I love Colin, but this is him toeing the NFL's party line. I can't even blame him... contradicting Goodell's narrative, saying anything positive about Gruden , or defending him in any way could have major repercussions for his professional life. The manner in which Gruden was railroaded, the way it conveniently took the heat off of a billionaire owner whose alleged sexual harassment issues prompted the NFL to initiate a formal investigation in the first place, the length of time (full decade) they had to go back to dig up this dirt on a guy that had nothing to do with the purpose of the aforementioned investigation... it all just smells rotten. Gruden has a very strong case in a court of law----a fact not lost on Goodell, Dan Snyder, and the rest of the NFL's brass. No matter what one may personally think of Jon Gruden, or the distasteful joke he cracked in his private email correspondence ~10 years ago... bottom line is that Goodell/Snyder/whoever else did him dirty. Jon will win in court, because the facts are on his side. EDIT: And that is exactly why the NFL has been absolutely desperate to prevent the case from going to trial.

Good video-Gruden milked what he could out of his Superbowl win with the Bucs in 2003(even though that team was built by GM Rich McKay and former head coach Tony Dungy)--spent a decade or so in the booth, and by the time went back to coaching, the NFL had passed him by in more ways than one....

Bobby Knight was more of a winner over a longer period of time. When his center on the 1981 national championship team Landon Turner was crippled for life in a car accident right before the NBA draft Bobby Knight stepped up. He raised 500,000 to build a wheelchair accessible home so his former player could live with dignity. Knight put up 60,000 dollars of his own money towards that home. So many young men who played for Knight most of them black speak in glowing terms about how he helped them out at a key time in their lives. Your comparison has some merit but John Gruden stature wise is not even close to Bobby Knight. I remember Coach K at Duke once played point guard for Knight. During this time l could be wrong but l think that Coach K lost his father. Day after day for at least a month Knight was at Coach K's house and didn't stop coming until he felt that his player's family was okay. When have you heard about Jon Gruden doing things for other people.? Be careful Colin. Bobby Knight is a legend for so many reasons. Jon Gruden is no Bobby Knight, not even close. Fogot to mention in 1976 Knight's team went undefeated. In the first half of the 1990's he was still making the Final 4. In his last stop at Texas Tech he didn't win national championships but he totally turned that program around. In later years Texas Tech was in tha national championship game under a different coach but Knight definitely set the stage for all of this. Texaa Tech waa nothing before Knight arrived.

Gregory, I have been studying Bobby Knight for 30 years plus. All these things are correct however I do thing there are racial components to Knight, Coach K and Jon Gruden. As a black male, educated former athlete, I am familiar with guys like Mr. Gruden. Knight and Coach K has never had a black kid on their teams from urban America. There has never been a Jalen Rose type ever to play for Coach K or Knight. What I mean, there has never a black kid from public schools single parents to from these men. Jon Gruden has an issue with black men of power. The same with Bobby Knight and Coack K. These type of guys surround themselves with non threatening black men whom are lighter complexion like Grant Hill, Shane Battier. Dude, I know what I am talking about years ago as a teen I had an experience with Tim Floyd he stated some very interesting things to a group prospects. Dude, long story short there is hidden racial problems. Most black know when they are surround by people like Gruden, Knight, Coach K.

@@terrypross7638 Because people knew that Indiana was an origination point for the KKK, Lee Corso the football coach was having trouble recruiting black players at Indiana University. Guess who stepped up in the 1970's and helped Lee Corso recruit great black athletes, Bobby Knight. I could be wrong here but l believe one of the last times Indiana had a really good football team was during this time. By really good l think they went to a Rose Bowl. I could be wrong on this but Knight did help bring more great athletes into the program. Winston Morgan another black athlete lost his scholarship his final year at Indiana and played anyway His family found a way to keep him in school. Six months after he graduated he was told that Knight wanted to meet with him. So Morgan makes the trip to Indiana University. When he gets to Bobby Knight's office Knight explained to Morgan that he was sorry about everything his family had to go through that past year and handed Morgan a check for 30,000 dollars out of his own pocket. People who talk in terms of Knight being a racist do not know what they are talking about. By the way l believe there was a mention of Knight only wanting to deal with a certain type of black man. Knight dealt very successfully with Isaiah Thomas. They won a national championship together. Very few if any men who ever played basketball are tougher than Isaiah Thomas. Look at what Isaiah did in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons. By the way Isaiah has said many times that his mother was tougher on him than Knight was. Many of my family members grew up around and attended Indiana University. There are many who have their opinions of Bob Knight and rightfully so. Those who know him best know that the good outweighs the bad. Jon Gruden has not given of himself especially when it comes to helping black athletes the way coach Knight has. There's no comparison to be made. Gruden is no Bobby Knight and it's not close. Colin is good here. There's is some merit in what he is saying but there are also flaws in his analysis. Gruden will never be revered like Knight is never.

