Today we have a Coleman stove model 425 Series E For teardown, cleaning, maintenance, and rebuild. Also, the fuel valve is leaking and will need to be addressed. The fuel tank was not only disassembled and cleaned but also powder coated due to the poor state of the paint. The whole fuel valve is disassembled as the packing is also to be replaced. The packing was purchased at oldcolemanparts. This model uses the small valve stem packing

It is rare to find someone who has the mind of an engineer, skill with a camera, and great command of clear, precise, English. This would have been enjoyable even if I did not own such a stove (and an old, single-mantle lantern, that still works great after forty years). Thank you!

That is so funny, you said single mantle lantern. I was at a flea market a day before a storm was to hit here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada where I purchased a 23-year-old Coleman 286 that has never been out of the bow, styrofoam still around the glass, and a 425 Coleman stove that has never been turned on, but I was worried about dried up seals, leathers, etc., and here I am, making sure I don't burn the house down by lighting them up without educating myself first. I only hope that it is not too hard to find that valve seal for the gas valve on the 425. I assume all the seals on both units here are dried up and dangerous.

When i got my 1st coleman stove a few yrs ago i watched many videos to learn all i could about them. I occasionally watch some now as a refresher. I have to say this video is the most thorough one ive seen of all. Thank u. One tip--i use very fine steel wool to wipe down the needles, tubes and brass prts. and then spray down with a cleaner.

Excellent video, thank you for posting it. Just got down a 425E from a shelf in the garage where it has been sitting for 30+ years. The tank had some coleman fuel in it. It was my folks which I inherited. Oiled the pump (leather cup) and emptied the old fuel into a can. Found an excellent YT video (this video!) that shows how to test the tank and valves before you put fuel into the tank. My tank & valves tested OK. Then filtered some of the old fuel thru a paper coffee filter back into the tank, pumped it up and it fired right up and ran great. Pretty amazing after 30+ years of storage. Brought back childhood memories of camping & cooking.

8/16/2022 I have an older model version of this stove, probably an A or B version, ( none of the seams are rounded) which I found in the trash about 40 years ago. So it's somewhere close to 60 years old or better. At that time it was rough, but only needed a new fuel cap and generator innards. I have always wanted to rebuild the old girl, and now I have the process to do it. Thanks for a fine instructional video. Rust removal may be problematic though. These old stoves are rock solid and should be part of everyone's preparedness kit. I have a propane Colman, never used it in 22 years, still in its box. I'll go to the old tried and true "White gas" version every time. ;-)

My grandfather recently passed away and he had one of these in storage. I took it thinking it was a propane stove and almost took it to the scrap yard thinking it was a piece of crap before I did some research on how it works. I thought it was the coolest thing. When I got home from work, I took it outside and with the old fuel inside and it being in storage for who knows how long it lit right up and worked perfectly. It's the 425B so I believe it's at least 60 years old. Can't want to pull it apart and get it cleaned up. Your video will definitely help. Thank you

@@retrotechandelectronics , I think many people use Coleman stoves for camping & emergency use. They’ve been around for many decades. Coleman is similar to Tide, or Bounty PTs. A recognized brand, that I think most Americans recognize & don’t consider buying any other Brand. I’m looking forward to seeing this stove totally restored! As many have requested! TY. This was great, and I thank you very much. My father started camping up in the Adirondacks in 1955 or so, me in 1967 as a young boy, and I carried on the tradition after his death in 1987. I still use the Coleman stove he bought in 1956 but have never done any work to it. We used to use unleaded gas, but switched to Coleman fuel decades ago. I've never drained the fuel upon storage and never had a problem just pumping it up and lighting it. Always works fine. But it's been a few years, and after 67 years I think it's worthy of a rebuild. Will buy the graphite from Old Coleman Parts (maybe a new pump leather or whatever they use these days) and hope all the other parts are in serviceable condition. Have to find a place that will sand blast/powder coat the tank...

@@retrotechandelectronics Yeah, figure of speech. I think powder coat is a good idea.

Outstanding in every aspect. Retired Stationary Engineer, Steam power plant for a state facility. Ongoing seminars & conferences, upgrading tech classes every year throughout my career. I know many people who would do just as competent a job on this rebuild, very few who could teach it in as fine a manner as this video. Excellent vocabulary, everything to the point, great step-by-step procedures with the proper explanations of functions. I only regret my lack of access to shop equipment since I retired Thank you for the effort and time you put into this, I know this will help a lot of folk who are not tradesmen.

Much of the tools needed, albeit slower in process could be found at harbour freight.

Already there. Miss the 20% coupons, new store just opened 5 miles down the road. But when I worked, I was welcome in all the shops to use their equipment within my abilities, as everything was put away and the space and equipment was cleaner than when I arrived. I retired in 2012 and my home tools just don't match the equipment, tools and especially the professional advice. I also took care and did the repairs on the HVAC/R ans steam systems as that was my shops' jobs.
