FINALLY ANOTHER UPDATE 💥🚐 I'm building the frame for just a regular twin mattress myself. I figured I could get all my electric under the bed and boxed off and still have room facing off the side of the bed. If you take ANYTHING out of this video, it should be that NOTHING is ever straightforward when you’re building it in a van! Excellent job dealing with all the idiosyncrasies and getting to where you needed to be in the end. Oh and I really like and appreciate your honesty when it comes to admitting mistakes/learning curves as you progress through design and implementation. I had 8020 cut mine. No waste, but cut charges . Worked out cheaper than full length and cutting myself. Nice design !

The concept and execution is pure genius, and any mistakes you may have made were because you were blazing new trails. The trials and errors of creating a prototype always come at a cost, but your ability to identify and rectify the problems yourself, more than made up for it.

I almost finished my van convertion and i actually went with the same kind of system, i just went with wood and a camping double size matres. Makes it a lot cheaper, but the aluminium will definitely hold up better over time. Great job man!

I am using an inflatable mattress with a Sealy 3" memory foam topper and it is the MOST comfortable bed I have ever slept in. You deflate a little to move it and then inflate to the firmness you want.

Great job Seven. Mistakes happen and that is how you learn. I have a Promaster 3500 extended and my bed is 40" off the floor so I can put my bikes inside. I need to be able to carry a tandem and 2 mtn bikes. I don't want my bikes outside for two reasons. One, no one can see I have bikes and two the bikes get incredibly dirty outside the van, especially in the winter. My vacations always involve bike riding and I don't plan to live full time in my van. My next goal is to build a bed system that I can convert from a full size bed for my girlfriend and I to two separate beds when I want to travel with one of my biking guy friends. I used a cot once but it was a pain.. Thanks for posting.

Excellent finished result! Cost may seem high but it's your bed. You sleep there 1/3 of your life. Spend the $$$ on the best bed you can afford.

Really like you bed design. The fact that you get back 25% of usable van area is impressive to say the lest. Something you might want to consider is how you will be able to change out the bulbs of the taillights in future. I saw a guy actually come up with a small door the taillight area. Where the door could be screwed away for changing.

I love your honesty and still think you did a magnificent job, however, I would never cut the matrass in 4, I have seen different ones, I would cut the bottom 1/3 off and flop that over, a variation on what Stokevanlife created. Anyway, so many possibilities, and it takes a lot of planning before I even start to plan out my van, let alone start to build it. I can't wait to see the rest of your videos. Thanks!

I am on my first build and I am doing it as I go that way I know what I need and want. I have redone a ton of things. Just don't throw away anything. If you haven't used your van, I suggest you do. Reality is different than your minds eye.

I am really excited about my costs. As I mentioned in the first video I have a similar idea for the bed frame but I want to make it out of wood with aluminum support sliders. I hope I will not make that much mistakes 😅 I just came to your channel. watched all videos and you are doing a really great job. I will definitely rethink my design idea as I planned also with a bike space but I will see if I will not replace it for a shower and water solution you made. One week ago I was on road with a rented Ford Transit for three weeks to have a first test about van life. So now I compared nearly all vans and really VW Crafter and Mercedes Sprinter just not fit for me at all. I will go with the Peugeot Boxer L3H2. They are more like a box so you win space on the higher level in the van and they are 187cm width inside so maybe I will not need a bed system as I am 179cm tall. Fingers crossed! keep that great work up I definitely subscribed and smashed the bell 😜

Excellent job. It opens up the space for so many possibilities aside from the shower. If i were to do a van build i would definitely copy your bed design.

Well done! My only suggestion: for your mattress covers. If you adjust in the future, have zippered covers ( encasing each of the 4 separate sections) this will make it much easier for cleaning, and washing.

Awesome job! I’ve been fascinated all the way! I’m curious as to a weight comparison as well. That is a very strong and versatile bed system that really maximizes your limited living area. I have to believe it’s also MUCH LIGHTER than a wood-build, for example. I saw (in the background) of another videoblogger that 80/20 has a giant catalogue (similar to Granger’s); were there other connectors/products that you found subsequent to your build that you’ve thought about/could be used to provide differing kinds of benefits? (You’ve opened a whole new world for me!) Have you checked out the Video for the 1-Hour Shower 🚿 that allows for limited water usage and recirculation/filtration?- Pretty cool! I thought it might fit part of your needs (the guy’s channel is called Boondocker).

