My dad lived in NYC for a couple years in the 70s. He always said he never got mugged because he bought an Army jacket and would start ranting to make people think he was a vet with mental issues. Not the best lesson to teach your kids in hindsight. Edit: many of you have pointed out the self preservation instincts my dad has. It was a good lesson, since I used it during college in eastern DC. That’s part they don’t show in movies.

Your dad taught you that everyone's interactions with you are based on their perceptions of you. Theyll treat you the way they THINK you should be treated. That's a good lesson for a kid, you can survive alot of fucked up situations with that lesson.

The following two gentlemen are the ones behind the broken window theory. George Lee Kelling was an American criminologist, a professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University-Newark, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, and a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He previously taught at Northeastern University. James Quinn Wilson was an American conservative academic, political scientist, and an authority on public administration. Most of his career was spent as a professor at UCLA and Harvard University.

@ Yeah, we all want to go back to the city that was swarmed with criminals, drug dealers, murderers, rapists, when it was impossible to walk down the street safely in the evening, let alone ride the graffiti subway. Seriously, it was so awesome to get stabbed and robbed, etc. All I see now is well dressed, successful young and not-so-young people working well-established jobs, doing their thing, not to mention a much better and updated infrastructure (though it's still nowhere near the level of Tokyo). But no, seriously, Gay Pride and Basquiat gave the world so much happiness and prosperity that I can now truly attest we live in a much better world. We're all so happy and united. If it wasn't for Mapplethorpe, new wave disco freak shows, and porn theaters, we as a Western Civilization of New York City, would've collapsed.

If you want to dance in the gray area of Joe saying "someone" and not naming anyone, by all means, have at it. Seeing as how they were discussing if Bloomberg could be mayor again, id say reason lends to the idea that they think Bloomberg, if elected again, would be able to clean things up. I only wrongly assumed your of the more automatic right wing in that most of them think things went down after Rudy. Now honestly Rudy was an excellent mayor, he really cleaned up crime in this city and Bloomberg did as well. Deblasio is the one who plunged the city into a terrible place to live, hopefully he gets voted out and someone sane takes over. I’ve left nyc myself ATM lol currently in Pennsylvania till deblasio is removed.

I set-up services for businesses in NYC and shit is sad bro. All the calls of the business owners canceling because they cannot continue due to everything going on is truly disheartening.

NYC in 1981. We left Boston with a car and 4 wheels parked in Queens where my car was left on Budweiser cans with my rims lifted and stereo gone. THATS NEW YORK IN THE 1980S

Yeah - and before them it was the bohemians and artists who overran the cowboys and local yokels in the 1980s and 1990s. Circle of life.
