A few month back a local subscriber reached out and gave 3 generators to the chennel. The first one I will be looking at is this Powermate Pulse generator. It appears to be in good condition, but has not been run in a while. When last used, it was running rough and leaking oil. Lets dig in and get this running like new.
I use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner.

If you have a piece of granite counter top or plate glass you can face the carb with some 800 grit sandpaper. Then thoroughly clean carb.

My first carb cleaning I didn't know that the seat was replaceable, blew out carb with compressed air seat went flying out never found. Lesson learned on the job

Here's a sign that I've been watching for a long time... at 41:20 when you replaced the airbox cover, I said to myself, "I bet he's gonna wipe that little bit of dust from those fastener notches"... 20 seconds later, bingo! Still learning new things from you every video, but you are methodical just like me. 😉

I just finished one just like that and the carb was a mess and the capacitor was melted out. After replacing the 7.5 capacitor with an 8 microfarad it gave me 127 volts and cleaning the carb it was a really nice machine. It still had the battery charger cord in the bag and was never used. I picked it up for $20. Thanks James.

Way to go James, you seat the needle seat with a drill bit that's covered in a white or grey dust which is all over your gloves now and then handle the needle and re assemble the carb with the dust covered gloves, Just saying!

He used the blunt end of the bit to push it in by hand; which is far better than others I've seen before. I remember as a teen [other neighbours] starting multiple -argument*s* with- 'lectures -at- for' me because (among many other things) _someone_ didn't use the _blunt end_ of a drill bit (to do something similar), then blamed me [...] It took entirely too long for _someone_ to say "Use a clean drill bit to put it in." included using the drill _machine_ to spin it in because to him "That was ovbiously self-evident; How else do you use a drill bit!?" [...] (For a while) Things were much quieter (for me) with the neighbours after that ...

James. Nice job. Well done. I have an older version of that generator and it bailed me out this past Monday and Tuesday when a high wind storm came thru the Chicago area. It ran my sump pump and alternately my refrigerator and a freezer. Good little generator.

I had 2 of those, I lent one to a friend after sandy and it kept a few lights and her fridge going for several days, she even switched between the fridge and her oil burner doing a little load management Great little generators

I believe the oil leak was do to the fact that the rubber bushes were missing and changed the angle of operation. In return it sends vibration to oil cap and was leaking because of no o ring.

I picked up this same generator from the side of the road in the trash. It ran perfect but no power out. It wound up being the capacitor. It has been the best little generator. Love your videos!

Having watched more of your videos than I'd like to admit, I figured your preference is for 4 stroke, over-head valve engines mostly with a power head containing an AVR. If it's not too far out of the scope of your preference, can you cover a 2 stroke, 2HP engine without an AVR? Greetings from South Africa.

I've fixed more than one of those. Good little units. Cap fails, loses output, needs to be field flashed. A 9 volt battery shoved in the AC outlet momentarily usually does it....I think they were sold under various brand names......

Hey Jim....I heard the peepers in the background or at least I think it was. 😁 That genny was running great for it age. Glad you were able to find that annoying fuel leak. One of my wife's coworkers has a genny he wants to get rid of. I may take it and see if I can get it running. It produces power but will not stay running. I am confident enough that after watching your videos for the last 4 years I can tackle the job. Thank you.

James, Your posts are always full of so much information. I have the same kind of 1850 generator use it a lot and it has years on it and had to use it yesterday due to power outage and it started right up. Only thing I did was put a fuel filter just after the on/off fuel valve and I use fuel stabilizer as well I try and start it ever 4 to 5 weeks and run for 15/20 minutes with a load and run carb dry when shouting down. As for oil leak had to replace rubber seals from valve springs to air box and gasket to cover and no more leaking. As for the rubber shock absorbers on bottom mine are in bad shape and have been looking for replacements and have yet to find large enough ones to fit. If I find any I'll let you know where. Used to have that model on our fire trucks to run the on scene emergency lights. Our worst problem was the ethanol fuels eating up seals and varnishing up parts. Also recommend brake parts cleaner on the oil residue. Saves a lot of wiping time and paper towels. Just have a catch pan for the run off.

On the carb casting you can also run it over sandpaper to smooth and flatten it.

I had on of those years ago James and it was in good running order . But I never liked it because of the weight to power output . You worked wonders with the running and leaking issues ! ..ENJOYED

Another easy fix. Just had 2 severe thunderstorms come through here in southern Ohio I was able to get my generator running again after we lost power but it was only for a few minutes. The power came back on just after I adjusted the governor on it

U.K. I almost know by now what you are going to do next so your 'lessons' have finally sunk in. The trouble is that unless you know of suppliers of spares your almost stuffed. Like the US the UK is getting more and more a throw away society. Me ? I'm an ace bodger, but I do bodge to a high standard. Please mister can you weld my petrol tank - and the second word was OFF! I have the same generator with the same oil leak. I seems to be coming from the governor shaft. Why they designed the engine with the governor so low is beyond me, it gets splashed all the time by the oil slinger. I run mine dry cause those shutoff valves love to leak.... It is quite reliable though, usually starts on the first pull. Love the outro & the dog bark at the end!

