Collecting Acorns for Seed - How to grow white oak trees

In this video we'll be exploring the acorns of oak trees as I document my own attempts to collect, inspect, test and plant acorns. I'll be looking specifically at white oak tree species, including the bur oak. We'll be going through when to collect your seed and what to look for, testing for seed viability, and how to sew your seeds.
I'm by no means a tree expert and would love to hear any thoughts/opinions/criticism of this content and the way in which I'm currently trying to gather seed and grow trees. My hope is that together we can build a resource that empowers others to grow their own trees.

I LOVE TREES! I am PASSIONATE about them actually! I live in a city in a rental right now but will be moving in March am preparing to add multiple trees which I have grown from seed. Thank you for such a clear picture for choosing the right acorns.

I live in Southwest Conn. Zone 6-7. From what I understand white oak, sprouts a root in the fall. But you are not supposed to let it freeze before the rest of the acorn grows. So I am putting them in a container outside, and hope to cover and prevent it from freezing. I also have some that I am growing in doors under a grow lamp, I already have shoots with leaves coming up after three weeks. I'll gradually put them out in the spring - if they survive. Another alternative is to overwinter them in the refridgerator which I am also doing. We'll see what happens. The trickey thing is they sprout their roots in the fall. I also understand they have really long tap roots, so I have 12" pots. On some of the acorns I am getting many shoots which is weird. I was also told that white oak acorns are only fruitful once every five years, so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

Great subject. Last fall I filled a mason jar with white acorns intending to use them for a project. I forgot about them for a few weeks and about half of them ended up sprouting in the jar just from the moist environment. I planted one in a 2.5 qt pot and it grew fairly quickly at first (pace of a pepper plant) but then slowed down when it got to around 10cm tall. I transplanted it into a 5 gallon fabric pot, and sure enough, the taproot had begun to spiral at the bottom of my little pot. It has been in its large pot for three months now but is only 13cm tall. I found a study online that showed this as normal for young oaks. I actually just looked at him after watching your video and noticed that he has a little side branch growing near the base. As I understand, oaks have to senesce to survive so I'm planning on transplanting him somewhere safe this spring -- just haven't found a spot yet!

Keep us posted :D Wish you have randomly buried the others outside. Half likely would have survived. Once they can bury that tap deep enough the chances are good.

@@alphaomega8373 I actually did plant about 6 others outside but I haven't seen anything yet. Either the soil was too clayey or they got eaten or they haven't sprouted yet because of the winter.

Oak trees are very rare in Malta as they are confined to damp valleys which protect them from the hot dry mediterranean summers. I spotted one on the sister island of Gozo so will revisit to hopefully get some seeds too. You have very impessive oak tree specimens over there. Good luck and as always thanks for sharing mate 😁

I picked up over 100 acorns that are starting to sprout. I tried planting them outside, but the squirrels dig them up. So I tossed them in my back yard and they will grow where the squirrel planted it!

They sprout but are very difficult to grow on. I think the best solution is to plant them in situ with protection. They spend the first winter putting down deep roots. Good luck.

I have white oak acorns dropping like mad, but I'm in zone 6a. Should I save the acorns for next season or is it possible to overwinter them without moving them in the garage during freezes?

White oak acorns need to go through a 'cold stratification' process - plant them in the fall, they will sprout up in the spring. They need to go through the cold

Just came across this. In my area I’ve been scouting white oak trees for 5 years and they haven’t produced any acorns until this year. All of the white oak I’ve been pinning on my map are producing. It’s been 5 years in the making and I’m going to get as many as I can since the long gap in between production.

White oak acorns sprout right away and put down deep roots. Red oaks need cold and sprout in the spring.

Can I plant green acorn that did not turn brown?? They are from a white oak.

Having the same thing here, my tree is way too big to get up there and pluck acorns but all the acorns on the ground are green, there is an absolute ton but again all green. Kinda disappointed but maybe the browns just haven't started falling

You can freeze seeds of any kind and theyll last for 50+ years