I’m afraid the NFL are currently worried far more about some of their HOF legends, cornerstone coaches, executives, owners, and big media personalities, being exposed in these 650,000 emails, and Jon Gruden, at the end of the day, will be the smallest fish in the NFL pond. I’m only using these names as an example when I say, just imagine if these emails expose big names like Jerry Jones or Jimmy Johnson, or Bill Belichek, or even media mega stars like a John Madden? If the NFL saw something that huge on its horizon, with names like that, it would dent the NFL brand something fierce. The NFL would spend billions burying that information. So when I say Gruden got what he deserved, I mean that sincerely. And his dismissal was warranted. But, I also think he was targeted, and I also believe whoever did target Gruden, had no ideas how it would open a can of worms that could lead to a monster unraveling of the NFL public image, it’s brand, it’s popularity, I think a lot of NFL people, especially in todays modern climate, are going to be destroyed. Some for good reason and some for guilt by association. Get your popcorn ready.

This is not in defense of his words or actions. Relating to football, in my opinion as a head coach Gruden hadn't evolved with the rest of the sport or the times. But in terms of a football offense, Gruden is right there with All those top guys. The Raiders offense is good and has been for awhile. Gruden's schemes, formations and motions are high level. His play calling and judgment in the moment may have been questionable at times. But its always easy for us to judge after the fact.

To a certain extent I agree. I grew up around Bobby knight. I watched every indiana basketball game for years and years. He was A GREAT coach for awhile but I do agree his arrogance and unwillingness to roll with the punches or change his tactics was his undoing at Indiana. But he was different with Texas Tech and took that program places it'd never been to up to that point so I'd say He was definitely successful there. Bobby was WAY WAY more victorius then John gruden could ever dream to be. Bobby should have literally had back to back undefeated teams two years in a row but one of their best players got injured in the final 8 I think it was so they lost to Kentucky by a point or two in the final four, then went undefeated the following year. He won 2 more after that and might have won another one in 91 I believe if Allan Henderson didn't get hurt. They lost to eventual champion Duke by 3 points in the final four. Bobby was WAY more successful then Gruden could ever dream to be but at the same time I understand what your getting at.

1997 Raiders 4-12..I’ve never missed a game in my life..it was the worst Raiders team and organization I had ever seen there was ZERO hope..1998 Raiders with Gruden..after 10 games 7-3 with a 3rd string QB Jeff George got hurt..1999 8-8 all 8 losses by 7 points or less..2000 12-4 First division title since 1990..I think we know who the problem was..when did it go sideways for Gruden in Oakland? He won another division title in 2001

That's the narrative that I know as well. I tracked the infamous Snowbowl from a safe house in Kabul. If that wasn't a stinger, our best coach in decades gets fired and then beats us the following season. I was very hopeful when he came back. It seemed like things were turning around again, even with the controversial personnel changes early on. The game may have passed Gruden by. However, it wasn't because he is some megalomaniac prima donna. Jon never rolled that way. This whole f$@king culture has passed many of us by. This shit show is bigger than this Gruden debacle.

Gruden was a scape goat to a bigger issue, no I’m not condoning anything Gruden said but I guarantee there’s a lot of “Gruden talk” from a lot of other people in the NFL

The comparison of Gruden to Knight has some merit, but it is also a bit over-simplified. Knight was much more of a public and non-pc bully. Gruden demonstrated his worst self somewhat privately via emails, private conversations, or communications that were not in the spotlight. Knight was proud and loud when it came to his ugliness, and for many years he had the entire state of Indiana behind him. I know, I lived there for many of his years while coach at IU. He was captivating and won big for many years. The reality is that when coaches are not winning or their churlish words/actions threaten to humiliate their team, the owners or principal investors find their spine and take action. In the end, it's all about money or the perception of compromised future earnings or power that spurs "courage" to deal with a renegade coach.

I remember when Indiana let Bobby Knight go. I heard he owned the State of Indiana, just like you said. Unfortunately, he went to Texas Tech, and did pretty good there. But no NCAA basketball championship. And, he didn't own the State of Texas, like he did in Indiana. Texas was just too big for that. Some people say that Greg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs, became the king of basketball in Texas?

Grudens personality must wear but dont buy the gruden wasn't winning he took the bucs to the playoffs at 9and 7 the year he was fired and the raiders are on the rise it seemed. He took the raiders to within a tuck rule of superbowl and brought in enough offense to take the bucs to glory against his old team. So he took two teams to superbowl.

