This is one of those movies I never get tired of watching. It gets better with every viewing. Michael Mann is such a badass filmmaker, and Cruise and Foxx are at the top of their game here. I love how in the end Vincent loses because he sticks to routine while Max improvises and wins. Brings their convos full circle. Vincent fires his gun the same way the whole movie. 2 in the chest, 1 in the head. He does this twice on the train firing 6 shots where he expects Max to be. = Routine. Max steps out into the open, closes his eyes and just fires wildly. = Imrpovising
@PhantomFilmAustralia
@PhantomFilmAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
The irony is that max followed routine for 12 years. The person who taught him to improvise, _"Darwin, I Ching, Roll with it"_ was Vincent. It saved his life with the meeting with Felix, and it saved his life in the shootout.

Tom Cruise has played villains or villainous characters in this (Collateral), Tropic Thunder, Taps, and Interview with the Vampire. Though... in all of those movies due to his natural charisma audiences may find themselves liking the characters that he plays in spite of their misdeeds. He has played severely flawed protagonists, anti-heroes, characters with demons and skeletons in their closets, or general assholes who sometimes find redemption but sometimes do not in American Made, Rain Man, Risky Business, Jack Reacher, Valkyrie, Vanilla Sky, Rock of Ages, The Outsiders, The Last Samurai, Born on the Fourth of July, and Magnolia. And of course he is a cocky brat in Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Cocktail, A Few Good Men, The Firm, and probably half of everything else he's ever been in. But this film is probably his most prominent villainous role and the one where he is most clearly supposed to be the bad guy. If you want to see just one more, though, I would check out Tropic Thunder... he's amazing in that even though it's a small role. If you want to check out two... then watch Interview with the Vampire, too.
@LordLOC
@LordLOC 2 жыл бұрын
He isn't a villain in Tropic Thunder, he's just a manipulative studio head (supposedly based on several real studio heads, but who knows who really lol) who comes across as being a douche more than anything. But god damn he's hilarious in the movie, so people just love the character.

The director wanted Tom Cruise for Vincent, but the character was described as someone "people wouldn't notice or that would just blend in with a crowd." Based on that description one of the studio heads thought that Tom wouldn't be able to pull that off as Tom is "too recognizable." So, in order to prove that Tom could pull it off, the director had Tom dress up and work for a day as UPS delivery man. He went around town making deliveries and someone was filming the day with a hidden camera. Tom delivered packages all day, had a lunch in a dinner having conversation with another man in the diner and no one recognized him the entire day. After being shown the footage of the day, the studio signed off on Tom playing Vincent.

I remember when this was released, there was this big outcry about Cruise playing a villain - and with salt & pepper hair, no less! (Really?...), but it was also the beginning of about a 10-year span in which Jamie Foxx put on a string of simply kick-ass performances. Collatteral, Ray, Jarhead, Miami Vice, The Kingdom, and Django Unchained, and I think there's one or two more thrown in there, where he just kills it on screen. He really shines in those films. He's still just as busy, but you don't hear much about him anymore, for some reason.

Brilliant film. Note how Vincent chastises Max for being such a creature of habit and never doing anything spontaneous. Meanwhile, Vincent is a creature of habit himself, the cops even talk about the other cab driver who went on a rampage but a detective always thought there was another person. VIncect used the same tactics and it gets him killed. Look at the door between the train cars, there are two bullet holes where Max's chest should be and one at head level. Vincent took the same shot he does throughout the film, what shooters call the Mozambique drill, two to the body and one to the head. the shoot hit the door and not Max. Meanwhile, Max does something spontaneous for the first time in his life and shoots randomly through the door, and a lucky shot hits Vincent.

Ur absolutely correct in ur assessment. Vincent had done this before with another cab driver. He intended to kill Max at the end of the night just like the other cabbie. Vincent was playing Max to keep him under control. U see him do the same thing at the jazz club with the owner. He manipulated his emotional attachment to jazz and Miles Davis to keep him there for the right moment. Thats why the scene with the coyote is so important. Like Vincent, the animal must kill to survive but one day he must, in turn, be killed. I think Vincent saw himself in that creature.
