty.

I was in Delta co 1/48th Inf Aug 1958-Feb 1960,the same time Elvis was in Friedburg. Also was in Fort Hood with him where he signed autographs and took photos. Elvis was a genuine nice person. Returned to visit Gelnhausen in the 1970 with my brother Arnold who had been stationed in Kirsh-Goens with the 3AD. What surprised me most of all is how clean the Coleman Barracks and the town on Gelnhausen remained.

That brings back some memories. Bravo company 1/48th "blood n guts" battalion, sergeant, weapons platoon, motorized 81mm mortars. 71-73. We did all the major training areas, a few real cold winters. As a draftee, it was nice for me instead of an assignment in Nam. Thanks for sharing.

I was in A Company 1/48th B & G also from 71-72. I drove a M113 APC while stationed in Gelnhausen. I remember those cold winters especially one at Wildflecken where our tracks literally froze right in the track park. Also those and hot & dusty training areas of Grafenwohr, & Hoenfels. I also got lucky also and got Germany as an assignment and not Vietnam.

My Dad was stationed with the 2nd of the 6th artillery from 1965 - 1969, before he was sent to Vietnam. We lived in the dependents quarters, and then had to move off base, to Lieblos while he was gone. While he was there, we used to spend a lot of time on the base at Coleman Kaserne, and occasionally made friends with some of the soldiers. We liked the movies, the gym, the snack bar, the bowling alley, the P.X., the Boy Scouts (and would camp up above the base some times) and occasionally the mess hall. My mother stayed in Lieblos after 1974, so I was able to see the base before and after it was renovated. I was in the Army from 1974 to 1976, but I didn't get a chance to visit there during that time.

WOW! Thanks so very much for the tour! As a 19 year old, I arrived in Coleman in June of 1956. Gelnhausenwas a bit more than a village and a great place for fun, beer and nice young women. I was in . Sweeney's B Co. and ultimately became the Commo Chief. At 76, I cannot imagine trekking up that hill to the barracks, while in an !!alcohol stupor! As an oldtimer of the 33d Tk Bn, I have had my nostalgia satisfied for the moment. Again- Thanks, It is well done and your wife is a great pilot!

What you call Delta Co. was, at least from 1977-79, known as Combat Support Company (CSC), Among other things, the Battalion's Scout Platoon was attached there. And there I was, for just shy of three years...and I had already completed a 4-year hitch in the Navy. (There was a woman involved...let it go). So, if anybody remembers a guy known as "Squid" from those long ago days, I'm still alive and well...well, kinda...Anyway, to all those out there with a 19D10 MOS, "Scouts Out!" (And Skin's In!)

Nice seeing the old place again! I was 1/33 Armor HQ company - mortar platoon. 1984-1985. I lived in the first building on the right entering in the back gate. 6:38 point in the video - in front of the parade field. We used to run out the back gate all the way up the hill. One time we did some rappelling at the top. Spent a lot of time in the field at Grafenfoer, Baumhaulder, and one other one - can't remember. Saw the A-10 tank killer jets live fire once at Graf - very cool. We had the M-60 tanks and were just getting the new M-1's when I left. I was working the plotting boards in the 577 command track for the mechanized mortar section - 4 deuce. We partied hard in Frankfurt - Sachsenhausen - every chance we got. Thanks for sharing!

Good memories, mostly Thanks Right across from main gate was a motor pool and next to the motor pool was a concrete drainage ditch, a solider didn't want to pay a taxi fee after a night on the town, so he ran from taxi down that drainage ditch and fell in, knocked himself out, his shoulders were just as wide as the drainage ditch and he drowned in one inch water. My friend and I found him! Ran to main gate and UP's took care of it...

I was in the 29th Scout platoon in the late 50s they changed to the 48th in 57? I think our job was to road guide the Reg. or any other troops to the training areas mainly Wildflecken ( my favorite ) or Grafenfier? -- forgot how to spell those.--- and then be the enemy for the exercise . And what you are showing on the tape is all strange , except for the buildings we lived in . In the winter we got our kicks watching civilian cars trying to make the hill of the circle I think most of the expanse of grass at the bottom was where we parked the tank , jeeps and other vehicles . Ah the memories , thanks for posting .

I served with 3/61 ADA in Buedingen, but lived down the road from Coleman Barracks, and worked a lot with 2nd Brigade between 82-85. We went back to Germany over New Year's this past year, and spent New Year's Eve in Gelnhausen. Glad to see your video- when I went to the Kaserne, it was cloudy and foggy, but we could still see the old post- unlike Budingen, which has been fenced off and is still mostly desolate (the Cav track park is in use, though, by a construction company). Kind of sad to see Coleman civilian-ized, though. Didn't see a single reference to the Army ever being there. Where the chapel once stood is now a dance studio... no respect.

I was stationed there from Oct 86 until it closed. Got a European out and stayed for an additional 10 months until 11 December of 1991 when I came back home. I was in Bravo 3/33 Armor. When you saluted an officer, you said "Pickles sir!" That was so funny. They retired the colors and renamed us 4th, Bn, 8th Cav..."Mustangs sir!" was much easier when saluting. They changed just before we went to the CAT (Canadian Army Trophy) competition for tank companies. We won it for the first time.

Stationed there 1975 - 1977 The pond referred to in this video is the location where two young newly promoted men to Sgt drowned. They were thrown into the pond even though one could be heard yelling "I CAN'T SWIM" Occurred about 100 ft from the Military Police Station. A damn shame a real damn shame!!

WOW so much has changed. I was very much a different person then.. 1/48th Infantry -Blood and Guts "HIGH ANGLE HELL" 4.2 Mortar platoon HHC Dec 1987- Dec 1989. I remember 1st Sgt King G. Murray giving us our morning and COB briefings. Shout out to: S.Sgt Stafford, S.Sgt Kearns, S.Sgt Larosse, Sgt Blankenship, Sgt Link, Spc Davis, Ralph C. , Spc Culver, Spc Venus, Spc Nichols ( Nicklehead) , Spc Crossley, and so many others I had the opportunity to serve with ( please forgive me for not remembering all of your names, but I remember your faces) . I was known as SPC Beal "THE FLAAAME" Shout out to Spc Durham on that one. LOL. In Dec of 1989, I was PCS'd to Fort Carson, CO, where things took a bad turn for personally. I hold that one of the best times in my life was spent here, if I could have known then what I know now, maybe things would have turned out differently for me, but I am glad my life has brought me to where I am now. Allot of the names I have mentioned are probably long gone ( RIP) from old age, or other.... I will NEVER forget all of you..."I left the Army, but the Army didn't leave me" my own personal quote. A message to speerhead67... Thank you so much for capturing this video and posting it. So many memories... DRAGOONS! "PRESENT ARMS!" Salute.

I was with the 127th MP Co stationed on Pioneer Kaserne from '81-'83. We sent a shift of four MP's to Gelnhausen every 12 hours to work at the base because they didn't have a detachment of MP's there. We didn't have enough personnel assigned to send three shifts at 8 hours each. I remember it being a really long drive up there and back, though google maps puts it 14-22 minutes(?) I could have sworn it took almost an hour.

It was drained in 77 due to the death of a new E4 @ HG Company. Had a cement bottom. Guess it was originally a catch basin. My wife worked @ the theater snack counter 77-78.
