6 жыл бұрынI live in England so rain is the norm but I like the open air too, so I've built a Roof which covers my yard and at the flick of a toggle switch retracts back over the garage. I should have done this ages ago as its fantastic and with the addition of the rain sensor I can leave it open knowing if it rains it will shut itself.

I hope you had the roof checked for Harry Bestos before you removed the sheets Colin! To the best of my knowledge, corrugated cement roof sheets almost always have asbestos in them! Keep up the great work!

COLIN....is see 2 clear problems here. Firstly you should have used rubber/nylon washers on top of the Plexy panels to stop any water ingress . Secondly, and most definitely the more serious problem...you have actually made something useful!!!! xD Great work as usual.

Yah, that would have probably been a good idea. Though I don't think he's THAT concerned about water infiltration given that is an outdoor space. He just wants to be able to assemble things outside without getting rained on. Any water leaking through the plexi will be minuscule, and mold isn't really an issue since it's not a complex layered assembly that could trap moisture.

No need, the zinc plated fixings and the black steel will be a rusted mess in no time. You could see the bearings had started to rust before the thing was even fitted. Always use galvanised or stainless steel fixings outside (whichever is most suitable for the materials you're fixing). And use galvanised steel and lots of cold gal paint if you don't like the rusted look and the stains that go with it.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!! But he used naked bearings in weather. Turn down some Roller-Skate Wheels (the super tough ones) and taper them to fit your c-channel. makes easy long running wheels a snap. Would be a Single Axis...... plasma cutter, mig-welder ....

I do a lot of 3D printing, and Colin's reasoning on the bearings--and the alternatives of using a rail system--is literally a big part of the benefits to going with a linear rail system over standard rod and linear bearings.

Great project and nice upgrade of the whole roof! 👍 Want a tip? Make some mechanical (a bolt) stops besides the end switches, that way the switch don't break over time. Between switching in end position and the roof stopping, there is some time and mechanical load on the switches. By making a mechanical stop, you protect your switches. 😀

Mr. Furze, please consider the installation of a subterranean thermal heat exchanger. In England one must excavate probably ten feet plus or minus, but if anyone can do it, it is YOU. Besides, it will save you money when winter comes and if your summers are too long, it will cool your house. All you need to do is plug it into a heat exchanger and viola. THEN and only then consider solar.

Thank you so much, this is genius! Ive been thinking for a few yrs about building a trailer (2m inc. drawbar) to go behind my 4wd (Suzuki Sierra) but i want solar panels and a roof top tent (too short for a hard tent so need a soft one), this'll let me move solar panels out of the way for a soft shell tent and simultaneously put a roof over the kitchen. I cant believe i hadnt thought something as simple as this!

@@gabrielius55 Asbestos causes problems in industrial exposure after 40 years. Not a home owner demoing it a few times in their life, especially outside. This guy is exposing himself to all sorts of things most people would worry about. If you guys knew what people were exposed to daily 40 years ago you'd probably calm down a little bit.

A friend removed one asbestos shed roof back in the 80's. That was the only asbestos that he handled in his whole life. He died four years ago of asbestosis. I imagine and hope that the roof on the garage in this video was simply cement board.

@@vonasi2 I've never heard of a doctor diagnosing a case of pulmonary fibrosis as asbestosis based on one case of exposure. You can do all the research you want to on the subject. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fiberous mineral that is in fresh air. We're all being exposed to it daily. Kind of like radiation exposure. We all are exposed to radiation daily, and a few days of high exposure over a lifetime don't result in cancer. No one in the comment section is talking about him grinding his tungsten here, but everyone's talking about him sliding some roofing panels offs.

Yeah it looks like he cut the bolts with a grinder and was wearing SOME PPE later on. A lot of people don't take the danger of clinging spores etc seriously enough. I won't work on the stuff, not even in a big E.T. bodysuit.