Planning my second build and have decided to use 80x20 to frame out all of the cabinets, then simply cut panels to slip into the slots for the sides. I liked the folding bed on my first build and will do the same again. It allows a full length bed, plus a couch with additional floor space. Love aluminum's clean look, light weight, no-rust, and ease of machining. Already have the miter saw. Aluminum's only down side, as you mentioned is the price. Of course, costs can be greatly reduced by using extruded angles or tubing, but it's not as nicely finished as 80x20. So, it's a good alternative in unseen places. Either way, great tip regarding planning ahead to reduce wasted material.🤙 Noticed that you purchased your 80x20 from Amazon. But, I've also noticed some price gouging on some of their items, depending upon the vendor, so I'll be researching alternative sources. Perhaps some of your other viewers could recommend some cheaper suppliers. It would help a lot of people save a lot of money.😎

Love the collapsible bed frame I need this for my RV. I have a Murphy bed that is part of the slide out. So when I let the slide in I loose access to my closet and to the two cabinets above the bed so I need a different bed frame that will still allow me access.

In my 140wb sprinter I'm starting to build I was thinking of building a retractable bed for the same reason. But I was planning on mounting garage door rail going across then aiming up. With 8020 aluminum going across with garage door bearings on the end of each . This way it can roll from a bed to a somewhat couch very easily. I like your idea also. Took alot of thinking to come up with that.

I think you are supposed to add a thermal break between your aluminum bed frame and the frame of the van. The cold will conduct directly through the metal with direct contact.

I love this build :) Litle tip for the bike ;) you could put the bike flat ;) make a pull out drawer with a bike mount that flips the bike up when you have pulled it out. ;)

I think your sliding bed design can be further developed to become an outdoor patio ( I love to have one!) . Slide out to become a full size patio, collapsing and fold upwards stay outside of the back door or flat down to carry extra luggage/bike, etc.

I like the shower idea, though keeping water from getting outside the bottom may be a challenge.

With a similar amount of metal you could probably build your own version of the rock'n'roll seats I see in a lot of vans. It would also make your bed into a comfy seat. Your design is ingenious but I made my first bed from wood with the equivalent sliding system much cheaper.

Looks amazing, you should be very proud! Thanks for being honest about the costs too. The extra you paid you’ve gotta think of as ‘tuition’, you could have maybe avoided this mistake if you had a professional teaching you, but sometimes it’s better to make your own mistakes and learn from them (and probably not much difference in price either!) Just wondering if you are putting up any kind of vapour barrier over the insulation? Also intrigued on how you are going to do the wall panelling! Anyway, we’ll done and look forward to seeing your next video. Scott

You added the small 45° pieces/ramps so that the saggy sliding 8020 pieces would slide up onto the fixed portion. Instead, you could just cut the ends of the sliding 8020 pieces at 45° angles which should do the same thing. I like your ideas and craftsmanship much. I would say however, 8020 seems too expensive for the bed. If you had used wood, like many KZfaqrs have, perhaps you wouldn't have needed need the plywood in the mattress/bed cushions. Perhaps, then you could have used 2 mattress cushions instead of 4. If you had not extended your upper cabinets all the way to the back, you could have done the bed that converts into the reclining sofa that you were elaboration on. Excellent idea, bed that converts into a sofa.

You are a remarkable young man Steven! My grandson has a degree in engineering and I 'd love to see him go stuff like this, but he doesn't have anything close to your ability to communicate the process of your project. Did you study engineering design in college?

I am building my own travel trailer and I did a ton of costly mistakes, I never built anything before and a design maybe perfect on paper but not so perfect when you manufacture it; also, solving a problem somewhere may ultimately cause problems elsewhere. But at the end, the satisfaction of achieving something is a great source of proudness, it can not be evaluated in terms of money.

My guess is that you are a software developer. I am also building my van and plan to travel, work and live out of mine. I work remotely on every project I work on. Server administration, front-end, backed and automation related stuff here. Getting into mobile app development full time soon and shifting away from anything website related as much as I can. I am really enjoying your van build.

This 80/20 is one of the best designs for a collapse-able bed and regaining a shower area footprint. It's too bad that you can't store your bike inside with this low bed design anymore. I am wondering if you could gain some more seating/table capacity with the bed collapsed hence making the steep investment in the 80/20 design even more reasonable.

I like the aluminum look and lightness. However I think it can be done in wood or a combination of wood/aluminum for way less.. and still keep it looking good and light while you are at it. Just my 2 cents... ✌️

Why not set up an outside shower? Pretty easy to do and you will have more room...:). I love the design of the bed though, excellent work.
