Welcome to the first episode of Collecting At Midnight, a longer, podcast/vidcast format discussion about physical media collecting. This is the place where you can learn more about Cereal At Midnight, your host (me, Heath Holland), and dive deep into topics that other videos on the channel can't. There will be impressions (done poorly), cats interrupting, and maybe even the occasional surprise or two. Collecting At Midnight is geared toward the hobby (obsession) of collecting from a personal and honest perspective.

Hey Heath, Checking out some of your older videos, love the long format. Goes great with morning coffee. Gonna go hit some local thrift stores today and see what treasures I can find. See you later.

Thanks! It turns out those longer format videos kind wiped me out for content. Smaller, bite sizes chunks (that sounds gross) ended up being the best for me and for the viewers.

Enjoying physical media (movies and music) versus streaming/downloading movies and music is akin to people who still love to buy books instead of reading books on their iPads, Kindles, etc. There's a need to satisfy a tactile sense and to physically hold these items in one's hands. Plus, when you own physical media, no network or streaming service can take them away from you. :)

Came by your channel by accident, liked what I saw and subscribed. Like the fact that its a channel more then just about what I bought, although I don't have a problem with "What I bought" videos now and again.

I appreciate longer videos if they are full of passion! You definitely remind me of Aaron Pynn. In the movie collecting community here we refer to Aaron as the professor lol. I’m glad you picked up 36th chamber of Shaolin. As a massive fan of kung fu and shaw bros that’s one of the best films from that era. Keep up the great and cool vids coming!

Hey, man! Thanks! Yeah, I love the Shaw Brothers too. I actually did a write-up for another Shaw Bros movie, "Oily Maniac," recently over at F This Movie. That movie was crazy, but fun and totally gave me an Incredible Hulk vibe. I'm looking forward to revisiting 36th Chamber. It's been a long time.

Yes indeed! I don't know your region, but I saw The Hustler on Blu-ray at Big Lots earlier this week for either three dollars or five dollars, can't remember which. They're also running a "buy one get one half off" media sale, if you have one nearby.

I had a few Music DVDs a few years ago. I'm a Blu Ray snob now but have given thought into getting music DVDs. The VHS titles I still out own are all music. On VHS I still have The Kinks ; One For The Road as well as Motorhead : Live In Toronto, Girlschool : Play Dirty Live., Scorpions : Works Wide Live. When DVD came around I got Pink Floyd's The Wall. Judas Priest : Live Vengeance, The Who LivevIn Texas 1975, The Clash movie Rude Boy. On Blu Ray, I have some music such as The Grateful Dead Movie, The Rolling Stones : Ladies And Gentlemen (Which I saw with my older brother at a movie theater I would end up working at from 1986-90, I thought Ladies And Gentlemen was going to be a Documentary like Gimme Shelter and it ended up a concert film, it was filmed in Houston in 1973 which worked for.me since I haven't liked them as much without Mick Taylor) , Led Zeppelin : The Song Remains The Same, Woodstock and from my Criterion Collection I have Monterey Pop and Gimme Shelter. I'm not a big James Taylor fan (even if we"re both Massachusetts guys) but a friend of mine, who's a musician, played keyboards on a couple of tracks back in 2002 or 03. He wasn't a fan either but he said thatbTaylor was a nice guy.

This was great! I enjoyed it. I like the message the Laisser-faire attitude. For blade runner there was a dvd set that came our years ago that has all the versions on it. I bought it second hand at like a used cd/movie store. I was just happy to get the Euro version on it as that’s the first version I saw (via the library on vhs back in the day) anyway I’m rambling good show I’ll watch vol. 2 tomorrow

Hey, thanks for watching! These longer format videos don't get many views, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I always wanted that Blade Runner "briefcase" set that came out, but I could never justify the price for it, and I know good and well I would never watch more than one or two of the cuts.

Regarding Blade Runner. A couple of years ago I found the briefcase set you mentioned at a thrift store but it was for the HD-DVD version. All of the HD discs were rotting (very hazy). Apparently, a common issue with the format depending on where it was pressed. All the trinkets and such were intact so that part was cool but HD buyer beware.