Without Jon Gruden, there is no McVay. They’re running the same system. As I recall, McVay and Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDaniel, were in Washington together under Mike Shanahan and then Jay Gruden. There are no bright offensive minds in the “West Coast offense”. Gruden and Andy Reid are the same, the difference is that Reid drafts better. They both learned under Holmgren. Kyle and Sean are the same, they both learned under Mike Shanahan. Gruden has always been a good “West Coast Offense” soldier, just like all of the rest of the coaches that stem from Bill Walsh. Jon Gruden is no less of an offensive mind than the new generation.

Colin I'm a big fan of the Herd, and Speak for yourself when you were there. I noticed a certain things about you one that is you flip flop your position on players and issues. You acknowledge that stating as you get more information, a larger sample size etcetera at times leads to your change. This matter regarding Gruden is deeper than the contents of his private emails. It's opened the Pandora's box," No expectation of privacy" and "no expose facto". The thought that some Computer nerd can go into your private email and disseminate and it eventually goes public without your permission is BS. You didn't like Gruden as a Head Coach but you praised him as a sports caster, ironically that's when the majority of his emails where written. I think it's important to understand what year and time we're living in. You say know the temperature of the room, how the heck would Gruden know the temperature of the room 2021 in year 2011 so why is he being persecuted. If you can't see that smh

Colin is 100% right about Gruden being outdated & not mentioned among the great offensive coaches like McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Kingsbury etc.. I remember when Gruden had his QB camp show on ESPN he was doing a tape eval session with Teddy Bridgewater & I remember specifically they were breaking down a play where Bridgewater ran a RPO (Run Pass Option) play & Gruden said, "That's one of them RPO's isn't it, I can't stand RPO's man I hate that play". I always remember that comment of him sticking out because the RPO is literally a staple in offensive football in today's game, especially on the college level. Literally every offense with the exception of the Triple Option has RPO plays in their system & I always thought it was odd for an offensive minded coach like Gruden to be so against running a very effective play that everybody runs. Sean Payton, Shanahan, McVay, Kingsbury, Greg Roman & even his old Boss Andy Reid all run RPO's in their offense. I know this might be a random comment, but when Colin was talking about Jon being outdated it immediately made me think of that moment on the Gruden QB Camp when he was so mad about RPO's lol.

I don't see the similarities b/w Knight and Gruden . Bobby Knight had a hot ass temper directed at officials, his own players, and the opposing team. Knight would throw chairs onto the court frustrated with bad officiating or hit his own players and even get his hands around their necks softly choking them. Jon Gruden isn't like Bobby Knight. Jon wasn't thinking when he wrote those emails. He was most likely venting and never thought these would be released as part of an investigation into the WFT by the NFL. I agree, Grudens coaching is Bill Walsh style west coast offense of running the ball first and short passing second . Josh Jacobs is worn out and injured by Grudens overuse of him. Watch some Raider games. Gruden calls for a Jacobs run 3x in a row or on 4th and 1 when on national TV Jacobs is clearly hurt and hobbling around. What ends up happening is Josh gets hit for a loss and Gruden just shakes his head. Jon also doesn't trust Carr to the point where he can rely on passing game more than the running game.

So a Valid election is mass mailing ballots, states unlawfully changing voting rules, ballot harvesting, illegally banning poll watchers, Dominion machines foreign involvement not to mention the cabal of media and big tech establishment censorship that Time bragged about not fixing but “fortified” the election… and could go on but the most ridiculous is that Biden who was basically absent from campaigning so mainstream media did it for him yet he still got 81 million votes… 12 million more than Obama to become the most “popular” president in America’s history! It’s not hard to believe that half the country has serious issues with the 2020 election and the fact one side has zero interest and in most cases adamantly oppose any measures to investigate or secure future elections only leads to more doubt. This is what happens when ideology and tribal propaganda corrupts a societies ability to see other sides a valid people and just dehumanizes them as evil.

I felt like Jon Gruden was going to get the axe soon enough. I thought he would stick to TV. But as TV guy he saw it as means to be seen and those emails were his forum to fight back. In the end I never really felt Gruden ten years removed from the game was even going mount to much. A dude that clearly thought he was worth more than he was. He did win a Super Bowl but he knew the Raiders and the Bucs were stacked. After that things never were better after that.

Good point on the old school coaches. I just thought when I saw the Raiders give Gruden a 10 year contract & guaranteed money, is that real in the NFL for anyone but Belicheck and maybe a couple other coaches ? Who would give Gruden that contract after the way it ended in Tampa Bay, going to MNF to try to create a brand like Madden ? Gruden after that Super Bowl, guess it took 17 or so years for it to finally hit rock bottom.