Hi James. I bought my 1850 brand new from Home Depot back in the mid 1990's and I still have it today. The engine case on mine is bare aluminum and I noticed the one you have is painted black. I don't think that B&S ever painted those engines black in that generator. I'm guessing someone had that engine out for an engine repair and gave it a little paint to spiffy it up before putting it back in its home. Also, I had to reseal my engine case at one time because it was leaking oil like yours. Overall, a very nice machine for the money. Cheers from El Cajon, Ca.

I've received quite a few free generators but if it's not an engine related issue or a defective circuit breaker then off to the scrapyard it goes. Got one of these 1850s from my dad. Never really have used a generator before but I wanted to see if I could revive it. It had sat outside for years. Rust everywhere, literally ever single bolt on it I had to table grinder wire brush. It ran fine(first pull most times) so that wasnt the issue. Problem was it wasn't providing any voltage. Only about 5 volts. Quick internet search for 5v and it pointed to the capacitor that was rated at 7.5uf and only showing 1.2uf. Never seen a capacitor look like that before. Cleaned out like 6 dirt dauber nests, replaced ALL wire connectors, painted the gray front and back gloss black, all new rubber feet(it was even missing 1. Cleaned it up a lot and ordered new capacitor (20$ with shipping) Happy to say it works like a champ again!

James, you probably already know this, but I find that when working with rubber tubing or bushings, using pure silicone lube spray works better than WD40 and makes things slide into place better. Enjoy your videos very much and always look for new content.

James, they sell pool toy squirters at dollar stores and Amazon. I use them for drawing fluids out of containers. You might want one for emptying gasoline and oil from engines..

Ya but how long that plastic & seals will last? They make pumps just for that look like a sprayer but instead of pressuring the container when you pump it , it sucks fluid into the container… guess it would depend on one’s level of OCD 😳 😂 .. ✌️

@@rawbsworld6604 I thoroughly rinse my $1 squiirter with water after every use. It has not shown excess wear at all. I used it two days ago on my car's antifreeze overflow. $1 seems worth the risk even if skeptical.

Yo James! Man I watch your videos all the time now. I comment on quite a few of them. I’mma start calling you “Do it Right Dan”. I always notice how you’re very meticulous on anything you do. BTW, my parents have one of these little generators. It’s actually at my house right now while they are in Florida for the month there is is the 1750 Pulse and has the Kawasaki engine. Starts right up on 2 to 3 pulls after you let gas drop in into the carburetor when you turn the fuel valve open.

Thank god Honda came a long and put an end to those valve-in-block engines. Talk about getting all the mileage you can out of a design, B&S hadn’t invested an engineering dollar in those things since probably the 1940’s. Competition. I have one of those generators, bought new, ran good for about 4 days, light use, started running rough, hasn’t seen the light of day since. I worked on enough of those growing up I wasn’t about to spend my time constantly repairing it.

I had one of these, I bought it in 1994 for $150, sold it in 2020 for $100. I didn't have to do anything to it except oil changes and replaced one rubber foot. It started every time. I used it for camping.

Fine job and not much of a surprise another 'L' head runs again and does it well. I think the outro is simply FABULOUS with all the popping, wheezing, gagging and the dog bark! VERY fitting! I got a new book from Briggs that has all the single cylinder 'L' heads made since 81 for the expressed purpose of setting the governor on my 4 horse on a snapper mower. 110 type and not much about them. Runs fine but the governor is off but I'll get it. LOTS of info and there is always a 'supposed to'. Just enough to make us liars! BLESSINGS, Pal and GBWYall

Yeh, that was a lot of drywall dust on your gloves when you installed that needle valve. I wouldn't be surprised if that caused some leakage past the valve. Cleanliness is everything.

Bending the tab certainly worked, but you might have been able to move to the top hole in the governor lever and gotten enough tension on the spring.

Okay, I am going to bitch. There is something you do on almost every video that just chafes my butt. Each time you show your workbench, everything is in order and easy to work on. Takes me almost an hour whenever I want to work on something to clear a spot on my workbench. So, please, throw some candy wrappers or empty beer cans on that table so I don't feel so completely hopeless. 😁

With that amount of water, add a couple spoonfuls of table salt to the water/fuel mix. Shake it up and let it set. It'll help the separation process.

I'm surprised that it's an 1850 model seen here, as I own one exactly like this seen here, it's sitting in my back shed right now, but it's listed as a 1750 model. Did a service job on it last week, and it runs great, even though it needs a ring job, due to compression being a bit on the low side. I picked it up cheap at a secondhand store about 2 wks, ago, not running. Plan on tearing it down for a ring/valve job, next spring.

Great video James! I gotta up my game and drop coin on the Silgent Oscilloscope ive been wanting. Brushless capacitor excited gens will always be dirty waveform because the inductor (spinning rotor) and capacitor are "ringing" which causes the higher harmonic content. Also known as a resonant circuit. Adding resistance to the output dampens the ringing cleaning up the wave form somewhat.

@@jcondon1 not directly no. It's better to convert the dirty AC output of the generator to a battery charger powering a battery and then that would power a clean pure sine wave inverter. Look at IOTA Engineering. Their vhargers double as a well regulated PSU too

You can flat sand that carb flange smooth. The tiny bit you take off won't make any difference in mounting. I have a 3/8" steel plate mounted to my bench just for this. A thick piece of glass works well too unless you drop a cast iron flywheel on it like I did. Just keep even pressure on the carb as you run it back and forth.

It’s the tube that goes up the center of the carb. It’s purpose it to mix fuel with air for better combustion.