Hey Heath! Whats up buddy? First of all, thanks for the mention! As an answer to your question, no, there are no 'Big lots' (I'm not sure if I spelled it right) at least in Argentina and other bordering countryes where I have been in. Here there aren't many big chains that actually are involved or selling some kind of phisicall media. The only international chains that used to have some were walmart and carrefour, but they actually don't have anymore. As I told you before, the only place to buy CDs (Which is my main interest) or DVDs is at specialized stores, bookstores or old music/guitar stores, because there aren't many thrift stores or yard sales in my area. On the other hand, here we have a national chain called Yenny that is the place to go when you want to buy cds or books for retail; They even have a website for online purchase. One of their stores (actually the biggest one) is called the 'Ateneo Grand Splendid' and its located in Buenos Aires, our Capital City ; if you happen to have a minute, I strongly encourage you to google some photos of it. Its a really beautifull place and its considered a site of big cultural interest, Its also on lots of "best bookstores of the world" countdowns. I'm sure you will love that place! Lots of books, Cds, Dvds, Blurrays. Its also a theater, and on the afternoons you can listen to live music (mostly jazz or tango) while you read a book or drink a cup of coffe. One of the best places I have ever been into, that's for sure! I also have to say that I really appreciate this longer/laid back and more relaxed style videos, I really feel like I'm talking with a buddy!! Its amazing the commitment and effort you put into your videos, please keep doing them!! Excuse for this long and never ending comment. But as you said, is good to share and know how is to collect in other countries. Finally, I will leave you with a music recommendation. I really wanted to recommend you some music from my country, but I wasn't sure wich artist/band you might like. But as I watched your Greta Van Fleet video (btw those guys ROCK!), I get to know that you really like Led Zeppelin. So my reccomendation is an early 70s Argentinian blues-rock and hard-rock Band Called 'Pescado Rabioso'. His Leader was Luis Alberto Spinetta; a fantastic singer, guitarist, musician, composer and writer (A national legend if you ask me) a very respected artist here on my country. The band's discography is short but very strong with Only 3 discs ('Desatormentandonos', 'Pescado vol 2' and 'Artaud); wich overall are great! But I strongly reccomend you their second effort 'Pescado vol 2'; a double disc with lots of good lyrics (real poetry), killer riffs and some highly psychedelic and trippy stuff. And If you want to have a sneak peak at some of their songs I wold reccomend you some of my favourites! wich are: "Como el viento voy a ver" which is in fact very bluesy and simmilar in style to 'Since i've been loving you' by Led Zeppelin. Some more blues-rock examples may be "Despiertate nena" and "Post crucifixion"(killer riff on that last one). Well I guess thats all for today!! Chau, hope you are doing well and greetings from Argentina!!

OCTAVIO! What's up! Thanks for telling me about Pescado Rabioso! That sounds fantastic, and like something I will really enjoy. I listened to "Como el viento voy a ver" and I really like it a lot. It's definitely got that Led Zeppelin hard rock vibe, and I dig the organ, which gives it a Deep Purple or Santana feeling, too. Nice one! I'm going to have to see if I can get my hands on their albums. Also, I looked up pictures of El Ateneo Grand Splendid and it looks AMAZING. It looks like it was named the "second most beautiful book shop in the entire world" and I can see why! Be well!

Cereal At Midnight Hi Heath! Whats up? Been a while since this comment but lately I have been listening to another argentinian musician I think you might Like. His name is Pappo. I really think you will like some of his early albums with his band called 'Pappo's blues'. So that will be another reccomendation, if you happen to have a minute I encourage you to search some of his music here on youtube or in spotify as well. On the other hand, I was wondering If you could gey your hands on some Pescado Rabioso albums or If you have been listening to them lately? Putting that aside, I really enjoyed your new videos!! Cheers from Argentina

Idk how parents couldn't let their kids watch Scooby Doo. I grew up with the Scooby Doo meets Batman DVD and still have it. I'm currently 22 so I also obviously grew up watching the 2 live action Scooby Doo movies. Also I'm a big fan of the Seattle mucic scene and a fan of Pearl Jam. I know that Eddie Vedder is a massive fan of The Who. The Who was probably his biggest reason for wanting to pick up guitar and become a musician. And on the Xbox one there is a bunch of old star wars games like the first two battlefronts and other ones. I think Knights of the old republic 2 might be on there too.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 4 жыл бұрын
Parents would stop their kids from watching Scooby-Doo in the 80s because of the Satanic Panic. It was real and it was VERY influential. There was an all-out moral war on everything from D&D, heavy metal, MTV, Star Wars, and anything that remotely seemed supernatural. The conservative movement made serious waves, and affected a lot of kids. And yes, the Xbox was the best system for Star Wars in the early 2000s. Both Battlefronts, both KOTORs, Clone Wars, and an exclusive Obi-Wan game, too.

I enjoyed Hitch, and Kubo is a good movie. I just couldn't get into it when my buddy lent it to me on DVD last year (probably around the time you made this video come to think of it). Probably because my buddy is so in love with that movie and was practically bugging me to watch it, instead of letting me watch it on my own without having too much expectations going into it.

How did you come to begin collecting DVD's? I began collecting in 1991 when my baby was born with medical complications and had to be kept at home and inside the house after multiple surgeries. Had to keep myself occupied in between caring for him. When he got older I had to keep us occupied and watching movies with him worked for us. I mean, you can play Candyland only so many times, lol. Cable tv was not an option for our family. My child is now grown and has an extensive collection of movies as do I. What started as way to keep from going stir crazy has turned into a passion for quality movies.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 5 жыл бұрын
It started with buying favorite movies on VHS. Specifically, Batman, Home Alone, and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I watched those movies over and over and over, and then just kept adding movies to my collection because I enjoyed having access to movies on my own terms. It just grew bigger and bigger, especially as movies continue to get cheaper. I’m probably going to do a “why I collect movies” video soon, because it’s something people have been asking about and I’ve been thinking about lately.
